Too often, we find ourselves dedicating an exorbitant amount of time chasing and, in some cases, fulfilling our dreams. However, the dreams we aspire to are not always our final destination. Sometimes, they’re merely another stop on this journey we call life.Oral Roberts University Assistant Coach Sean Sutton knows this all too well. He saw it firsthand as his father, legendary coach Eddie Sutton, left the University of Kentucky in the midst of a recruiting scandal. He experienced it himself following his resignation as Oklahoma State University’s head basketball coach in April of 2008.Sean Sutton lived and breathed OSU basketball. He followed his father there from Kentucky as a player. He later served

at osu as an assistant from 1993-2006 until he took the reins from his father to serve as head coach. his resignation came after compiling a two-year record of 39 wins and 29 losses.sutton’s struggles continued two years later after he was arrested for possession of prescription pain medication. and, just like that, it appeared sutton had hit rock bottom, and he had. however, instead of giving up, sutton picked himself up, dusted himself off and began chasing the dream he was born to fulfill: to be the best husband and father he could possibly be.sutton’s best decision in life was enrolling at osu. not because he would be playing basketball in one of the most historic venues in college athletics, gallagher iba arena. it was because that’s where he met his wife, trena. at that time she was trena winters, a young college co-ed from guymon, oklahoma today, sutton’s panhandle princess is his rock, his foundation, the love of his life. the couple was long considered royalty in stillwater. their lives under a microscope, not unlike that of prince william and his bride, kate middleton, sean and trena were heir apparent to the throne that is osu basketball.today, their fairytale ending is a work in progress but, trust me, it’s a fairytale nonetheless. neatly tucked away in their south tulsa residence, the sutton family is alive and strong. their oldest son, hunter 19, is a student at smu in Dallas. they also

have two sons at home, spencer 14 and parker 9. so, how does a family continue to thrive after facing such adversity? considering the circumstances, most families would struggle to remain intact. the thing is, this isn’t most families. most families don’t have a father and husband who possesses the willpower to overcome and battle addiction. most families don’t have three sons with the resilience of hunter, spencer and parker. and, most importantly, most families don’t have a mother or wife like trena, the key ingredient to the recipe for happiness.“i don’t think i’d be here today without the love and support of my wife,” sutton said. “she continued to believe in me when

i didn’t believe in myself. i struggled with depression and i struggled with confidence, but she continued to be solid as a rock.”while the circumstances were unfortunate, trena is quick to point out that there was still a lot of good that came out of the situation they faced. “when things fall apart, you start to realize what’s really important,” trena said. “i think at some point we both lost focus and, because of the situation, we both were able to address that.”you see, this family isn’t broken. in fact, it’s quite the contrary. this family embodies the american dream. whether it’s hunter calling home from college to talk to mom or dad, or spencer trying to explain to his mom the importance of an online dynasty for the ncaa Football video game, or mom and dad checking in with parker to make sure his homework is finished, this family is as normal as the cleavers. and, just like any other family, when a pizza is ordered for dinner, dad is the one who goes to pick it up.of course, while family support was huge for sutton throughout these trying times, the support of those who followed his playing and coaching careers was also instrumental.“it’s not just the osu fans,” sutton said. “it’s all oklahomans. ou fans, osu fans, just oklahomans in general. they all continued to support me and my family throughout the process. i’m so thankful for that.” trena echoes his sentiment.

“people would recognize him and come up and say ‘hey, i’m praying for you,’ and you start to realize that a lot of these people have been through something similar or know someone who has,“ trena said.one thing sutton found to be of extraordinary assistance as he continued on the road to recovery was to be part of a team again. “it’s great to be back on the sideline with my brother and being part of a team again,” sutton said. “i found myself very lost without basketball. i had been part of a team for more than 30 years of my life, so it was good to feel that again at oru.”

bragBOOK Magazine.com 5 9

Page 60: Brag Book Spring 2012

while sutton is happy to be part of a team again, he makes it very clear that his family comes first. “at times in my life i would get so wrapped up in basketball,” sutton said. “now, i realize that coaching basketball is simply what i do. it’s not who i am as a person. i love basketball but, ultimately, i won’t be judged by how many basketball games i win or how many i lose. i’ll be judged by who i am as a person.”as a result, sean is adamant about making a difference in the lives of those who face similar challenges. “i made a promise to myself that i would commit to making a difference in this state,” sutton said. “i felt it was important to educate people about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.”he has kept the promise he made to himself by speaking to dozens of groups about his experience and how he continues to overcome adversity on his road to recovery.again, sutton’s primary focus is with his family, and the move to tulsa has paid huge dividends in that regard. sometimes a little change is a good thing. “our main focus when we left stillwater and moved to tulsa was, of course, sean’s recovery, our kids and our marriage,” trena said. “sean’s time away from coaching was a blessing because it allowed us to refocus on what’s important and fall in love all over again.”while the fairytale is far from over, the ending will most definitely be a happy one.

