The Project: Exploring Technology 2011

Every year around this time, the Digital Media students at Hyper Island gear up for the Exploring Technology module.

Exploring Technology introduces the students to digital technology and the principles of digital development. The module is playful and has a strong focus on exploration and creativity within a team environment.

The overall aim is to explore technology in a tangible way, with tasks based around sensors, microcontrollers and coding.

For the module, the class was divided into eight groups and asked to devise a project under the theme ‘Word Hard, Play Hard,’ while simultaneously pushed to ‘explore technology’ in uncharted directions.

On October 27th, we hold an exhibition in central Stockholm where each group exhibits their finalized project. Guests are encouraged to meander through and interact with each of the projects.

During the module the class is divided into groups and within the overall theme ‘Word Hard, Play Hard’ each group has to make a project ‘exploring technology’.

The module ends with a huge exhibition in central Stockholm on the 27th of October where each group will display their projects and have the guests interact with it.

The Product: Insense

Under the name ‘Insense’ (stressing INdoors and SENSE), our fundamental goal was to connect people to their indoor environment in a different and beneficial way.

While some environmental conditions of the home are easily sensed, like temperature, light and sound levels, others are not so apparent: the amount of oxygen, carbon dioxide, humidity and impurities. All of these factors contribute to the health and well being of the home dweller. If left unchecked, the consequences can be harmful.

Our project aims to visualize the measurable changes and levels of interior environments. Using hardware to measure the aforementioned conditions, and software to process it, our project displays this information, such that it can be visually rendered into something aesthetic and useful. This output is shown on an interactive lamp, a screen, and website

The Team: ‘The Locals’

We are seven enthusiastic Digital Media Students working on the project. We all have different backgrounds both in terms of nationalities and experience.

During our idea generation process we quickly found that we all had a common interest in doing a project that had something to do with environmental changes. ‘Insense’ is a concept we have developed together and something we all feel strongly for. Measuring and visualizing data that is a constant in our daily lives is a project we both believe in and have fun doing.

SPONSORSHIPSIn order to build our solution, we need several devices. Part of the exploring technology module is to find sponsors who are willing to fund this.

Hyper Island as a brand has a strong value within the digital media and creative world and this brand value you will be able to benefit from as a sponsor.

Helping us with funding the ‘Insense’ project, we can offer following:

- To get your logo displayed on the front-page of our project website- To be mentioned on our official blog – either as a company or one of your products- To have your logo shown at the end of our video productions- To be featured on our sponsorship wall in print at the actual exhibition- The be featured in the project description and all other material produced about the project

All project materials will be spread to Europe, USA and Asia within the digital and technological industries via SNS.

For larger sponsorships there is a chance to have your product displayed at the actual exhibition. Please get back to us for further planning if this has any interest.

We thank you in advance for any interest you may show our project. /The Locals
