Mata Atlantica -I a World Biosphere Reserve

The Atlantic Forest ( Mata Atlntica) is a terrestrial biome and region which extends along the Atlantic coast of Brazil from Rio Grande do Norte state in the north to Rio Grande do Sul state in the south, and inland as far as Paraguay and the Misiones Province of Argentina. The biome, which represents 13% of the country's surface, is considered "a key point of biodiversity" - a global conservation priority - because it is both diverse and highly threatened. For example, it has been proven that the Atlantic Forest "primary forests" consist of more than 476 species of trees per hectare (approximately 2.5 acres). This represents the highest level of tree species ever recorded on earth. Today the remnants of native vegetation are down to about 22% of its original cover and are in different stages of regeneration. Only about 7% are well conserved in over 100 hectares fragments. Even small and too fragmented, it is estimated that in the Atlantic Forest there are about 20,000 plant species (about 35% of existing species in Brazil), including several endemic and endangered species. This wealth is larger than some continents (17,000 species in North America and 12,500 in Europe) and therefore the Atlantic Forest region is a high priority for the conservation of global biodiversity. Regarding the fauna, the surveys already carried out indicate that the Atlantic Forest is home to 849 species of birds, 370 species of amphibians, 200 species of reptiles, 270 mammals and 350 species of fish.

Besides being one of the richest regions of the world in biodiversity, it is vitally important to roughly 120 million people who live in its area, where are generated approximately 70% of Brazil's GDP, providing very important ecosystem services It is a global hotspot, and the most threatened area on the planet It was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and National Heritage by the Federal Constitution of 1988. The original composition of the Atlantic forest is a mosaic of vegetation set as dense rainforests, open and mixed; deciduous and semi-deciduous dry forests; high-altitude grassland, swamps and marshes.

SOS Mata Atlntica Foundation First established in 1986, this non-governmental organization is active in the conservation of the countrys most threatened forests and associated coastal and marine environments. The Foundation seeks to ensure sustainable development and quality of life for human beings. Its cause is to protect and restore the Atlantic Forest as only a small part of this important forest that once covered much of Brazil remain and protect the sea and coast of Brazil
