CALLED TO GRATITUDE: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LIVE GRATEFULLY?

When I need a pick me up, I o en take a walk around the parish to observe the goings on. Very o en, I have the pleasure of mee ng and talking with our volunteer ministers at work. In some ways, the experience is a li le like watching a quilt being constructed. Each hour of each day is a quilt square, with a parishioner volun-teering their me to make that square a reali-ty. Answering phones in the parish office. Making cop-ies of music for the choir. Picking up trash. Raking leaves. Filing documents. Answering phones. Feeding our Koi fish. Placing flowers in the sanctuary. Picking up communion to bring to the sick and homebound. Re-hearsing music. Pain ng a door. Decora ng the Serra Center for liturgy. Each act, carefully and lovingly done, builds our community and fills out the quilt. Slow but steady, hour by hour, day upon day, one act of love at a

me, this parish is pieced together. When I try to respond to these acts of generosity, my words feel inadequate. "Thank you" is not enough when you truly see the presence of God through the kindness of the people you meet. When I ask what mo-

vates them? O en they say that they are grateful for all they have. They want to give something back to God. This "a tude of gra tude" has changed the way they live and work and give. They can see God's place in their lives. They are aware of His blessings. So, how did they get to this viewpoint? What spiritu-al prac ces did they put in place? For most of us, grow-ing an a tude of gra tude takes a conscious effort. In a real way, these parishioners have managed to turn their eyes away from what they want, or what they wish they had, and instead look at the ways in which they've been blessed. There's a spirit of hopefulness about them. Of looking forward, not back all the me. When I talk to these folks to ask their "secret", many speak about the power of the Eucharist. (Did you know, the word Eucha-rist means to give thanks?) A number go to daily Mass, or weekly mass. Some are involved in bible studies, or go on retreats at the Old Mission. Whatever they do, they choose to go the extra mile to be aware of the full-ness of Christ's presence with us. They gather as mem-bers of the Body of Christ to feel his presence, and then go out into the community to share what they've expe-rienced.

This weekend, we celebrate Cateche cal Sunday, where as a community, we bless and say thank you for the me and talent of those who have stepped forward to share their faith with our children. Next weekend is Welcome Sunday, where the ministries of our parish will invite you on Sunday a er masses to join them in piecing our parish together, one act of love at a me. I hope to see you there around one of the tables, called to gra tude, stepping out in faith. May our generous and loving God bless you and give you peace, this week and always. Fr. David

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

In today’s Gospel, Jesus con nues to turn society’s idea of greatness upside down. He teaches that true greatness lies in being a servant to others; a good stew-ard of our rela onships. We want success, but Jesus de-fines success differently than we do. Jesus redefines our no on of greatness and success. How do we define suc-cess? Is our no on of success consistent with the teach-ings of Jesus Christ?

Archivando documentos. Alimentando a nuestros peces Koi. Quieren devol-ver algo a Dios.

¡Gracias!