When things fall apart, you start to

realize what’s really important...

Page 64: Brag Book Spring 2012

kellie clements lives a bold, colorful life right here in oklahoma. the talented interior designer and owner of modern whimsy interiors is currently juggling family life with newfound stardom on home & garden television (hgtv). happily married with two boys, kellie is eager to start the next vibrant chapter of her life with confidence and cutting edge designs. kellie grew up in a family of ar tists, which made choosing interior design as a profession an easy decision. she recalls rearranging her childhood bedroom as one of her favorite pastimes. During the summer, she went to work with her dad at his art gallery and often went to a nearby store to rearrange window displays. “i feel like the shop owner fed my creativity by allowing me that freedom,” she says. “i wish more people would consider how the small things they do – or don’t do – can make such a big impact on the lives of others, especially young people.” her creativity and keen eye for design carried on through her college years where she couldn’t wait to get her degree. kellie has been happily married for almost 11 years to husband, rich. she met rich when she was working as a gymnastics instructor and competitive cheerleading coach, and her now niece and nephew were in one of her classes. the couple has two boys schafer, 6, and cruise, 2.

“schaefer has a fiery spirit and his own ideas of how things should be in addition to being artistic and strong-willed, much like his mother,” kellie admits with a smile. “cruise is a tough little guy with a tender heart.” schaefer also loves to paint like his mom. when kellie finds a

minute to paint, she lets schaefer put the first strokes on the canvas. “sometimes i encourage my boys to break the rules in terms of being creative,” kellie says. “i want them to explore as many ways to get from point a to b as possible.” the family lives on a “fixer-upper”, as kellie calls it, on 2.5 acres in edmond. she and her family enjoy the amount of freedom the state offers. after spending time in new york with hgtv, she admits she views the state differently: full of opportunity. “above all things i appreciate the environment that my children have to nurture their spirit,” she says. “we are connected with some wonderful friends and families that share our vision for missions and helping others, which is a rare commodity in some parts of the country.”

it was the most intenseexperienCe of my life...

the clements family has faced two big challenges over the years. in 2009, kellie had an all-terrain vehicle accident. the incident left her with the inability to walk for a period of time, which meant rich ran his own business while caring for the boys who were ages 4 and six weeks.the second biggest challenge came 17 months after the accident when kellie expressed her interest to audition for hgtv’s Design star. the program, now in its seventh season, gives interior designers the chance to compete for their own design show on hgtv. she looked at Design star as a new challenge and an opportunity to be a positive example on a larger stage. because

of her successful design career in oklahoma, kellie called the experience not something she needed, but something she wanted. rich encouraged kellie to try out for the show and even drove her to auditions in Dallas. when she was selected as a finalist for the show, rich stayed in oklahoma tending to his business and the boys for almost eight weeks while kellie was filming Design star. kellie describes the experience with one word: intense. “it was the most intense experience of my life... right up there with childbirth,” kellie jokes. “but i am totally serious about the intensity. i had no idea what to expect – much like how naive a new mother is.”the hardest part about Design star was being away from her family. cruise was only 16 months old when kellie left for the show. “i missed some important milestones,” kellie admits. “the first time i heard him say ‘mamma’ was via skype. that was a

wonderful and heart-wrenching moment all at the same time.” kellie walked away from the competition in fourth place and with a new sense of confidence in her design philosophy. “i knew i had a special gift for meeting the needs of my clients,” kellie says. “but being able to compete in that arena was very reassuring.” Design star viewers agreed that kellie has a special gift and voted her as the season’s Fan Favorite, which she says was extremely humbling.“i was overwhelmed with the effort people – most of whom i will never meet – invested on my behalf,” she gushes. “i went [on Design star] to win the whole competition, but what on earth could be more of an honor than the viewers deciding who their ‘favorite’ was?”the next step for kellie is to start working on her online design series to stream on hgtv.com. the series was filmed in oklahoma and will begin airing in late march. the series will focus on the basic knowledge of design so viewers can equip

