Lung cancer

• Lung cancer spreads to lymph nodes if necessary treatment was not given at perfect time.

• Lung cancer often have serious effects (http://www.slideshare.net/danielvhenny/lung-cancer-spreads-to-brain-and-its-symptoms)in the body if correct staging is not identified and treated.

• The following slide contains how lung cancer spread to lymph nodes and its effects.

Cancer spreads to lymph nodes

• Lung cancer often spreads to the lymph nodes before spreading to other regions(

• http://www.slideshare.net/danielvhenny/lung-cancer-spreads-to-liver) of the body.

• It spreads in three primary ways,

1. The lymphatic system

2. The bloodstream, or

3. Locally near the tumor.

• When lung cancer cells travel through the lymphatic system they are carried to lymph nodes where they can lodge and grow.

• Lung cancer often spreads first to lymph nodes near the tumor, known as regional lymph nodes, but may also spread to lymph nodes in distant regions.

Lung cancer spreads to regions of lymph nodes

• The lymph nodes that lung cancer spreads to first often depends upon the location of the tumor.

• Intrapulmonary lymph nodes that lie within the lungs.

• These can either be peripheral lymph nodes that is, the lymph nodes that are found in the outer regions of the lungs or hilar lymph nodes, which are present in the region of the chest where the bronchi and major arteries and veins enter the lungs

• Mediastinal lymph nodes are present in the area of the chest between the lungs.

• Extra thoracic lymph nodes Refers to lymph nodes found outside of the thorax (chest).

• These include supraclavicular lymph nodes, located in the area just above the collar bone; and scalene lymph nodes, which are in the neck, near the uppermost rib.

Lymph nodes on other side of the body

• Ipsilateral lymph nodes refers to lymph nodes on the same side of the body as the tumor.

• Contralateral lymph nodes refers on the other side of the chest from the tumor.

Symptoms of lung cancer on lymph nodes

• Swelling in the neck .

• Pain the above collar bone.

• Shortness of breath due to pressure from swollen lymph nodes.

• Hoarseness due to pressure on nerves caused by swollen (http://lungcancersymptomsx.com/)lymph nodes.

Lymph node test

• The following test were taken to test whether the tumor has spread to lymph nodes.

• CT scan or MRI of your chest and abdomen

• Pet scan – Particularly to test non-small cell lung cancer.

• Endobronchial ultra sound.

• Mediastinoscopy.

• Lymph node biopsy.
