Background  � Development  of  Pinterest  began  in  December  2009,  and  the  site  launched  in  March  2010,  used  to  be  on  an  invitaHon  only  basis,  but  no  more.

Pinterest  Co-­‐Founders  Ben  Silbermann  and  Evan  Sharp:  

“We  wanted  to  create  a  place  where  you  can  go  to  upload  or  collect  things  on  the  web  and  simply  organize  it  the  way  you  want  to.”

What  is  it?  � Pinterest  is  a  “virtual  pinboard”  that  lets  people  share  anything  and  any  topic  on  the  web  that  they  find  interesHng  and  beauHful  –  e.g.,  pictures,  quotes,  recipes,  etc.    

� Conceptually  similar  to  social  bookmarking  sites.  � Content  is  organized  in  “Boards”  and  organized  in  categories.    

� Each  piece  of  content  is  called  a  “Pin”

What  is  it?  � People  can  “like”  your  pins  and  they  can  “repin”  them  on  their  boards,  comment  on  them  and  share  on  Facebook  and  TwiVer.  

� You  can  follow  people  and  they  can  follow  you.    And  they  can  just  follow  one  of  your  boards  if  they  choose.

Pinterest  is  one  of  the  largest  social  media  networks  on  the  web.  The  network  saw  +4377%  growth  between  May  2011  and  May  2012.