themselves with an excellent foundation for design. “completing my online show and the fact that we filmed right here in oklahoma is so exciting,” kellie says. “i feel privileged i was able to bring the attention of hgtv to oklahoma.”the clements family also has several projects in the works including a collaboration project between kellie and rich to introduce a new type of construction to oklahoma. kellie is excited to bring a cutting edge, sophisticated construction design to the state as she and her husband are in tune with the flourishing trends on both coasts. “we’re not afraid to be bold in our ideas and the efforts it will take to help oklahoma become a trendsetter in the design world,” she says. in addition to looking into construction developments, kellie is excited about partnering with her design assistant, rebecca souza, to launch a new furniture line. the line features vintage pieces with kellie’s trademark use of bold colors and unique mix of fun patterns. you can find out more about kellie’s furniture line at www.modernwhimsyinteriors.com.“i dream up these ideas of the perfect piece of furniture and have invested hours searching for it only to find – it only exists in my head,” kellie says. “i am committed to designing furniture that i love and would put in my own home.”with her bustling, colorful life getting only busier, kellie admits juggling her professional life with her home life can be difficult. she found that she doesn’t have to say “yes” to everything because it is impossible. “saying ‘yes’ to one thing means saying ‘no’ to something else,” she says. “i try to make sure i am committed to the things that will matter long term.”it is obvious to see the “thing” that matters most to kellie is her husband and sons. to sum up her family, she says no matter what the highs or lows are – we play as a team.“the most important on-lookers of this chapter in my life are my children and my husband,” kellie says. “i always want to make sure our boys don’t have to look outside our home to find a good example.”

Tips for preparing children for The arrival of a new sibling

by John Gifford

bringing home a new baby is one of the joys of life, but it can cause anxiety for some. This is

particularly true for children, who are often unsure about the changes a new sibling brings to

the family dynamic. and for small children accustomed to receiving most of Mom and dad’s

attention, the arrival of a younger brother or sister can be confusing, frustrating and even scary.

so what are parents to do?

Page 117: Brag Book Spring 2012

“relax,” says Dr. savannah stumph, a pediatrician at mercy

clinic edmond signal ridge. “my best advice is to relax and enjoy every minute with your first child before the new baby arrives. your family dynamic is about to change (in a good way, of course!) and it’s important to soak up those special last days with just you and your little one.” then one day it happens: your baby is born. and after months of anticipation and preparation, your attention naturally shifts from your older child to your new baby and meeting his or her needs. even though this is an exciting and happy time for your family, it can also be stressful for young children who lack the maturity to make sense of such changes, and the communication skills to let you know how they feel. “an older sibling may not react to the new baby by simply acting out,” Dr. stumph says. “they may also demonstrate regression, which can include wanting to act more like a baby – wanting to drink from a bottle, wetting their pants or trying to swipe that pacifier that they haven’t needed in a very long time.” many parents expect some difficulty in introducing a new family member, but they often underestimate the impact this sort of change can have on children. Fortunately, there are several ways to help prepare a child for the birth of a new brother or sister. Dr. stumph says parents and their children can spend time together looking through baby photos; they can visit friends who have an infant; and they can discuss possible names for the baby. parents can even enroll children in a “new siblings” class that mercy and some other hospitals offer. these classes are designed to he lp ch i l d ren understand the role of a big brother or sister. “once the baby comes home, you can also allow your older child to help care for the baby, within reason, of course,” Dr. stumph says. “but also realize that it’s okay if they don’t show an interest right away. this may take time.” Dr. stumph adds that older children still need that precious one-on-one time with mom and Dad. “it’s important that children realize there is a special time when they will have their parents’ undivided attention,” she says. “this can help reduce

the feeling of resentment or anger that your child may develop.

here are some other tips to help prepare your child for a new brother or sister:

o The duration of a pregnancy (nine months) is a long time and small children may have difficulty understanding when the new baby will arrive. one way to explain thebaby’s due date is to tie it to a season.

o Take cues from your children and answer the questions they ask, but don’t provide unnecessary details.

o in the hospital, it is often suggested that dad hold the baby while Mom sees her older child. it may be easier for the child to visit when there are fewer visitors so he or she can have more of Mom and dad’s attention.

o Talk to your pediatrician if your child has difficultyadjusting to your new baby.

whether you’re a new mother or considering becoming a mother, Dr. stumph says one of the best things you can do is select a pediatrician early on. “utilize your pediatrician to answer your questions in advance and help sort through all of the information and advice you are bound to receive.”
