MFV TRANSFORMING LIVES Karthika, suffered intensely since childhood from Juvenile Type 1 diabetes, having to take insulin shots once every morning and evening. During senior school she developed cataracts in both eyes. This limited her vision tremendously and she found it quite impossible to read. This hampered her studies. She acquired low marks in her school graduation examinations. Further due to her ill health she could not continue her specialized studies in Nursing. Karthika lives with her parents in Utthukottai village, Tiruvallur district. Her father earns a meager income by supplying shops various consumer items after buying them from the wholesale market. Though they were spending a lot for her diabetes treatment and were at a loss how to treat her deteriorating eye condition, they supported Karthika to the hilt keeping faith that one day she would overcome these difficulties. Their prayers were answered when Sankara Nethralaya JCOC, Chennai conducted an outreach camp In Utthukottai village at Vivekananda School. After diagnosing her cataracts she was operated upon both her eyes at Sankara Nethralaya JCOC, Chennai. A successful operation ensured with Karthika being provided free prescription spectacles. The family was overjoyed by these developments. They expressed deep gratitude for MFV and the doctors at Sankara Nethralaya JCOC, Chennai. Karthika has since started living life far more confidently and freely. She sought admission to the Indira Gandhi Institute, Tiruvallar, to pursue a Laboratory Technician Diploma.
