Vol 19 Number 8 SELAMAT PAGI 4 September 2010 President’s Message From the Editor The Future Will Be Different As I looked out of the window of the car ( which is heading to Trang, Southern Thailand) , I cant help but sense the World will be different very soon. I noticed the gap between the rich and the poor will continue to expand. And this is not just in Thailand but in Malaysia too. The idea of a high paying job for life is becoming ridiculous as low wage countries (Malaysia is considered a high wage area now) compete globally and as companies exchange ideas across oceans at the speed of light. Jobs tend to migrate to countries with the lowest cost of labour. I believe that young entrepre- neurs equipped with low-cost PDAs and access to the internet will soon rise out of small towns like those , I saw on the way to Trang, will trans- form the world. The rich and compla- cent will find their world of luxury disturbed as young and hungry entrepreneurs change the future of the world - some from small towns. In Trang , I was welcome by President Paradon, a member of the National Economic and Social Advisory Council of Thailand. I also met several Past Presidents and members and had a lovely dinner . That evening my talk was titled ‘ Belief in Rotary’. With some 30 years as a Rotary member, I believe I can share what are my beliefs in Rotary. I chosed this title to inspire ALL Rotarians to have a strong belief in Rotary . With a strong belief , a strong club will arise and good team- work among the members will drive the club s projects. My Belief in Rotary with 8 points ( in summary) are as follows : ON THE CUSP OF A NEW MONTH Last week saw the club receive District Governor KB Lim on his official visit to our 28 August meeting. The DG’s official visit is the occasion on which he discusses Rotary issues with the club and motivates us to meet the District’s and our targets. The day before that, he met with our Interact President, Secretary, Treasurer and IU Director after which he had a session with me, our Secretary Ghaurry, Treasurer Sunny and President-Elect Steve. The most interesting point to emerge from the meeting was DG’s suggestion that we should try sponsoring another breakfast club in the district! At his official visit DG gave the club two targets: a membership of 40 for the Rotary year and an average contribution of USD100 per head to TRF. Last year RCBKS gave USD80+ per head. The good news is that PP Kong pledged his second PHF on the spot. TRF Director Jeremy has accepted the challenge even before DG’s visit. August being Rotary Membership month, it is very apt that we should have inducted Julia as our latest member last week. It was not entirely coincidental that it coincided with the District Governor’s official visit. With DG there to welcome her to the Rotary family we hope that it would be that much more memorable for Julia. This month, September, is Rotary month for New Gen. The Interact Club of SMK Sri Hartamas has always been a very important part of our club. They have always risen to the call to duty. We saw how these young citizens raised RM10,000 for the Breast Cancer Welfare Association. We witnessed a very sensible and passionate team during the meeting with the DG. It augurs well for the year ahead. More encouraging is the fact that we have met and established a good rapport with the new school principal and Interact adviser. There is every reason to be enthusiastic about our Interact programme with their support. As next week 11 Sept will be part of the Hari Raya break, I wish all Muslims Selamat Hari Raya. Also to the con- tingent going to Tibet, fair winds and bring back lots of shots to show us. President's Fellowship - 31 August 2010 Yours in Rotary President Poay Lim

LAST WEEK’S MEETINGDistrict Governor's Official Visit

• Become a Better Human Being.

Every member has to present ideas, accept views and participate in projectactivities. And in the process learn to accept and serve, later learn to leadvolunteers . After some time through trial and errors, every member learnsto harmonise the strength of members , have fun and deliver commonobjectives. Over time all Rotarians will become better Human beings .

• Redefine Success

I met some one who told me he is very successful at making money. Icongratulated him for his money making skills but said he was he was notsuccessful yet. To be successful , one has earn well and also able to givewell. Success is when a person can sustain this earning and giving yearafter year. That strikes a new meaning in life- redefining success.

• Local and global

You are a member of a local rotary club which in turn is a member ofRotary International. Your projects can be of local nature or joint activitieswith clubs in other countries. Rotary does not sleep . As the sun sets here, another Rotary club is about to go on a project in somewhere in the otherpart of the world. Every Rotarian is a local person but with internationalexposure.

• Rotary – An excellent organisation

I believe Rotary is an excellent organisation. Rotary emphasises theimportance of training so all office bearers should know their roles andexpectation. All members especially in-coming officiers such asPresidents, secretaries , treasurers , Assistant Governors and DistrictGovernors received training to help them do an excellent job . There is alsocontinuous communication between RI President and members through themagazine ‘ The Rotarian’ . All in all the whole organisation becomes anexcellent organisation with intensive training, good humanitarian initiativesand strong leadership skills. You ought to be proud , being a member of anExcellent organisation.

• Learning and growing

I believe in the intense training in all relevant aspects of Rotary help usgrow through learning. Every member will continue to receive knowledge invarious service projects, The Rotary Foundation and may even take office atclub and district level again if so desired. Rotary believes in moving with thetimes , human needs and latest technologies in training. Every club has itsown club assemblies while districts have conferences and assemblies tohelp its members link and update. This will strengthen the belief of allmembers. Rotary remains fresh and up to date in its concepts andrelevance to society.

• Peace through Rotary

The 4 way Test , the non religious and non-racial stand in the Rotarymovement helps to move dialogue among members to promote harmony inthe house . Imagine a Isreali Rotary club with Palestinians members inattendance and working together to improve the lives of the people aroundthem will certainly help to promote peace. Meetings among rotarianseverywhere help to promote trust and peace continuously . We must havemore Rotarians and Rotary clubs in every part of the world.

• Rotarians – Better, Bolder Builders

Rotarians are Builders in society. We bring education , water , healthimprovement etc everywhere. When we have a strong belief in rotary, we

can be better and bolder in our intentions to do better projects. Rotariansare leaders and light the way to a better society.

• Legacy

Finally I believe all rotarians can leave behind a good track record ofcommunity success and also a good club to the next generation ofleaders. They build the future now. Many children of Rotarians are alsobecoming members of rotary and stepping out to make a difference.Together we can build a trust worthy brand to be use by interactors, rotaractors and Rotarians.

Every rotarian should have a strong belief in rotary or they will not staylong. Over time, the members become good friends and learn to acceptthe decisions made by other rotarians.

The subject was well received in both Krabi and Trang Rotary clubsjudging the response and questions i received.

On a lighter note , I have been accepted as a member of a singing group The4 Tenors and is scheduled to perform in Klang Executive club in late October.Iwill be very busy with practices . 15 other friends, rotarians and I will bevisiting Tibet this mid september . Wish us well and a happy joyous journeyto the West.

Its Hari Raya time and We Wish Every One a Joyous Occassion and ManyHappy meetings everywhere. Kim and I wish everyone Happy Holidays andMay Your Wish come true.

Happy and Delighted Always,

Malaysia was formed on 16th September 1963, when Malaya, Sabah (thenknown as North Borneo), Sarawak and Singapore came together as a country. For the first time, in 2010, our Government has declared Malaysia Day as apublic holiday

Malaysia Day is a day for all Malaysians to celebrate our nationhood:irrespective of whether we are from East Malaysia or West Malaysia; andregardless of our ethnicity, culture, religion, social standing, or any of theother many different ways in which we (or others, for us) delineate, classifyand identify ourselves.

It is in this spirit of 1Malaysia, that we, a group of Malaysians who care deeplyfor our country, conceived the Malaysiaku – Celebrating Malaysia Day project. This country is “Malaysiaku” (My Malaysia) for all Malaysians.

Through exhibitions, talks, discussions, performances, poetry reading, art, music, books, food, and other ways, we celebrate all that is unique and beautifulabout this country.
