Although today will be an exciting climax to the amateur season it will also be tinged with a great deal of sadness as we will all miss our good friend and colleague George Watson, who is sadly no longer with us. George was a stalwart of amateur football for many, many years having been Match Secretary of this great competition for over 25 years and I know he was always extremely proud when leading the teams out on cup final day. George epitomised the ethos of the amateur game and we hope todays final will be a fitting tribute to him. Todays Man of the Match will receive the George Watson Trophy which will be presented each year at the Final in recognition of Georges sterling service to amateur football. Great credit is due to todays teams Colville Park AFC and Hurlford Thistle AFC who are the last two standing from an initial entry of 604. The commitment, dedication and skills of both teams in reaching the final has to be greatly admired and I wish them both the very best of good luck as they compete to win what is widely acknowledged as the blue riband of amateur football. Our sincere thanks to Kilmarnock FC for allowing the Association to use their superb stadium for the final and I am sure that the excellent setting will bring out the best in both teams. These days the competition relies on IT much more than it once did. George embraced the changes though we suspect he may have had a wee smile when initially some gremlins screwed up the system! Georges enthusiasm and dedication was never in doubt. He lived and breathed this competition. George will be sadly missed, impossible to replace and he will be fondly remembered for many years to come. The George Watson Trophy, to be presented to The Man of the Match at each seasons final 5. This seasons Scottish Cup Final has both a familiar and unfamiliar look about it. The setting will be new to most - its 15 years since the Final was played at Rugby Park, St Pats being the 1999 winners. However the Colville Park v Hurlford Thistle tag will be anything but new to those who regularly attend SAFA finals or support either of our finalists. The two clubs faced each other in the 2012 Scottish Final. The honours went to the Ayrshire men that day but the following year the steelmen from Motherwell took their revenge in the West of Scotland Cup Final. The pair have already clashed this season when Hurlford squeaked through in a thrilling West Cup Quarter Final. It would be hard to dream up a more appetising encounter than todays skirmish. Colville Park will be determined to atone for 2012 and 2013 (when they lost to Wellhouse in the Final) while Hurlford, having already won the West Cup, are hoping to create their own bit of history as the first club to win the double since Knockentiber in 1997. It promises to be a nail-biting afternoon for the fans and hopefully a football treat for the rest of us. Over 600 clubs took part in this seasons competition....the final is the 10th Round so just getting here is no mean feat. A glance at the progression of both clubs (shown elsewhere in our Programme) will indicate that they both had some easier ties but also some narrow escapes. Both were held to draws at home and had to win replays away from home. Colville Park had to play in all of the 9 rounds but Lady Luck was kinder to Hurlford who got a bye in the 1st as well as a walkover into the Semi Finals when two of the well fancied clubs were eliminated from the Cup. Both of the Semi Finals were played at Hamilton. Colville Park and Glasgow Harp served up a good, hard fought match which was decided by an injury time penalty conversion from Alex Clearie which put Colville 3-1 ahead. Colvilles other scorers were Boyce and McAulay. Eastfield held Hurlford to a one goal lead at the interval but a second half blitz gave the Ayrshire side a 5-0 win. Scorers were Robertson, Hunter, Gold, Mullen and Knapp. Our match officials today are all very experienced referees and we are confident that Gordon Clarkson and his colleagues will handle the match effectively. Originally founded as Colvilles AFC in 1968, team selection was initially restricted to workers from Ravenscraig and other steelworks in the Motherwell area. Even operating in the Fifth Division of the Lanarkshire AFA they found life difficult, and consequently in 1970 the club was rebranded as Colville Park AFC, and opened up to a broader selection of players. (The Club is now part of the excellent sports and social complex at Colville Park Country Club who are, of course, sponsors of the West of Scotland Amateur Cup.) Colville Park AFC remained members of the LAFA for some 20 years going on to win several domestic honours with them. The major achievement of that era was winning the Scottish Amateur Cup in season 1975/6. In season 1990/91, Colville Park moved to the Central Scottish AFL, and although they took a little while to adapt, are now well-established in the Premier Division of the League, considered by many to be the most competitive in Scottish amateur football. Several domestic honours have been won, including the Cinema Cup, McAvoy McIntyre Trophy, League Cup, First Division Championship and Premier Division Championship. We have been Premier Division champions for the last two seasons, going through last years campaign unbeaten to secure the championship on the last day of the season