returned from their adventure toTanzania. The girls kept a diary inorder to share the experience...
A TYPICAL DAY“Today, we went to the BabyOrphanage with a few other
housemates. We had to get the DalaDala, which is a rickety mini bus thatcan hold about 12 people in, but trueAfrican style, they managed to fit inabout 25-30 people.
“As we went into the BabyOrphanage, the younger childrencame running up to us and we thenplayed with them for a couple ofhours. When it came to lunch time,

The group thatwould win would then hold up theplatter and all point and shout“Shame! Shame!” to the other group.They would then get cleaned up andbe put down for a nap.

break. We would all have around fiveto six kids trying to hold our hand,they loved to hang off of us, and acouple of kids would even strokeyour hand and then sniff their ownhand to smell your scent.
“When it was home time, it startedto rain. While the teachers from theschool started to walk some kidshome, we went back to the babyorphanage to have some lunch. This was about one o’clock.
“When the children woke up, we played with them till 4pm andcaught the Dala Dala back home.”
Before this trip, Paige and Georgiadid not realise what would be involved.They were sent to a very remotevillage with very primitive facilitieswhere white women were stared atand are sometimes subject to abuse.This, alone, was most intimidating forthe girls. The children embraced thegirls and, from the pictures, enjoyedtheir interaction with teaching, danceand games. A particular poignantaspect of this trip was that many ofthe children have incurable diseasesyet still had a smile on their faces.
When Paige used her iPod to playmodern day music, the childrencould not have been more excitedand laughed and danced! They areprivileged to have been part of thisadventure and Austin Rees are intotal admiration to what Paige andGeorgia have achieved. This is anexperience they will never forget. Ihave run out of steam as far as buying a foreign property is concerned. The buying of land in Africa failed because The Boyfriend broke his foot at aninopportune moment – although when is it ever opportune to break your foot?
– rendering the transaction impossible. It was actually quite a relief as thepaperwork for the purchase was barely legitimate and we’d have been flying bythe seat of our – ragged in his case, due to the collision – pants, had it goneahead. More worryingly, the President of said country has recently bulldozed lotsof ‘illegitimate’ properties to the ground, a procedure that I actually witnessedwhile there. It was actually not dissimilar to what happens in this country, apartfrom ‘they’ – they being the politicians – dress it up so much that you can barelyrecognise it as bull-dozering... In Africa, I called it ‘naked’ politics, which is a fairlyaccurate description.
I was on the point of buying ahouse in Spain a couple of yearsago, until I realised that I wouldthen be obliged to go there all thetime, when there is so much moreof the world that I haven’t seenyet. I will almost certainly expirebefore the possibilities of theworld do, so why commit myself?
I then turned my attention tothe fact that I haven’t actually gotthat much money, now that I’ve stopped investing in property and that my ownabode could do with some TLC, especially as it’s mainly my house that createsmy income. This has been outlined by the fact that recently, my millionaireneighbours all have scaffolding up while my house gently leaks.
I called my lovely builder, who is now only mainly concerned with ‘big’projects, but quite rightly keeps his old customers on the back-burner for whenthe big projects run out. He might be able to fit me in some time before my frontwall caves in and the neighbours start to complain that my house is leaking allover their new paintwork. My other projects are as follows:• Replace the electric shower in the downstairs bathroom. A task I can do myself
with great adeptness, however would sooner eat my own liver than executeand have therefore procrastinated about for the past six months.
• Replace the weeping window sills in my bedrooms. Well, they used to weep buthave now graduated to sobbing uncontrollably.
• Re-plaster the laundry room after extreme leak. Regarding this task, part ofme has to say ‘who cares?’ Only The Big Son (who’s actually blind as far asinteriors are concerned) and I ever see it.
• Fix stained glass in front door with something other than parcel tape.
C lifton Terrace, PowisVillas and WesternTerrace are all perhaps
candidates for the accoladeof best road in Brighton. But,all things considered, I thinkthat Montpelier Villas in theMontpelier & Clifton HillConservation Area is mostdeserved of the top spot –and a house is now for saleon this fine street.
Montpelier Villas featuresjust 20 houses, which equates to five pairs ofnear-identical Grade II Listed semi-detachedresidences on each side of the street. Save for afew self-contained basement flats, they are allwhole houses. Fortunately, as the front doors areon the sides, hallways separate the front and rearrooms, which makes conversion particularlytricky. Submerged basements and splitstaircases also help in that respect.
No. 13, on the west side of the road, has justcome onto the market after nearly 50years with the same family. Bearingin mind that at least four houses onthe street have changed hands for£1.6 million and over since 2005, thecurrent asking price of £1.35 millionseems incredibly reasonable.
Like all of the houses on the street,No. 13 features two principal storeys,a deep basement with high ceilings,and rooms in the roof. The road wasbuilt from 1845 to the designs of prolific local architect Amon Henry Wilds, whowas also responsible for Montpelier Crescent, Hanover Crescent, Park Crescentand the Victoria Fountain. I particularly like the lead canopies above the front bowwindows (there are also side and rear bow windows) where glass inserts allowlight to flood into the rooms behind.
Much of the charm of Montpelier Villas can be attributed to its maintenanceas a carefully thought-out composition. An Article 4 Directive, which dates from1977, specifies non-negotiable paint colours for both exterior wall surfaces andwindows (white) and ironwork (black). An earlier photograph that I foundshows one property with black windows and white walls alongside anotherwith white windows and grey walls. Uniformity here is key.
The whole street is said to have been built on a bluebell wood. Whilst I didn’tsee any bluebells in the surprisingly spacious rear garden of No. 13, a numberof my other favourite plants, including euphorbia and climbing roses, werepresent in abundance.

uncertain about what was happening with theirtenancies and their money.
At the Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) they havereceived many calls from tenants concerned aboutthe deposits they have paid and whether they willbe able to get their money back. The averagedeposit in England and Wales is £979, so tenantshave every right to be concerned,and cases such as this recent oneshow how important it is fortenants to be sure that theirdeposit is safely protected.
It is the law for landlords toprotect tenancy deposits with anapproved scheme such as TDS.The schemes allow for deposits to
be retrieved by the tenant if the agent or landlordgoes out of business or loses the money, andthere is also a free, impartial dispute resolutionservice which can be used if tenants believe thatdeductions from their deposit are unfair.
