Welcome to the first issue of At Your Side – our dedicated newsletter for our education customers.

We’ve put a lot of thought into how we can make this as helpful as possible - as well as finding out about our latest products, we’ll be showcasing how schools and colleges are using Brother printers to bring classroom activities to life, streamline office processes or transform letters home to parents. You’ll also be able to find out which events we’re attending, or wider initiatives we’re supporting.

We’d love to know what you think – let us know what you’d like to read about – you can contact any of the team using the details opposite.”

Q&ATell us a bit about what you do.I’m the head of the North Eastern Universities Purchasing Consortium (NEUPC for short), which provides a centralised purchasing structure for our 24 members. We help to create frameworks across 11 specific commodity groups such as catering, computing, telecoms and travel. My role is to set the strategy for the consortium and steer it to areas of growth, as well as continuing to keep the organisation fresh.

What are the key challenges for procurement officers, particularly when it comes to IT?Keeping up with the rapid changes in technology is a huge task. Not only do we need to understand the latest technical advances, but equally we have to balance this with the needs and requirements of our members and make sure our framework is flexible enough to allow the best solutions to be found, selected and procured.

Price is also a major challenge – as our frameworks aren’t mandatory, we need to

be able to offer the most competitive price to our members.

What can technology suppliers do to help?Communication is key – be transparent about roadmaps and upcoming technology that may be beneficial to our members. Specific support for IT managers in our member organisations throughout the duration of a contract would be a crucial factor in a successful partnership.

Equally, resellers too need to show the same level of clarity, to ensure education organisations get the clearest picture possible.

Finally, what does the future hold? Our frameworks are designed to support long-term agreements, so it’s important to make sure our contracts are correctly futureproofed – this means making it flexible enough to incorporate any changes with regards to technical improvements or convergence in the marketplace.

In each issue, we interview an influential, inspirational or just plain interesting character from the education sector. In our first Q&A we speak to Simon Toplass, head of consortium at NEUPC.

We’ve been thinking how we can help make returning to school after the long summer break that little bit easier.

Our Back To School handheld labeller, the PT-1005F, allows you to print out smart-looking labels immediately either on fabric or scuffproof tape. It’s perfect for organising classroom equipment as well as making sure that you can keep track of children’s belongings.

The labeller is available for £34.49 inc VAT and will be launched with a fantastic opportunity to win a family holiday to Disneyworld Florida by playing an exciting online game. Go to www.brother.eu/florida to find out more.

DESIGNER LABELS: Get organised with our Back To School labeller

There’s a whole host of documents that need printing daily in education – whether it’s reports for PTA meetings, student assignments or project sheets for the classroom. The latest additions to our best selling mono printers (the 5300 and 8000 ranges) will help ensure documents are crisp and clean, everytime.

The 5300 printers in particular have already received some fantastic accolades: check out the reviews at Trusted Reviews (www.trustedreviews.co.uk). They offer a sleek, compact design and can produce great-looking essays, class handouts and presentations.

If you’re after a machine that can not only print, but also copy, scan and fax, the 8000 all-in-one models could be a great option for bulk copying documents, scanning project work or creating displays.

These models are not only efficient but they’re safe too. All are Pira-approved to prevent cheque fraud and include Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption technology to ensure that confidential details can’t be intercepted when your documents are sent to print.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, these printers offer double-sided (duplex) printing functions as standard, reducing paper consumption by 50% and up to 75% if booklet printing, and are Energy Star and Blue Angel accredited for having the minimum possible environmental impact. Saving the planet and saving money at the same time – what could be better?

SRP start from £179 for the HL-5300 range and from £375 for the 8000 range. For more information, visit www.brother.co.uk

We’re getting out and about to spread the word on our latest and greatest productsIt’s important that we’re all up to speed with the very latest happenings in education, so back in May we travelled to the e-Learning Foundation’s

‘Preparing for Home Access’ exhibition to share knowledge and advice with the education technology community.

The one day conference in Leeds was held in order to support schools as they get to grips with the government’s new £300m scheme to get computers and internet access into one million homes. We showcased our DCP-375CW all-in-one printer (launched July), which, with its speedy scan, copy and print capabilities, is ideal either for use in the classroom or for students at home.

For more information on the e-Learning Foundation and the Home Access Scheme, visit www.e-learningfoundation.com.

Next on the agenda is COUP, the Conference On University Purchasing. Due to take place at the Royal Holloway University in Egham, Surrey on 8th and 9th September, we’ll be sharing learnings on purchasing technology with procurement officers and managers representing universities from all across the country.

For more information on COUP, visit www.coup.ac.uk.

How To... Duplex

Duplex may not be a word you’re familiar with when it comes to printing, but if we told you it simply meant double-sided printing, then you’ll understand why it’s a big deal in today’s paper-conscious organisations.

While most organisations are keen to cut their paper use, many simply aren’t aware of duplex or how to set up printers in the correct way. Take a look at our top tips and make sure your machines are ready for some duplex action…

First of all, check that your printer actually can print double-sided pages. Your printer manufacturer will be able to confirm – Brother’s duplex-enabled machines have a ‘D’ at the end of their serial number. If your machine’s good to go, then it’s time to get set up.

And that’s it – an interesting follow up experiment is to benchmark your current paper usage, and see how much consumption reduces once you’ve set up double-sided printing as standard – it could even form the basis of a lesson on reducing your school’s environmental impact.

An even more useful duplex function is to set up PCs and laptops to always print double-sided as standard – this will mean that users don’t have to remember to always select the right printing format – it will just become the norm across your organisation:

Making the grade

We’ve been working with James Rennie School, a

specialist communication and interaction college in

Cumbria, to help it get the most out of its printers

both in the classroom and for information for parents.

The majority of the students at James Rennie have

severe or pronounced learning difficulties, making

clear communication and celebrating achievements

an important part of school life.

The school trialled the DCP-6690CW printer, the

world’s first compact all-in-one A3 colour inkjet

machine, and it’s made a world of difference since it

was installed back in November.

“In the past, the cost of many A3 colour printers has

put us off, but we’ve found the Brother machine

affordable and easy to use,” said Kris Williams, deputy

head and head of ICT at the school.

“A lot of our students can’t work on smaller pieces of

paper, and now we can take their work on A3 paper

and scan it directly into the system. Staff have also

been using the printer to scan pages from books,

blow them up and print them out on A3 paper, making

them much easier for the children to read.”

“We’ve used the printer in more traditional ways, too,”

Kris continued. “The A3 photo prints are superb and

our A3 photo displays have been a huge success.

“Perhaps the most useful application, though, has

been the production of large format report cards for

students that they can take home and share with their

parents.”

Kris is keen to recommend the DCP-6690CW printer

to other organisations. “Although it’s very neat and

compact, our new Brother machine offers a whole

host of features that both the staff and students

have found really useful. We believe it’s a worthwhile

investment for any school looking to make an impact.”

James Rennie School uses our A3 colour printer to showcase its

students’ achievements.
