Kérovia®
asPHalt coNcrete witH a KeroseNe resistaNt cHaracter
Taking into account the nature of their binder, the usual asphalt concretes do not resist well to the
contact with hydrocarbon and petroleum products. There were successful studies in order to improve
the performance of bitumen regarding these aggressive agents.
kérovia® is an asphalt concrete based on a modified binder with the most common gradings 0/10 or
0/14 mm elaborated by Eurovia for surfacings subject to accidental spillage of petroleum products.
kérovia® is laid to a thickness of between 40 and 90 mm.
Key beNefits
Good resistance to hydrocarbons
Excellent rutting resistance
a solution adapted to each jobsite
Production possible with the Tempera® processes
Key fiGures
Thicknesses from 40 to 90 mm
More than 10 yearsof expérience
Dozensof references in France
The fuel resistance has been appreciated for years by the Duriez test after immersion into diesel or kerosene. With the implementation of the European standards, a new test subject to standard NF EN 12697-43 allows to quantify differently this performance.
In summary, this standard is divided into two phases:
- phase A, a density loss, after steeping in the fuel of the upper 35 mm, of test specimen (the selected fuel - diesel or kerosene - risks of coming into contact with the asphalt concrete according to the project),
- phase B, a second density loss after washing with water, mechanical drying and brushing of the immerged surface.
These two phases simulate first of all the initial loss due to accidental spillage of fuel on the road, then afterwards degrading over time through traffic stress. This decomposition in two test phases seems to be more realistic of the phenomenon on the road compared with the immersions carried out before.
a New refereNce
There is not great experience on the new test, but it is already undeniable that the performance with the binder used, when steeping or brushing, could be different, as the comparative tests carried out by the company’s research center show:
These tests showed among other things an influence of the aggregates’ origin composing the asphalt concrete. That is why Eurovia will select the adequate bitumen within its range of modified cross-linked bitumen according to the selected aggregates and the final destination of the project to be carried out.
In any case the Kérovia® binder is a modified bitumen with a microstructure that optimizes the asphalt concrete performance regarding the hydrocarbon spillages.

The kerosene resistant character of Kérovia® makes it quality surfacing especially for surfaces subject to risks of accidental spills of petroleum products: airport areas with traffic and aircraft parking spaces, industrial parking and heavy vehicles, military equipment fields, bus floors, etc.In case of intensive and continuous chemical stress, it is advisable to use a surface course in cement concrete, in paving stone or to plan surface protection application.Eurovia offers in its range of special products other solutions that also have good hydrocarbon resistance.
a well directedstudy
The nature of the aggregates and special requirements of the client can sometimes lead Eurovia to incorporate additives in the Kérovia® formula in order to make it more resistant to every surfacing stress.
Furthermore Kérovia® offers excellent resistance to rutting, of a level superior to those required under the standard regarding asphalt concrete on airfields (EN 13108-1).
