    Moose Legionnaires,

Here we are at the midway point, and we have some work to do in achieving our membership goals. I believe however, we can overcome these membership challenges and achieve our goals. This quarter’s membership sponsor’s award is a Southern Cali-fornia Moose Legion 6 lapel pin. The Moose Legion, along with the Loyal Order and the Women of the Moose, are also partici-pating in the current nationwide campaign of “A Year of Celebration! Moose – Go the Distance” membership campaign, where the enrollment fees are being waived until April 30, 2014,and dues for new members for their first year in the Moose Legion is only $10.00. By using these tools I believe we can meet and exceed our membership goals.

    Fraternally,

    Gary Nelson

    PRESIDENT ’S REPORT

Brother Moose Legionnaires, It’s hard to believe that our year is half over. Time seems to really be flying by. I’m proud to report that as a jurisdiction, we are financially stable and our financial obligations for this fiscal year are complete. What we need to do now is start planning for next year. Your Board of Directors saved you approximately $100 this year by paying off our obligations early and earning the Director’s Key Club last year. In order to meet next year’s budget, we’re put-ting on several “fun” fundraising events for you. Please participate, you’ll have a good time, meet up with old friends, make new ones and help us prepare financially for next year. Also, please try to attend our Celebrations; not only does it make our new members feel welcome, but it encourages them to come back and be more involved. Remember what it was like when you joined.?. We can really use your help in the area of Membership Production and Membership Retention. Our quota this year is 29 new/former members, plus we have to end the year with 223 in order for us to qualify for the Fraternal Service Award. As of the writing of this article, we down 8 members. Not only is it important that we grow our numbers with new members, but it’s equally important that we keep the ones we have. On page 4 of this newsletter, you’ll find a list of Brothers who appear on our “expired” list. If you know any of them, please encourage them to pay their dues. The Moose Legion is a vital unit within the Fraternity, supporting our children at Mooseheart and senior members at Moosehaven. In closing, I’d like to congratulate our two new Fellows; Robert “Bob” Doty and Anthony “Tony” Cairo of the Bellflower Lodge. Keep up the good work gentlemen.

    Fraternally, Ben Pendleton

To All Moose Legion 6 Brothers, We have some great events scheduled which will show why we’re the degree of fun in this Fraternity. Please use these events as recruitment tools for potential new candidates and their families. We really need your support in what we do, so please join us. Let’s have a great year together.

    Fraternally, Hector Holguin

  • JUNIOR PAST PRESIDENT ’S REPORT

    Brother Moose Legionnaires

Southern California Moose Legion 6 is having a big fundraiser and BBQ on October 19 at the Norwalk Moose Family Cen-ter. It will start at 5 pm and include dinner and music. We would like to see all Moose Legionnaires come and support this event and also to sell tickets. Tickets are at your Lodges if you need extra please contact Vice President Gary Nelson . We have many events coming up in the next few months. We can only be a successful jurisdiction if you promote and come to the events. The more we get involved, the stronger we are as a Moose Legion.

I look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events. Fraternally, Adrian Martinez

Brother Carl Noyes of Bellflower passed away.

Brother Harold Durham of Norwalk passed away.

Brother Bob Giggy is home recovering from health issues. Brother Jim Wildes wife Melba passed away.

Please keep our Brothers and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

    FINANCIAL DIRECTOR ’S REPORT

    Brother Moose Legionnaires,

Our Moose Legion Secretary, Ben Pendleton, provides us with all the tools we need (expiring list, expired list, and dropped list) to grow Southern California Moose Legion 6 each and every year. November 3-9 is Member Retention Week. Please work with your Lodge in calling members who haven’t paid their dues yet. Most time when a Moose Legionnaire hasn’t paid his dues, he hasn’t paid his Lodge dues either. We all need to talk Moose Legion to every LOOM member eligible, but not yet a member of the Moose Legion. With just a minimal amount of effort, every Moose Legionnaire could sign two new or former members, and receive FREE DUES the following year. So lets go guys! Put forth a little effort and we will grow Southern Cali-fornia Moose Legion 6, and get FREE DUES next year.

