Alvin, Angie, Jeremy, Yau & ann Rosieand I gathered at the LCCT to board theflight to Taipei. Poay Lim & ann Jennyhad gone ahead on Sunday to “pavethe way for us”.

President Jeff, Win, SS Lee & ann Bettyand Poay Lim & Jenny were at Taipeiairport to receive us; and Pres Jeffbowled us off our feet with a bouquet oflovely lilies each.

The welcome dinner was such a noisyaffair, typical of long lost friendscatching up. RC Bugis Junction in theform of PE Nelson, Joey, Bobby, guestEddie and family members were alsopresent. The hosts outnumbered thevisitors by 3:1. What a rousing and hotwelcome it was!

19 May 2010

The coach bus pushed off punctually atabout 8:30am to take us to La LaMountain. After about 2 hours ofwinding road, we reached Gao YiPrimary School, one of the boardingschools for the aboriginal children; arecipient of the Matching Grant for thesolar panels project for remoteschools.

There were 3 other schools in moreremote, less accessible locationswhich were part of the Matching Grantwhich RCBKS contributed USD3,000and other Taipei clubs also participatedin the matching. I snapped pictures ofthe assets mounted on the roof. Thisschool received only one solar panel. The other 3 schools got a total of 13solar panels.

On arrival, we were treated to freshlypicked home grown peaches andrefreshing coffee/plum juice. Thepresentation ceremony took placequickly; the children gave a welcometraditional dance, later visitors wereinvited to dance along; the boys playedwooden tops and we took turns topound rice dough for fresh “mua chi”dessert. Shortly afterwards lunch wasserved. The school kitchen cooked us atasty buffet (included a sashimi even)

while the children were restricted to theirusual diet of rice, soup, one vegetableand one meat.

We observed the children in theirclassroom, and going about their dailyroutine (wash up plate/cup, brush teeth, sweep floor etc).

Those who visited the school in May2009 would remember the “deputyprincipal”, the dark one. Poay Lim had achat with it in the cool shade of thepeach field. We were allowed into thepeach field to pluck ripe peaches for ourown consumption. Dee..li..cious...!

The next itinerary was a boat ride in Shi-Men dam. The place became famousdue to movies shot on location. Theevening was wrapped up with a bigdinner. Some Rotarians who could notjoin us for the day’s outing drove thelong journey to have dinner together. Themenu comprised 7 different types offishes.

LAST WEEK'S SPEAKER

Collin Whitehead- NLP

There are 2 important principles of NLP.

1- As human beings, we don’t under-stand the reality, we only understandthe perceptions of the reality. Werespond to the world around us throughour sensory represen-tational systems. It means that it is “neuro-linguistic” mapof reality which determines how we behave, but not the reality itself.

2- The processes taking place within a human being and between human beingsand environment are systematic. It is not possible to isolate the part of thesystem from the rest of the system.

Training in Neuro Linguistic Programming benefits you in different ways. It mainlyhelps to maximize your power of communication with others. NLP also helps tounderstand and alter unconscious behaviors. NLP teaches how our brain works, how we store the information and the most important, how we can change ourbehaviors etc. NLP techniques are widely used in teaching, self help, management and other spheres. NLP is generally taught in an acceleratedmanner using direct examples and hands-on experimental training. One of thebest ways to learn NLP is working with NLP practitioner.

The ancient artifacts and works of art were transported from China when Chiang KaiShek escaped into Taiwan. We were told that exhibits were rotated from time to timeand it would take years before they are repeated! That’s how much treasures havebeen stashed away. The anniversary dinner took on an early start and was full ofpageantry. [See separate write up by Poay Lim].

21 May

We used a coach bus to take us to Chiu Fen, a town once famous for its gold mining.Today the gold ecological park has been turned into an educational tourist site. Thelunch was excellent, a recommendation by the cousin of Huck. The little villagetucked away, is only accessible via very narrow roads.

The old town at Chiu Fun offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains andvalleys. They men sat down to admire the views while waiting for the ladies to dotheir shopping. The old village requires a climb up a long alley, with shops on bothsides. Angie got totally confused and ended up doing more than her fair share ofstairs exercise.

Dinner that night was a nice change from the 10 course dinners we had been eating. We were left to explore the street food in Keelung night market. With anns Betty andLinda and Huck taking charge of Angie, Joey and myself, we ate to our hearts’content.

22 May

The programme today took us to the Dharma Drum Mountain monastery. Thebuilding is the result of one man’s vision. Master Sheng Yen. The sprawling complexis awesome and peaceful. We later visited a museum with a difference. We learntthat it is important to observe the following rules while we eat the vegetarian lunchmeal. Men and women sit in separate sections of the huge dining hall. No talkingallowed. To chew your food thoroughly and pick the food after you have swallowedwhat is in your mouth. Such deliberate actions are supposed to be conducive for oneto reflect on ones inner thoughts. For one thing it did force me to eat much moreslowly and calmly.

We later visited a museum with a difference. It was the sweat and tears of aphilanthropic artist Ju Ming whobuilt, financed and donated his work pieces to the

Juming Museum. Next, a visit toTheresa Teng’s memorial. Herfamous songs are played throughoutthe day and her corner is decoratedwith musical ornaments.

Then it is time to proceed to our fare-well dinner. The car driven by Dentist, carryingAngie and I was the last toarrive (we were one hour late) due totraffic congestion.

This farewell dinner was very comical,as each and every visiting Rotarian wasasked to say a few words. Some spokein proficient Mandarin while others like yours truly got corrected every now andthen. Of course our host also provided “translation” services with fun intended, words quickly got lost in translation. These drew a lot of laughter. And it was alovely way to close off the day.

23 May

Quickly it is time to pack up and say “chai chien” (see you again) to our lovely andcaring hosts. Pres Jeff, Win and Betty went with us to the airport to make sureeverything was in order and left only after we walked through the departure gate.

Conclusion

I wish to conclude by saying a BIG Thank You to all Rotarians of RC Chung-LiChung-Shing and also to RC Bugis Junction for their hand in friendship. HoweverI would need to single out several key individuals who worked overtime to makeour trip more enjoyable.