by a single point from local rivals and fellow Scottish Cup finalists Wellhouse. At National level, Colville Park has an excellent track record, reaching the semi-final stage of the Scottish Amateur Cup for the last 5 seasons, and this will be our 3rd consecutive appearance in the final. Unfortunately we have lost out on both previous occasions -- to todays opponents Hurlford Thistle in 2011/12 and to local Central Scottish rivals Wellhouse on penalties in a closely-contested final last year. In the West of Scotland Cup we also have a good record having reached the semi-finals in 2005/6 and the final in 2009/10 when we narrowly lost out to local rivals Harestanes. We were beaten finalists again in 2011/12, losing out on penalties to Dumbarton Academy but eventually won the trophy last season by beating todays opponents Hurlford Thistle 2 0 in a closely fought final at New Douglas Park, Hamilton. Colville Parks recent successful record is due largely to the dedicated efforts of Gerry Hamilton, an experienced campaigner who is now in his 9th season as Manager. The Gaffer is ably-assisted by Scott Duncan while Robert Rab Sneddon has also brought his extensive and successful managerial experience at Junior level to many of our training sessions. James Mulvay (Defender) Strong central defender in his first season at the club. The former Scottish internationalist has brought great experience and stability to the squad. Michael McGarry (Defender) Good versatile player in his third season Michael can play in defence or midfield roles. Lance Pearce (Defender) Experienced defender signed at the start of the season. Can play in various defensive roles, has had senior experience and is a current Scottish Amateur Internationalist. It is 17 years since the same club won both the Scottish and the West of Scotland Cups in the same season. Knockentiber was the club and in that same season our hosts, Kilmarnock FC won the senior Scottish Cup. Today Hurlford Thistle will aim to match Knockentibers achievement and although Killie cannot take the Scottish, Hurlfords Junior neighbours Hurlford United are through to the Final of the Scottish Junior Cup here at Rugby Park in a couple of weeks time. Hurlford Thistle are one of Ayrshires longest established clubs but for most of the clubs history the notion of a major Cup Final appearance would have been looked on as a somewhat fanciful idea. In 2002 they won promotion to the Ayrshire Premier League and in 2002/3 they finished a respectable 6th in the Premier and won the South Ayrshire Cup. In 2003/4 they retained the South Cup but more importantly they won the Premier League to establish themselves as one of Ayrshires top clubs. A West Cup semi-final followed in 2004/5 when they made it three in a row in the South Cup and added the Donsport Trophy for good measure. Subsequent seasons brought more cup success. Hurlford won the Ayrshire Cup for the first time in 2010 and completed the Double by winning the Premier League. They retained their league title in 2011, 2012, 2013 and they have the 2014 title in the bag and also won the South Cup (now known as the Thistle Bar Trophy) in 2011, 12 and 13. In 2009, the club went to Hampden for their first ever Scottish Cup Final and although they lost to Queens Park it was a memorable day for everyone connected to the club. They were back in the Final in 2012 and lifted the Cup with a 2-0 win over Colville Park. The two clubs also clashed in last seasons West Final but on that occasion the honours went to Colville Park. Success in the West Cup was only delayed and they won the Cup at Hamilton earlier this month with a 2-0 win over Giffnock North. They have just clinched their 5th consecutive Ayrshire Premier championship and will be playing to retain the Ayrshire Cup later this month (an Ayrshire Cup win would be their 3rd on the trot) Hurlfords record, particularly in the last 13 years, is outstanding. Managed by Hugh Houston and David Walker, two very experienced men in amateur and junior football, they play with an attacking style which has been both successful and entertaining. The squad has a good balance of experience and youth with some prolific goal scorers. They are supported by a very active set-up and will be well prepared for todays clash. Hurlford know Colville Park well and will show them the greatest of respect but they will be determined to continue their winning run here at Rugby Park. We all hope it will be a great Final. The outcome? : were on the fence!! 13. Hurlford Winning the West Seen at many of the SAFA Semi-Finals and Finals, the boys from Wolves Boys Club will be working hard to retrieve the balls which find their way into the stands or further afield! It is 17 years since the same club won both the Scottish and the West of Scotland Cups in the same season. Knockentiber was the club and in that same season our hosts, Kilmarnock FC won the senior Scottish Cup. Today Hurlford Thistle will aim to match Knockentibers achievement and although Killie cannot take the Scottish, Hurlfords Junior neighbours Hurlford United are through to the Final of the Scottish Junior Cup here at Rugby Park in a couple of weeks time. Hurlford Thistle are one of Ayrshires longest established clubs but for most of the clubs history the notion of a major Cup Final appearance would have been looked on as a somewhat