Del Piero grabs ‘gifts’ Joel Chianese is swamped by jubilant Sydney FC teammates after scoring the second goal against the Newcastle Jets in last night’s A-League clash at Allianz Stadium, which kicked off the 2013/14 season Picture: CAMERON SPENCER ITALIAN superstar Alessan- dro Del Piero capitalised on a couple of howlers from Newcastle defender Zenon Caravella last night to lead Sydney FC to a 2-0 home win over the Jets in the opening A-League game of the season. Del Piero, with 14 goals in his first A-League campaign last season, scored one and made one for Joel Chianese at Allianz Stadium, but Caravella was in both. After 36 minutes, Del Piero appeared to lose possession to Connor Chapman in the penalty area only to be gifted it back when midfielder Caravella ran into Chapman. The veteran striker slid the ball across goalkeeper Mark Birighitti into the net. Caravella, who signed a one-year contract extension earlier this week and is the nephew of Sydney coach Frank Farina, was also culp- able for the second goal. He was dispossessed by Del Piero, who fed the ball to Chianese who lashed a pow- erful shot into the net. Sydney created far more chances against a Newcastle side lacking penetration with strikers Emile Heskey, Mi- chael Bridges and Joey Gibbs all on the injury list. The Jets had a couple of de- cent chances after Chianese’s goal, but rarely exposed Syd- ney’s new-look rearguard. The Jets showed some nice touches but didn’t create any good first half chances. Heart captain Kewell ad- mits he took time to hit top form with the Victory in the 2011-12 season, though he played more strongly late in that campaign, before quitt- ing the club. The 35-year-old has played just three club games since, for Qatar club Al Gharafa. But as he prepares to wear a captain’s armband for the first time, in the derby clash with the Victory at Etihad Stadium tonight, Kewell is confident he’s ready after a three-month pre-season. ‘West is best’ WESTERN Sydney coach Tony Popovic says much- improved depth thanks to a lengthy pre-season has added a fearless streak to his squad as they get set for their second A-League campaign. Despite a fairytale debut season, the Wanderers start- ed very slowly with no pre- season to speak of and didn’t score their first goal until Round four. Popovic said fans can ex- pect a more threatening start as they prepare to face Cen- tral Coast away today, in part- icular from fully-fit Japanese star Shinji Ono. The marquee player’s flair became the heart of the Wanderers mid- field last season with eight goals and three assists.
