In northern Romania, lies the county of Maramures. Here, amidst mountains, hills and depressions are one of the most interesting tourism objects in the country, yet very well kept. Here, people lead their lives as authentically and peacefully as in the old times.

Maramures is one the best kept Europe's secrets, the place where the time hasn't moved for decades, and a place where the traditions, the wooden art and the human kindness are well preserved.

The Wooden Church "Sf Nicoara" in Budesti Susani was painted around 1760 by the original artist, probably from Moldavia (Alexander Ponehalschi). The church hosts many icons painted on glass, made in painting centers in Transylvania.

The church’s structure is rectangular with a unit roof on the entire building, which has two rows of eaves, the pronaos was been extended toward the west during the nineteenth century (which makes the building longer than many others), the tower isn’t found at the western end, but towards the center of the building.

The painting of the church was originally applied to textile pieces, covered with a layer of prepared lime. Unlike this technique, the paintings of the nineteenth century were applied on the layer of lime which was put directly on the logs of wood, and the scenes are not arranged in a specific sequence. The original inscriptions are in Slavonic and the new ones are in Romanian with Cyrillic alphabet.

Biserica de lemn din Bude ti șSusani (cuprinsă în noua listă a monumentelor istorice) are hramul „Sfântul Nicolae”.

A fost construită în 1628, după cum rezultă dintr-o inscrip ie în slavonă aflată pe țu ile împărăte ti. În col ul ș ș țde nord-est al naosului există însă o altă inscrip ie care țspune:,,Din mila lui Dumnezeu i din darul șSfântului Duh s-au milostivit Dumnezeu de s-au făcut i s-șau îndemnat din îndemnul lui Popa Iona de s-au zugrăvit șbiserica de zugravul Alexandru Ponehalschi i s-șau zidit această Sfântă biserică spre lauda lui Dumnezeu i spre isprăvirea șsufletelor cre tine ti. Anul ș ș1760 noiembrie în 10 zile ’’.

Pictura bisericii este frescă pe lemn şi cuprinde mai multe scene biblice şi scene din viaţa lui Isus Hristos. Pictura se presupune că ar fi fost făcută în anul 1760 de către pictorul Alexandru Ponehalschi.
