1d indicates that the flight is one minute from the system calculated Top of Descent

Descent Advisory –

DE indicates that the flight should begin descent to

• achieve its calculated efficient descent and

• maintain the integrity of the sequence

Speed advisory –

SAS646 receives its STAR from ATCSAS646 arrives on Sweden Control frequency near MIKNA and receive confirmation of its STAR [TRS2N] from ATC.

The STAR is entered in the FMS by the crew, which computes atrajectory (non-time constrained), which is refined with a wind uplink.

A new trajectory is then available for flight optimisation and possible downlink

The aircrew may be asked by ATC to ‘Report ready for descent’

STARTrajectory available

ATC starts Controlled Time of Arrival [CTA] processUsing a datalink, the AMAN manager requests an RTA Window fromSAS646 for the CTA point.

The CTA point selected for this demonstration is SA614• Close to TEB, approximately 35nm from touchdown and has an

altitude constraint of FL100

Time WindowRequest

Page 10: NorthernCross Demo 2009

SAS646 responds with RTA ‘Time Window’The aircrew responds to ATC with an RTA ‘Time Window’

This time information contains• Estimate Time Arrival [ETA] – unconstrained time at CTA point• Earliest possible time and• Latest possible time

This time information is displayed in the AMAN landing list

RTA Time Window

ETA, Earliest, Latest times

Page 11: NorthernCross Demo 2009

Integrated Air Traffic Management Demonstration

ATC issues a CTA to the flightThe AMAN manager positions the flight, as close to the ETA within the‘time window’, considering • The aircraft’s time preference / time capabilities, and • Any other flights

[If the time window was not suitable SAS646 would remain under AMAN-P control / advisories for delay management and a CTA would not be sent]

CTA

Page 12: NorthernCross Demo 2009

Integrated Air Traffic Management Demonstration

SAS646 responds againThe aircrew reviews the time received and agrees to fly to the CTA

SAS646 communicates this acceptance to ATC via datalink

This results in a HMI change at the AMAN position• Time window display collapsed to show the agreed time, with a

smaller time window around it [ +/- 30 seconds]

CTA

CTA agreed

Page 13: NorthernCross Demo 2009

Integrated Air Traffic Management Demonstration

SAS646 uses Required Time of Arrival [RTA]The aircrew enters the CTA as a required Time of Arrival [RTA] in their onboard functionality

This triggers a new trajectory which can be• Sent to the ground upon a request or• Automatically sent to the ground

New trajectory

Page 14: NorthernCross Demo 2009

ATCO HMI changesTo denote the new ‘state’ of the RTA flight, ATCO HMI changes

include• The flight is flagged differently on the AMAN-P HMI• The flight is flagged differently on the ATCO HMI

In addition, a vertical window is provided for the ATCO, showing the vertical details of the downlinked trajectory

Page 15: NorthernCross Demo 2009

Integrated Air Traffic Management Demonstration

SAS646 flies to its CTASAS646 continues to fly to its agreed time for SA614 and ATC attempts to stay ‘hands-off’ for the flight

If it hasn’t received a descent clearance beforehand, the crew willalso report when it is approaching its Top of Descent [ToD] point.

Page 16: NorthernCross Demo 2009

Integrated Air Traffic Management Demonstration

SAS646 flies to its CTAIf, at any stage, either . . • the crew of SAS646 does not wish to [or cannot] continue on RTA

or• ATC cannot allow the flight to continue self-managing to its time. . . .then the CTA can be cancelled

In that event the flight is brought back under the AMAN-P process
