The Commons & Lords and Cannock Coalition(Cannock Rugby Club and Rugeley Rugby Club) ahead

of their big game at Twickenham. The Commons & Lords rugby teams annual charity match atTwickenham Stadium raised more than 10,000 for first-time

beneficiaries, the RFU Injured Players Foundation, on Tuesday (17th

    April 2012).

A combined team from Cannock and Rugeley rugby clubs travelledsouth to the Home of England Rugby to take on the Commons &Lords RUFC, made up of MPs, Peers, parliamentary staff and guests.

Aidan Burley, MP for Cannock Chase, and scrum half for the Commons &Lords (pictured left), had organised theparliamentary teams opponents, whodubbed themselves Chase Coalitionand ran out 13-7 winners, scoring twotries to one.John Owen, Chairman of the Board ofTrustees of the RFU Injured PlayersFoundation, and RFU Past President, was present to receive the 10,900proceeds that included each Cannockand Rugeley player contributing 300for their chance to play on the hallowed

turf, a donation by the Commons &Lords and more than 600 from a post-match auction of memorabilia.

Having made a 5.30am departure to get to London for the match, theStaffordshire teams day was topped off by a visit to Downing Streetfor a photocall outside No.10 and a look inside the Cabinet Room.

The RFU Injured Players Foundation (IPF) supports people whosustain a catastrophic injury while playing rugby. The charity, whichhas more than 130 clients currently, provides help and support forplayers and their families, in the early months after the injury and inthe long term. One of the first things I did on getting elected as an MP in 2010 wasaccept an invitation to the Rugeley RUFC annual dinner, and I wassoon persuaded to play a game for their second XV,said Aidan, whowas joined in the Commons & Lords team by Lord Addington, and

MPs, Mike Penning and Stephen Mosley. It was a privilege to be asked to organise an opposition for thischarity match and I thought that my two local clubs, normally archrivals, would be perfect.Played in four quarters, the match began with a try for the ChaseCoalition by Dave Gregory, but the Commons & Lords led when MikePenning, MP for Hemel Hempstead and Parliamentary UnderSecretary of State for Transport, caught a lineout and the ball wasmoved expertly for Jug Johal to score a try converted by JamesFaiers.

A penalty goal squeezed over by Tom Impallomeni with eight minutesremaining edged the combined Cannock and Rugeley side back infront, and delighted prop Tommy Wilson celebrated a once-in-a-lifetime try at Twickenham from a rolling maul to finish the scoring.John Owen said: Fund-raising days like this are so important toenable us to care for the clients of the RFU Injured PlayersFoundation. We thank Aidan Burley MP, and all the Commons & Lords team who

play half a dozen matches a year, for returning to Twickenham for thisannual fixture. It was also a marvellous effort by Cannock and Rugeley, both to raisethe money they did and to make the journey to Twickenham, and Iwonder if perhaps we should rename them the StaffordshireBarbarians. Two teams of Year 7 schoolchildren from Fair Oak Academy andHagley Park Academy (pictured below) were part of the fun, playing acurtain-raiser match on the Twickenham pitch.

Catastrophic injury in rugby is very rare, thankfully, but it is great toknow that if the worst does happen there is an organisation like theIPF there to help.Man of the match Penning was presented with a bottle of champagneby Eliott Ray of the RFU Wine Club.

MP restates campaign for football clubs

to pay for cost of policing matches

Aidan Burley MP has this week restated his long running campaign forPremiership football clubs to pay more towards the cost of policing

football matches in the UK.Whilst clubs pay for the officers inside the stadium during matches, much of the demand for policing created by football is actually outsidethe stadium, around local pubs and on transport. Aidan believes thatthis means the police, and therefore taxpayers, are losing out to thetune of millions of pounds a year due to the consequential costs ofpolicing away from the grounds, at train stations and other publicareas.West Midlands Police alone lost out by 722,232 in the 2009/10Premier League season and with their force looking to make budgetcuts of around 123 million by 2014, Aidan believes it is unacceptable

for such lucrative businesses such as Premier League clubs to passoff the these extra police costs onto the taxpayer.Previously Aidan has called for these changes in Parliament (seehere) and now Britains most senior football policeman Assistant ChiefConstable Andy Holt is looking into the idea.

As well as being interviewed on the issue on BBC Radio WM, Aidanalso spoke with Assistant Chief Constable Holt this week to give himhis views and ideas.Commenting Aidan said, "Everyone has seen the extra police

patrolling towns and train stations on match day, and they are only

there for one reason: because it is match day. I do not see how it isfair that taxpayers are footing the bill and feel the police should beable to recuperate all their costs on match day.