fanciful idea. In 2002 they won promotion to the Ayrshire Premier League and in 2002/3 they finished a respectable 6th in the Premier and won the South Ayrshire Cup. In 2003/4 they retained the South Cup but more importantly they won the Premier League to establish themselves as one of Ayrshires top clubs. A West Cup semi-final followed in 2004/5 when they made it three in a row in the South Cup and added the Donsport Trophy for good measure. Subsequent seasons brought more cup success. Hurlford won the Ayrshire Cup for the first time in 2010 and completed the Double by winning the Premier League. They retained their league title in 2011, 2012, 2013 and they have the 2014 title in the bag and also won the South Cup (now known as the Thistle Bar Trophy) in 2011, 12 and 13. In 2009, the club went to Hampden for their first ever Scottish Cup Final and although they lost to Queens Park it was a memorable day for everyone connected to the club. They were back in the Final in 2012 and lifted the Cup with a 2-0 win over Colville Park. The two clubs also clashed in last seasons West Final but on that occasion the honours went to Colville Park. Success in the West Cup was only delayed and they won the Cup at Hamilton earlier this month with a 2-0 win over Giffnock North. They have just clinched their 5th consecutive Ayrshire Premier championship and will be playing to retain the Ayrshire Cup later this month (an Ayrshire Cup win would be their 3rd on the trot) Hurlfords record, particularly in the last 13 years, is outstanding. Managed by Hugh Houston and David Walker, two very experienced men in amateur and junior football, they play with an attacking style which has been both successful and entertaining. The squad has a good balance of experience and youth with some prolific goal scorers. They are supported by a very active set-up and will be well prepared for todays clash. Hurlford know Colville Park well and will show them the greatest of respect but they will be determined to continue their winning run here at Rugby Park. We all hope it will be a great Final. Mikey Brown (Defender) Consistent, reliable defender, in his second season. Has quickly established himself and was selected for the International match in Dumfries last month. Unfortunately Mikey suffered a leg break playing against Northern Ireland last season and this kept him out till mid-season. Jamie Daily (Defender) 7th year with the club; defensive stalwart, can slot in anywhere. His involvement has been hampered by illness this season. Second season as club captain, leads by example. James Mulvay (Defender) Strong central defender in his first season at the club. The former Scottish internationalist has brought great experience and stability to the squad. Michael McGarry (Defender) Good versatile player in his third season Michael can play in defence or midfield roles. Lance Pearce (Defender) Experienced defender signed at the start of the season. Can play in various defensive roles, has had senior experience and is a current Scottish Amateur Internationalist. Thomas Tee Airlie (Midfielder) Joined from Celtic Boys Club and now in his 3rd season. Can also play in defence and on either flank. Played for Scotland in the UEFA Regions Cup. Brian Glancy (Midfielder) Versatile and experienced left-sided player in his 3rd season. Played in the UEFA Regions Cup but serious injury has curtailed his season. Alex Beansie Clearie (Midfielder) Versatile and experienced midfielder now in his 2nd season. Likes to get forward to support forwards, and has scored some spectacular goals. Represented Scotland against Leinster and converted the penalty which secured victory for the Scots. Also scored from the penalty spot in the Semi with Glasgow Harp. 21. Originally founded as Colvilles AFC in 1968, team selection was initially restricted to workers from Ravenscraig and other steelworks in the Motherwell area. Even operating in the Fifth Division of the Lanarkshire AFA they found life difficult, and consequently in 1970 the club was rebranded as Colville Park AFC, and opened up to a broader selection of players. (The Club is now part of the excellent sports and social complex at Colville Park Country Club who are, of course, sponsors of the West of Scotland Amateur Cup.) Colville Park AFC remained members of the LAFA for some 20 years going on to win several domestic honours with them. The major achievement of that era was winning the Scottish Amateur Cup in season 1975/6. In season 1990/91, Colville Park moved to the Central Scottish AFL, and although they took a little while to adapt, are now well-established in the Premier Division of the League, considered by many to be the most competitive in Scottish amateur football. Several domestic honours have been won, including the Cinema Cup, McAvoy McIntyre Trophy, League Cup, First Division Championship and Premier Division Championship. We have been Premier Division champions for the last two seasons, going through last years campaign unbeaten to secure the championship on the last day of the season by a single point from local rivals and fellow Scottish Cup finalists Wellhouse. At National level, Colville Park has an excellent track record, reaching the semi-final stage of the Scottish Amateur Cup for the last 5 seasons, and this will be our 3rd consecutive appearance in the