Mayoral Welcome I would like to take this opportunity

of extending a warm welcome to players competing in the Foster's Shield Interstate Match between N .S. W. and A.C.T.

Wagga Wagga is proud to host this important game which will provide an opportunity for country people from this city and its surrounding areas to witness what I am sure will be an excellent and exciting spectacle of Australian Football played by renowned local , intrastate and interstate footballers.

Competition will be keen between the opposing teams but I am sure the game will be played in the right spirit and provide great entertainment to the spectators.

EDITORIAL Aspirations now heing nurtured hy New South

Wales and the ACT to even tua ll y take part in the proposed natio nwide Australia n Football competition will he either boosted or tempora rily put hack in the Fosters Shield interstate challenge series game at Maher Oval todav .

NSW had little chance of success last ,car after losing the opening game tn Quee nsla nd iit \1aher Oval by 56 points .

It was to t-.SW credi t however that the, regrouped and almost cau:,cd what would have hccn a huge upset ar,a inst Tasmania in Hohart and then convincingly heating ACT in Canberra.

Queensland, coached by former Riverina champion footballer Laurie Pendrick. trounced ACT and eas il v defeated Ta~ma nia in Brisbane to win the seco~d division title .

One of the biggest problems facing NSW has been organising effective training sessions in Sydney and the R iverina, where considerab le travelling is involved, and then bringing the two squads toge ther at either Sydney or Wagga.

Preliminary moves this year to strengthen th e NSW team with eligible players from Albury . Corowa, Lavington, North A lbury (Ovens and Murray League) and Murray League NSW based clubs, Dcniliqu in , Berrigan. Finley. Jcrildcric. Tocumwal, did no t eventuate .

But thi s has not detcred recently appointed NSW State coach Greg Leech and fellow Wagga based Riverina Football League coach-State selector Greg Sheather from accept ing th e very demanding challenge of leading N SW to foo tball glory.

Leech, who coached then Ganmain to the South West League premiership in 1976, East Wagga-

Kooringal in Farrer League ( 1979) and Mangoph,hCookard inia United to the Farrer League Division I last year. has all the qualities and high personal standards to once again reach the top.

He will be doing battle today with Brian Quade , who coached then East Wagga to the Central Riverina League premiership in 1976 and. like Leech, went on the represent NSW as a ruckman from Ariah Park-Mirrool.

Quade stood down from coaching ACT last year to concentrate on coaching Qucanheyan to their first ACT league se niors !lag since 1941.

His huge influence throughout the club was demonst rated when the Tigers a lso won the reserves. finished third in Under I 9s and stopped Ainslie's do mination in the club championship.

The Nesbitt Trophy (donated by the late Neville Nesb itt of Wagga) will he fough t for again, after an abse nce of some years, between rivals Riverina and Farrer football leagues. The magnificent 60cm (2') trophy . originally costing in excess of £. has been ·brushed up · and will be the centre of attention in the ea rlier game today . The Nesbitt Trophy dates hack to l 959 when South Western District Football League defeated Farrer Football League. Since then S .W.D .F.L. has won 11 ti mes to Farrer\ six. with S.W.D.F.L. the l;i st to win in 1975 .

Following th e great success of the inaugura l preseason day-night carnival won by Wagga Tigers and Tcmora. playing today's gala program at Maher Oval is .mother step towarJs consol idating and developing Aust ra lia Footba ll throughout southern NSW. playing as many big games as possible at the biggest centre of population - Wagga and Narrandcra .

N. S. W. Australian Football League President's Message

A warm welcome is extended to visitors to Wagga from the A .C.T. and throughout N.S.W. for today's Foster's Shield match between N.S.W. and the A.C.T.

1986 will be the second year that Wagga has hosted a Foster's Shield game, with the inaugural game in 1985 against Queensland being an outstanding success. That 1985 game marked the beginning of a very successful year for the N .S. W . team with a subsequent narrow loss to Tasmania in controversial circumsta nces, followed by a good win over the A .C.T. in Canberra .

The N.S.W. team isconfidentofhuilding on 1985 with improved performances in 1986.

Today's N .S. W. team will include players from areas as geographically diverse as Grafton, Broken Hill, Sydney and Leeton .

Unfortunately there are still many senior players in Southern N .S. W . who aspire to represent their Sta te at a senior level who are prevented from doing so by the varied attitudes of some admi nistrators. Hopefully commonsense and the interests of players can prevail in future years.

The support of the Riverina Aust rali an Football Cluh is greatly appreciated together with the Organising Committee for today's arrangcmc;ts. especially Phil Le Pet(tt , Michae l Daniher and Max Chapman for their untiring efforts to make today an outstanding success .

Enjoy the game and may the best team win.

DARYLL SMITH President N. S. W. F. L.

A. C. T. Australian Football League President's Message

It is with a deal of pleasure that we travel to Wagga to meet N .S. W. in our firs t Foster's Shield match for 1986. Since we were last here in 1980 there have heen many developments in Australian Football at the Nationa l level and we have also heen very active in the Capital Territory.

A .C. T.A.F.L . h as adopted "The National Game in the National Capital" as one of its slogans. Naturally we see success of · the Canberra Costain Cats in the Fosters Shield as an important part of our programme to continue to mainta in a competitive position against rival codes.

On the local scene we have reduced our se nior competition from 7 to 6 tea ms hv the amalgamation of the former Belconneri and West Canberra Clubs to form the new Belconnen Footba ll Club (Belconnen Magpies). Results in our pre-season competit ion have already indicated that the move will pay off. We have also admitted the new Australian Defence Force Academy. Australian National University and the Royal Military College to our Reserve Grade competit ion . Again early results indicate that the Reserve Grade will be a very keen competition in 1986.

At the representative level following a poor 1985 season we have re-organised at hoth the playing and administrative leve l. We arc naturally hoping that. with the influx of new blood under coach Brian Quade, we will at least he as successful as 1984 when we lost the Shield hy less than one percentage point to Queensland .

Whatever the result I wish both teams luck and trust we have a close and interesting game.

A.C.T. Coach: Brian Quade

All those involved with the A.C.T. representative team are looking forward to an improved showing from the side in this year's series to atone for an indifferent performance in 1985.

This match is our only away match and represents a major hurdle in our quest for the title which narrowly eluded the side in 1984.

There is a good blend of youth and experience in the team and all have shown to date that they have the commitment required for representative football. A number of players make their A.C.T. debut today as a result of gqod recruiting drives by various clubs. I congratulate them and all players on their selection and wish them well for the match. Again there has been heavy influx of Riverina players to the A.C.T. this season as clubs continue to recognise this region as a prime recrui'ting area.

From past experiences we are well aware that it will be a difficult task to overcome the N. S. W. side today and the ensuing battle should assure those in attendance enjoy a great game of football.

I wish N. S. W. and Greg Leech the best of luck for a good match but hope the A.C.T. is the victor on the day.
