Message from Sajuki Tanaka

President, Rotary International

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

I am a Japanese businessman, and Iwear a suit almost every day. The Rotarypin is always on my lapel. It is therebecause I am proud to be a Rotarian.

Anywhere I go, people will see the pinand know who I am. Other Rotarianswill see it and know that I am a friend, and people who are not Rotarians willsee it as well. I want to be sure that allof them also understand the meaning ofthis pin.

This is why I am asking all of you to wear your Rotary pin and to raise awarenessof what the pin means. I believe having that pin on your lapel changes you. Itmakes you think more before you speak and before you act. It makes youremember, all the time, that you are a Rotarian - and that as Rotarians, we arethere to help.

All of us should be ready to talk about Rotary. When someone asks you about

that pin, you should be ready to answer. What is Rotary? What does Rotary do?These are questions that each of us should always be prepared to answer.

We cannot go to prospective members and ask them to join Rotary only becausewe want more members. We have to show them that Rotary is a wonderfulorganisation, and that they will be happier because they belong to Rotary.

When we ask people to join Rotary, we are doing this to help them as well. I thinkall of us are grateful to the person who asked us to join. I know that my life ismuch happier, and has been much more productive, because of Rotary. It isclear to me that the day I joined the Rotary Club of Yashio was a day when I tookmy first step down a different path in life - a path of greater connection, greatersatisfaction, and deeper sense of fulfillment and peace.

This is a feeling that I want to share with others. And I know that one way to dothat is through bringing in new members. But we must also do it by raisingawareness of Rotary and Rotary's work, by focusing on our Public image andwearing our Rotary pins every day.

Scuba enthusiasts dive deep foradventure

On a dive trip in 1991, members of theInternational Fellowship of Rotarian ScubaDivers decided to take a group photo – under water.“We practiced our formation on deck, then

dived in, organized our pyramid, and tookthe photo,” recalls Judith Kaufman, one ofthe original members of the fellowship. “Isuggested the caption ‘Surface Above Self.’”The motto stuck. Gordon Stevenson, amember of the Rotary Club of TaupoExpresso, New Zealand, had founded thefellowship a year earlier. In those days, membership totaled about 10 people, according to Robert Ewald, a member ofthe Rotary Club of Louisville, Kentucky,USA, and editor of the group’s newsletter. The fellowship has since grown to 117members.

Peter Hill - Adventurer Extraordinaire

Young Peter enlightened us about the many delights of exploring Dartmoorin the south-west of England. A massive granite grassland upland covered954 square kilometres. It is a place steeped in history and archaeology andcan be a unforgiving place to find oneself when the weather changes for theworst. Although there are many landmarks, mainly being granite outcropsknown as Tors, it is not a place to venture without the proper equipment(especially a compass). Fortunately we were sitting in the comfort of theBukit Kiara Club as Peter showed us what you can discover on venturesonto the moor. There are some 200 Tors to be found, some more spectacularthan others, as well as bogs and mires. These can be dangerous you cansink down into them easily. An old story goes like this - a man was makinghis way through Aune Mire at the head of the River Avon when he came

upon a top-hat brim down on the surface of the mire. He kicked it, whereupona voice called out: "What be you a-doin' to my 'at?" The man replied, "Bethere now a chap under'n?" "Ees, I reckon," was the reply, "and a hossunder me likewise." However, as well as giving us a history lesson he showedus some delightful photos of the moor.

Peter then went on to describe the art of "Letterboxing". It originated onDartmoor in the 19th century and has become increasingly popular in recentdecades. Watertight containers, or 'letterboxes', are hidden throughout themoor, each containing a visitor's book and a rubber stamp. Visitors take animpression of the letterbox's rubber stamp as proof of finding the box andrecord their visit by stamping their own personal stamp in the letterbox'slogbook. A recent related development is geocaching. Geocache clues makeuse of GPS coordinates, whereas letterboxing clues tend to consist of grid

references and compass bearings.

Thanks Peter, we allthoroughly enjoyedyour talk.

It was with great pleasure that President Ghaurry welcomed avisiting RotarianCsiszar Mihaly who hails from the Rotary Club of Debrecen in Hungary. Hetook time out to explain something of the history of his club which was originallyformed in 1920. It has had some challenges since that tiem with the 2ndWorld War and the communist period intervening in their smooth running. Itwas only in 1980 that the club reformed (apparently there were no originalfounder members at this event) and they have been going strong ever since.

 Visiting Rotarian - Csiszar Mihaly

Did you know?

The city of Debrecen is Hungary's secondcity after Budapest with a population over200,000. It is located to the east of thecountry on the Northern Great plain. It hashad a troubled history and more than 50%of the city was destroyed during thesecond world war. However it now hasbecome a cultural icon for the area with athriving music scene including the BelaBartok International Choir Competition. Of

interest to all Malaysians will be the factthat it has a saugage named after it calledthe debrecener. A pork sausage of uniformfine texture and reddish-orange colour. Also known as "Debreziners", thesausages are heavily spiced with paprikaand other seasonings like garlic, pepperand marjoram. They are usually unsmokedor lightly smoked, and sold in pairs joinedat one end.