final. Unfortunately we have lost out on both previous occasions -- to todays opponents Hurlford Thistle in 2011/12 and to local Central Scottish rivals Wellhouse on penalties in a closely-contested final last year. In the West of Scotland Cup we also have a good record having reached the semi-finals in 2005/6 and the final in 2009/10 when we narrowly lost out to local rivals Harestanes. We were beaten finalists again in 2011/12, losing out on penalties to Dumbarton Academy but eventually won the trophy last season by beating todays opponents Hurlford Thistle 2 0 in a closely fought final at New Douglas Park, Hamilton. Colville Parks recent successful record is due largely to the dedicated efforts of Gerry Hamilton, an experienced campaigner who is now in his 9th season as Manager. The Gaffer is ably-assisted by Scott Duncan while Robert Rab Sneddon has also brought his extensive and successful managerial experience at Junior level to many of our training sessions. This seasons Scottish Cup Final has both a familiar and unfamiliar look about it. The setting will be new to most - its 15 years since the Final was played at Rugby Park, St Pats being the 1999 winners. However the Colville Park v Hurlford Thistle tag will be anything but new to those who regularly attend SAFA finals or support either of our finalists. The two clubs faced each other in the 2012 Scottish Final. The honours went to the Ayrshire men that day but the following year the steelmen from Motherwell took their revenge in the West of Scotland Cup Final. The pair have already clashed this season when Hurlford squeaked through in a thrilling West Cup Quarter Final. It would be hard to dream up a more appetising encounter than todays skirmish. Colville Park will be determined to atone for 2012 and 2013 (when they lost to Wellhouse in the Final) while Hurlford, having already won the West Cup, are hoping to create their own bit of history as the first club to win the double since Knockentiber in 1997. It promises to be a nail-biting afternoon for the fans and hopefully a football treat for the rest of us. Over 600 clubs took part in this seasons competition....the final is the 10th Round so just getting here is no mean feat. A glance at the progression of both clubs (shown elsewhere in our Programme) will indicate that they both had some easier ties but also some narrow escapes. Both were held to draws at home and had to win replays away from home. Colville Park had to play in all of the 9 rounds but Lady Luck was kinder to Hurlford who got a bye in the 1st as well as a walkover into the Semi Finals when two of the well fancied clubs were eliminated from the Cup. Both of the Semi Finals were played at Hamilton. Colville Park and Glasgow Harp served up a good, hard fought match which was decided by an injury time penalty conversion from Alex Clearie which put Colville 3-1 ahead. Colvilles other scorers were Boyce and McAulay. Eastfield held Hurlford to a one goal lead at the interval but a second half blitz gave the Ayrshire side a 5-0 win. Scorers were Robertson, Hunter, Gold, Mullen and Knapp. Our match officials today are all very experienced referees and we are confident that Gordon Clarkson and his colleagues will handle the match effectively. When George died in March, the SAFA lost a tireless worker and many lost a valued colleague and a close personal friend. George was, of course, a great character. These days the competition relies on IT much more than it once did. George embraced the changes though we suspect he may have had a wee smile when initially some gremlins screwed up the system! Georges enthusiasm and dedication was never in doubt. He lived and breathed this competition. George will be sadly missed, impossible to replace and he will be fondly remembered for many years to come. The George Watson Trophy, to be presented to The Man of the Match at each seasons final 25. As President of the Scottish Amateur Football Association I am extremely pleased to extend a very warm welcome to you all to Rugby Park for todays Fosters Scottish Amateur Cup Final. Although today will be an exciting climax to the amateur season it will also be tinged with a great deal of sadness as we will all miss our good friend and colleague George Watson, who is sadly no longer with us. George was a stalwart of amateur football for many, many years having been Match Secretary of this great competition for over 25 years and I know he was always extremely proud when leading the teams out on cup final day. George epitomised the ethos of the amateur game and we hope todays final will be a fitting tribute to him. Todays Man of the Match will receive the George Watson Trophy which will be presented each year at the Final in recognition of Georges sterling service to amateur football. Great credit is due to todays teams Colville Park AFC and Hurlford Thistle AFC who are the last two standing from an initial entry of 604. The commitment, dedication and skills of both teams in reaching the final has to be greatly admired and I wish them both the very best of good luck as they compete to win what is widely acknowledged as the blue riband of amateur football. Our sincere thanks to Kilmarnock FC for allowing the Association to use their superb stadium for the final and I am sure that the excellent setting will bring out the best in both teams.