    Fraternally, R. Mike Garner

    CONGRATULATIONS

DIRECTOR OF RITUAL, MOOSE LEGION AND HIGHER DEGREES

    Continued on page 7

Memo from Bob Neff, Director of Ritual, Moose Legion and Higher Degrees September 2013

MOOSE LEGION – GOING THE DISTANCE with Purpose and Pride

Student Trips Mooseheart to/from Moosehaven 2013 – Funding Completed! We are very grateful for the various Moose Legion jurisdictions and others that have been generous and sent in contributions to fund this year’s student trips. We have received thank you cards indicating that the students (and seniors) were very appreciative! Both groups seemed to have had a great time. Thank you to all of our caring members who stepped up to finance the trips again this year. Between attend-ing functions, buying raffle tickets and 50/50’s, etc., we have received enough to cover both the boys and the girl’s trips for this year. As previously indicated – we will move overages into another Moose Legion Fundraising Pro-ject account. Great job everyone!

Moose Legion Centennial Celebrations are Going the Distance! We continue to experience and hear about Moose Legion jurisdictions and Lodge Moose Legion Commit-tees that are holding Centennial Celebrations in honor of 100 years of fraternal service by the Moose Legion. Thank you to all that have planned or are planning these functions. The events have been simple dinners or ceremonies and elaborately planned full weekends and all concepts in between. It is very much appropriate that we hold these events to share with members (whether recently ad-vanced to the Moose Legion or a member of long standing) to share the Pride of belonging to a Degree of the Order that prides itself on Service. The recently published Moose Legion History Book we released at the Milwaukee convention gives a great bird’s eye view of our past century. Every Moose Legion unit ought to have copies available for local members to obtain. Some are selling them to help raise funds for the School renovation. Some give them to new members or to sponsors. However you might decide to use them is up to your fraternal unit. They are good tools to assist a potential sponsor in talking to a prospective Lodge member about advancing to the Moose Legion. The Lodge member often asks “what does the Moose Legion do?” This Centennial book is full of photos and brief articles to help you tell that story. But you need a copy to do it. They are available by contacting Catalog Sales (item No. 1013) at Moose International. Part of the proceeds will go to the Mooseheart School Reno-vation. It’s a win-win!

Future planning Your Moose Legion Council will hold its fall meeting next month in Gatlinburg, TN. There are several items on the agenda to be discussed in an effort to further promote positive results in membership building. That of course must include successful retention efforts of the members we already have so any new members being con-ferred can actually add to the total rather than simply replace a lost member. Part of that also depends on each jurisdiction and each Lodge Moose Legion Committee scheduling and pro-moting functions, activities and programs that interest the members and their families. It has often been said people are not really thrilled about attending meetings. But they like to attend interesting, fun well organized functions and will generally attend a short meeting while they are at such a function enjoying themselves. A full calendar of events is essential to any organization who wants members to participate. We certainly are not exempt. Events should be planned well in advance – with dates and details published in plenty of time for members to get it on their calendar and make plans to participate. Such planning should be published in newsletters and on websites. E-mail “blasts” can be sent out to mem-bers (that we have or can get addresses for) as a great quick inexpensive convenient way to spread our messages. Simple table tents or messages on placemats and bulletin boards can be helpful. More and more the use of social me-dia, such as Facebook, is playing a role in promoting our activities as well. No one means of communication is ideal to reach everyone.

That is partly why a full committee should be in place to help with promotions. Various personnel can take the lead as sub Chairman for certain areas of promotion under a general chairman’s guidance. Have someone who is artistic? Maybe they make posters. Someone else is good at writing articles – have them do a promo for the newslet-ter and web or email messages. You get the idea. The point is we have talent – we need to seek it out and utilize it. More people involved means more that will likely attend and support the program and maybe bring someone else with them to help swell the success of the event. Participation brings revenue and it builds interest in membership. Plan well. Do it in advance. Promote the program. Treat all members right and let them know they are ap-preciated. Continue the cycle. Enjoy your successes. We have a great PURPOSE and we serve to achieve it with PRIDE – I am honored to stand shoulder to shoulder with you. Thank you for allowing me that privilege. Together we will bring comfort to many and our ac-complishments will swell to new heights!

Cordially & fraternally, Bob Neff, PIP & Director

    Thank you!

I wish to thank everyone for their greetings and/or attendance at my Pilgrim Presentation. Special thanks to the Downey Lodge and Chapter on putting together such a great event. Thanks also to the Pilgrim Ritual Team and my mentors Harry Began and Mark L Klein. All of you made this a memorable event for me.
