LEADING LIGHT

Welcome

2 32

The days may seem short and dark at the moment, but February is a busy month on the further education and university calendar, particularly behind-the-scenes. We’ve just started the second semester where thoughts are turning to end of year exams and to next year’s budget.

In this newsletter we talk to Norman Bonney, IT Director, and Janet Al-Karaghouli, Senior Retail Officer from Brunel University, to help us further

understand the challenges universities are facing and their needs from the perspective of manufacturers. We also bring you money-saving ideas and great offers on colour lasers.

Your feedback is really important to us, so please let us know your views!”

We know IT teams in further education are dealing with hundreds of printers in different locations and supporting a variety of users. That’s why our network printers come with a free of charge network administration software – BRAdmin. In addition, if you buy a Brother machine through approved NEPA suppliers – you’re entitled to three years of on-site warranty, two months of ‘try before you buy’ and tailored engineer and helpdesk training.

DID YOUKNOW?Michelle Molloy,

Senior Education & Mobile Solutions Manager

Tell us about your role Norman – I direct the work of the Computer Centre which comprises of a corporate information services unit, a media and AV department and an academic computing services department, supporting about 15,000 students and 3,000 members of staff.Janet – I’m responsible for IT purchasing, working with manufacturers and resellers to find the best printing solutions for Brunel.

Norman, what are the key printing challenges faced by Brunel? Our main challenges are keeping to our green agenda and bearing down on the total cost of ownership. These are important areas as we have to be as cost effective as possible on both ‘carbon and cash’, especially looking ahead at future compliance requirements and likely public sector funding restrictions.

I recently conducted a Brother product evaluation, primarily in support of home office installations for key technical personnel and academic staff, which is a new phase for us. I’m pleased with every aspect of the machines I have been testing and hope we can make them part of the package for people involved in business

continuity planning and execution. From a director’s perspective, I can see an even stronger partnership with Brother emerging.

Janet, what are the benefits of the NEPA agreement for Brunel? The excellent three year warranty is worth a lot of money to us and it says a lot about Brother. It guarantees the products are good and are built to last.

Janet, how did you find your recent visit to Brother?I always find it interesting to visit a company’s headquarters to find out how things run on a day-to-day basis. I visited the helpdesk and experienced what happened when we call in for support and advice. It was important for me to see that the person we phone is based at Brother and knows the products extremely well. I find the longevity of the staff at Brother comforting and I was very impressed by the company.

I also attended a presentation on Brother’s environmental credentials which was excellent. The company is at the forefront of dealing with environmental issues.

Every issue we interview a leading light in education IT, to find out a little about the challenges they face and how they’re working with Brother to make a sustainable impact on learning. This issue, we meet Norman Bonney, IT Director and Janet Al-Karaghouli, Senior Retail Officer from Brunel University.

Happy New Year. Welcome to the latest edition of At Your Side, the dedicated newsletter for the further education and university sector.”

ON SOFTWARESPOTLIGHT

Print, copy and scan with our new compact inkjetsStudents and admin staff want their work to look polished. Colour printing can help achieve this by making a student assignment or department hand-out look more eye-catching and engaging.

Colour multifunction machines are often thought of as being bulky and expensive; therefore there would be no space for them in a small admin office or in the home. These factors are no longer a problem with our new A4 all-in-one inkjet range.

Our compact inkjet range is perfect for home office installations for key personnel and academic staff, or indeed for students’ home use.

The new models are part of our award-winning range. They offer low cost, high quality printing, copying and scanning, so nobody needs to wait around for prints. Plus, they’re compact enough to fit into a limited space.

All of the machines are Energy Star and Blue Angel accredited, meaning the range is as environmentally and ethically sustainable as possible. The range also benefits from low energy usage which is a great cost-saving feature.

Prices start from just £57 SRP ex VAT.

Dates for your diary

On the RoadWe’re demonstrating our continued commitment to the sector by making sure we’re on hand at all the important education events.

Last month we had a stand at the BETT show at London Olympia, where we demonstrated print solutions for the education sector, including wireless machines, mono and colour lasers and colour LEDs.

We held a prize draw each day where winners could choose between two prizes to suit their printing requirements. The prizes were a HL-3070CW compact colour printer or a QL-580N labeller and visitor ID solution. The three lucky winners were David Wiffen from Leicester, John Ord from Cleveland and John Nixon from Cumbria.
