ITALIAN superstar Alessan-dro Del Piero capitalised ona couple of howlers fromNewcastle defender ZenonCaravella last night to leadSydney FC to a 2-0 home winover the Jets in the openingA-League game of the season.

Del Piero, with 14 goals inhis first A-League campaignlast season, scored one andmade one for Joel Chianeseat Allianz Stadium, butCaravella was in both.

After 36 minutes, Del Pieroappeared to lose possessionto Connor Chapman in thepenalty area only to be giftedit back when midfielderCaravella ran into Chapman.

The veteran striker slidthe ball across goalkeeperMark Birighitti into the net.

Caravella, who signed aone-year contract extensionearlier this week and is thenephew of Sydney coachFrank Farina, was also culp-able for the second goal.

He was dispossessed by DelPiero, who fed the ball toChianese who lashed a pow-erful shot into the net.

Sydney created far morechances against a Newcastleside lacking penetration withstrikers Emile Heskey, Mi-chael Bridges and Joey Gibbsall on the injury list.

The Jets had a couple of de-cent chances after Chianese’sgoal, but rarely exposed Syd-ney’s new-look rearguard.

The Jets showed some nicetouches but didn’t create anygood first half chances.
