Twitter Basics• #Hashtags• Sharing videos• Posting Photos• Posting Links• Direct Messages• Twitter Polls• Adding Your Location to a

Tweet• Replies and @mentions

Twitter is all about brevity.

Posts are limited to 140 characters based off the idea they should be no longer than an old school text message.

Users enjoy it because it allows them to catch up with news and activity with just the need to know headlines.

#Hashtags• Putting a hashtag before a relevant keyword or phrase

makes your post searchable for people who are looking for those words or phrases on twitter• When using a key phrase, do not put spaces between

the words• Twitter recommends limiting to two hashtags per

tweet to avoid being perceived at SPAM

Page 6: Twitter

Popular Hashtags• #MondayMotivation – inspirational quotes to inspire people to

get busy on Mondays• #TBT – short for Throwback Thursday. Users post old photos of

themselves or their staff, product, etc.• #FF – short for Follow Friday. Users recommend other users to

follow• #OOTD – Outfit of the Day• #awkwarddogphotos

Current trending topics can also be leveraged to post real time responses that get extra visibility. Let’s look at an example…

Page 7: Twitter

Doritos leveraged the trending topic related to the release of the B movie Sharknado 3 to post this tweet to promote their product.

Because of their popularity, hashtags are now also given searchable functionality by Facebook and Instagram.

Sharing Videos• Maximum video length is 60

seconds• Minimum Resolution 32x32• Maximum 1920x1200• They can be imported from iPad,

iPhone, or uploaded from your computer.

Sharing Photos• Photos can be up to 5MB• Animated GIFs can be up to 3MB• GIF, PNG and JPEG formats

accepted on twitter• You can tag other twitter users in

the photo by putting in the @ symbol followed by their Twitter handle• As you can see in the example

here – incorporating your logo into the photos or graphics can make the message more clear

Page 10: Twitter

Posting Links• Direct users to your

website, content, or other social media accounts by sharing a link• Twitter will automatically

shorten the link to 23 characters to leave room for a 117 character text description• Description should give

enough information to entice user to follow your link

Page 11: Twitter

Direct Messages• Direct Messages on

Twitter can be a great way to offer customer service• Direct Messages follow

the same convention as tagging, and notify the recipient• The customer in this

example used @TurboTaxCanada to ask a question, and they responded using his @hcamry handle.

Posts get more visibility when they are posted from another platform to Twitter. In this example, an Instagram I posted of my dog Daisy with #snugglepup got 250 impressions and 2 new followers.

The video we viewed from Intuit was cross posted from YouTube.