I was very pleased to be able to speak with Assistant ChiefConstable Andy Holt about this and my campaign for value formoney for the taxpayer in this area goes on"

    Aidan nominates Chadsmoor restaurant

the Dilshad for 2012 Tiffin Cup

Following the success of the Tiffin Cup 2011, MPs have for the 7 th

year running, been asked to nominate a restaurant in theirconstituency to be in the running for the best South Asian restaurantin the UK.

Aidan Burley MP has chosen to nominate local favourite the Dilshadrestaurant in Chadsmoor.Last year sixty two restaurants were nominated from around thecountry and this time it is hoped to build upon the popularity of thismouth-watering competition, encouraging the participation of as manyconstituencies as possible. The competition offers the opportunity tocelebrate the diversity of British culture and recognises the

importance of South Asian cuisine. The Tiffin Cup is awarded every year by the Tiffin Club of MPs,formed in 2006 by former MP John Barrett, Michael Fabricant MP andKeith Vaz MP. The aim is not only to applaud the quality of South

Asian food in Britain but also to raise much needed money for charity. This year the competition is in aid of the charity World Vision.Mr Vaz said, After the overwhelming success of last yearscompetition we are looking forward to another chance to sample someof the best offerings of Indian food in Britain. At the same time we alsohope to encourage some healthy competition amongst MPs from all

parties, all while raising money for a worthy charity.

Aidan said, The Dilshad is a muchloved local treasure and I try to gothere as often as I can. They areinfamous for having Britains hottestcurry and a big favourite with my teamfor their hot brandy served inindividually candle-heated glasses. Iwish the restaurant owner Tony Uddinand everyone at the Dilshad the best ofluck in this competition.

    Aidan invites Cannock Chase resident

    to Rock the House

Aidan has nominated Cannock Chase resident Sandy Stanton for thesolo artist category of the Rock the House competition.Rock the House is a Parliamentary live music and venue competitionwhich celebrates the very best of up-and-coming unsigned Britishartists and the live music venues that support them. The aim of thecompetition is to raise the political profile of the importance ofintellectual property rights, and live music, among parliamentarians. The UK Music industry is hugely important in terms of employmentand overseas earnings. This must be encouraged and protection ofCopyright is essential to the ongoing ability to pay artists for the workthey create. The way the competition works is for all MPs to nominate a solo-artist,a band, an under-18s act and the best small live music venue fromtheir constituency. A panel of international music industry experts and

musicians will determine the finalists who will compete in a live battleof the bands on Wednesday 30th May 2012 with the winners in eachartist's category playing a live set on the Terrace of the House ofCommons in the evening at the finale reception and winning all thoseonce in a life time prizes!Commenting, Aidan said, It is important to help and support localtalent and I was delighted to nominate Sandy in this competition. Iwish him the best of luck to win the competition and go on to achievegreat things in the music industry for Cannock Chase. You can see Sandy Stantons entry song here.

    Politically Speaking

Aidan Burley MP, Staffordshire NewsletterApril 2012

Almost 240 years ago, BenjaminFranklin said: 'They who can giveup essential liberty to obtain a littletemporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety'. A thought as true

today as when first spoken. You could be forgiven for thinking that the issue of civil liberties is onewhere the Coalition parties are most united. That is why I wasshocked to learn of government plans to announce legislation that willrequire internet and phone companies to record who their customershave emailed, texted and called. I am pleased that in recent days theyhave backed down from this position and promised that any proposalswill be published in draft form only, for consultation. I would certainlyhave opposed the plans as initially reported.I believe that ultimately, Ministers are not to blame for those plans. Ihave a hunch that they were a repackaging of civil servantsproposals, offered initially to the last Labour government. Who canforget the days when authoritarian proposals for ID cards and 90 dayspre-charge detention were sold as measures necessary to keep thestreets safe? In the words of the Information Commissioner, the latestplans would herald a step change in the relationship between thecitizen and the state. Some say that if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear. Ifonly that were true. We have seen in recent years that innocentBritons were allowed by the previous government to be shuttledaround the world and interrogated on the back of evidence that turnedout to be false. It is also said that only this intrusive level of monitoringwill keep us safe from those who hate us. But it is not us that terroristshate - it is our views and our values. They loathe that we can hold

multiple opinions to be equally valid; that we can speak them withoutfear. We will only defeat terrorism by holding on to our values, not bysacrificing them on the altar of more state control. We are already snooped-on too much. Our phone calls and emailsare monitored by more than the police and intelligence agencies. There are now 400 councils and countless quangos snooping on us.In total, 10,000 requests for personal data are made each week.

A Governments first duty should be to protect the public. But,ultimately, it falls to Parliament to scrutinise the security case for theseproposals, preserve the privacy of the law-abiding majority, andprotect the country from yet another epic data-sharing disaster.
