They came, they saw, they loved it! About 600
people attended our Open Day on Saturday 19
March to see the new Clinical Services Building
at Blacktown Hospital.
Our community loved the fresh, spacious new
wards, the carer zones and the welcoming
feeling, commenting that it “doesn’t feel like a
hospital at all”.
Thank you to all our wonderful staff and
volunteers who did the meet and greet,
directed people around the hospital, wrangled
balloons, handed out free water and apples,
worked the tour route and were generally
fabulous!
We couldn’t have done it without you!
Visitor comment: “Nice, airy, bright, wide, roomy”

Respiratory ward; CE Danny and project officer Matthew take it all in from

unfortunate duty of escorting a gentlemen out of the building for wardrobe
crimes. He was allowed to return to the event after removing the offensive
Hawaiian shirt but counselling has been recommended for his recidivism after
he was spotted in the garish item again later in the day. If you see him, please
approach with caution (or cautionary fashion advice).
Visitor comment: “Needed in the local
area for employment and services.”

SPREADING OUR WINGS: We’re used to construction cranes so it was delightful to have a different kind of crane visit us on
Saturday. Origami master Yoshimi Lawler made paper peace cranes and lotuses with visitors and volunteers on Open Day. The
paper sculptures will form part of a new artwork for our hospital.
MADE IN BLACKTOWN: One of the highlights of Open Day was welcoming our community representatives back to Blacktown
to see the work they created. More than 500 people contributed to the design of the mosaic seat that has become such a
feature of hospital street. Back row: mosaic artist Malcolm Cooke; community rep Adid Alrubi; Hikmat Odesh from SydWest
Multicultural Health Services; a community representative; HARC coordinator Marily Cintra. Front row from left: Zubaida Alrubi,
Barbara Kenny from WASH House Mount Druitt; Gathering Place artist Robyn Caughlan; a community rep; Ahlam Odesh; and
Geodhini Sivaraj, Family Support Coordinator SydWest Multicultural Services.

OPERATION ART: Bringing life to the hospital and the hospital to life, our artists are
an integral part of what makes all our new facilities so special. From top left: Call of
Home artist Leanne Tobin; Sydney Sonata Singers performing; Salamak bringing

IT IS YOUR DESTINY (TO GO FOR FUN): It wouldn’t have been the same without a
visit from our friends at the 501st Legion Southern Cross Garrison. Above, a
Stormtrooper gets day leave from the Death Star to Go For Fun.
Right, could our clinical services building architects Vanessa and Chin be getting
some tips for Death Star supremo Lord Vader? Good thing they ignored Darth’s
advice that black is new black (except for Hospital Street). Our architects Jacobs
(formers SKM-S2F) have just been shortlisted for a Dulux Australia colour award
for the new building.
Right, Sharon gives directions to
Kamino. Or should that be Tatooine?
Or Jakku? Depends which generation
you are! Thank you to our local
Empire contacts Admiral Clive and
General Sandra, and their Bad Guys
Doing Good team Brenden, Darrell
and Matthew.
