Facebook is Trying to be Less Creepy

Why This Matters to Your Clients:• No information has been released on how this will affect company pages, but ensure that all new company pages

edit privacy settings to allow a public profile to increase engagement and audience• Additionally, if your company or brand pays for 3rd party app advertisements, you’ll want to make sure that you’re

not being pushed to the side and removed from News Feeds across the network

• Facebook announced that those who join the social network will find their postings automatically set to “friends” as opposed to public.

• This is only affective for NEW users; current users will continue to have the settings they selected

• First-time posters will see a reminder to choose their audiences. Should they not do so, it will default to “friends.”

• Facebook also began downplaying passive updates from 3rd party apps

• This will lead to fewer instances of updates that clog up News Feeds

• Explicitly shared stories shared from 3rd party apps gain more engagement than implicitly shared stories

Facebook Introduces New Permissions & Anonymous Logins• Users will be able to decide what permissions they want to

give an app before signing-up and logging into that app

• Additionally, apps will have to gain user permission before posting to Facebook on one’s behalf

• This new process is intended to help build user trust in using Facebook as a login tool for outside apps

• The new login is set to roll out in the next few months

• Anonymous logins are NOT completely anonymous – Facebook will know who you are – but the app maker will not

• Users can log in anonymously across devices and apps

• If a user chooses to upgrade to regular Facebook login to get better features for that app, they can take a few easy steps to do so

Why This Matters to Your Clients:• Very important for brands/companies that produce apps, with login options via Facebook• This change will help users build trust with your app, knowing that they do not have to divulge all information upfront and

asking only for the information that users want to share and that you, as a brand, really need • As an app holder, brands will still be given access to user information, within reason, helping to reduce the abundance of

information currently provided by each user

Facebook’s New App Links Are a Big Deal

Why This Matters to Your Clients:• Tracking engagement across channels will most likely become easier, as your brand will be able to follow a set click direction

from Facebook to another channel without being interrupted• For brands that develop apps on their Facebook page and direct fans to outside links (to an app), this will become very useful

– again – cross promotion without interruption• Should a brand develop their own app (with developers, etc.), this is a huge move, making it much easier and still good news

• Facebook announced at their F8 Conference earlier this month that they will be introducing App Links for developers

• App Links will make it easier for developers to link other applications from their own apps

• I.e. – If a user is in the messenger app on Facebook and clicks on a link to Instagram, the link will direct to that image via Instagram as opposed to opening up in the mobile browser in a new window

• This type of app-to-app linking DOES exist, but it is difficult for developers to navigate, as it works differently across different devices

• App Links is an open source and free for all users

• Currently supports iOS, Android & Windows Phone – soon to expand to other platforms

• Facebook’s own apps support App Links

• In order for this feature to work, users much have the app installed on their phone - should they not, they will be directed to the App Store

Twitter Adds Mute Button• Twitter has added a mute feature for users on both desktop

and the mobile app

• Users are able to mute another user without the muted user knowing that they have been muted

• You can unmute and muted user at any time

• Muted users will still be able to follow and interact with your content

• You can follow a user that you’ve muted – muting a user does NOT mean you are unfollowing them

• @ replies and @ mentions from muted users you follow will still appear in your Notifications tab

• Muted users you follow can still send you a direct message

• When you mute a user, their previous Tweets will still be displayed – they will stop showing from the time you have muted them and moving forward

• **The new mute button has NO EFFECT on promoted tweets

Why This Matters to Your Clients:• While users can block advertisers, brands that use promoted tweets are safeguarded from this feature, allowing those dollars to

remain in good use – advertisers are unstoppable and firmly have an upper hand in this game• Allows brands to mute users that they may have needed to follow for campaign or direct messaging purposes (courtesy follows),

without unfollowing a user and breaking ties – but be careful not to unfollow those whose tweets will benefit you!
