MFV TRANSFORMING LIVES
Karthika, suffered intensely since childhood from Juvenile Type 1 diabetes, having to take insulin shots once every
morning and evening. During senior school she developed cataracts in both eyes. This limited her vision
tremendously and she found it quite impossible to read. This hampered her studies. She acquired low marks in her
school graduation examinations. Further due to her ill health she could not continue her specialized studies in
Nursing.
Karthika lives with her parents in Utthukottai village, Tiruvallur district. Her father earns a meager income by
supplying shops various consumer items after buying them from the wholesale market. Though they were
spending a lot for her diabetes treatment and were at a loss how to treat her deteriorating eye condition, they
supported Karthika to the hilt keeping faith that one day she would overcome these difficulties.
Their prayers were answered when Sankara Nethralaya JCOC, Chennai conducted an outreach camp In
Utthukottai village at Vivekananda School. After diagnosing her cataracts she was operated upon both her eyes at
Sankara Nethralaya JCOC, Chennai. A successful operation ensured with Karthika being provided free prescription
spectacles.
The family was overjoyed by these developments. They expressed deep gratitude for MFV and the doctors
at Sankara Nethralaya JCOC, Chennai. Karthika has since started living life far more confidently and freely. She
sought admission to the Indira Gandhi Institute, Tiruvallar, to pursue a Laboratory Technician Diploma.
