STARTER...There are 3 functions of the Circulatory system:

1.________ transports oxygen, nutrients and water and removes __________ ___________.

2. Regulates body _____________ as the blood absorbs body _________ and carries it to the lungs and skin where it is released.

3. Protection is provided when _____________ that fight ____________ are carried in the blood. Blood can ________ to seal cuts and wounds.

Use these key words to help you.Antibodies Blood Oxygen WaterHeat Carbon dioxide TemperatureInfection Clot

WALT

• Describe the structure and function of the Cardiovascular System (P5)

• Explain how the cardiovascular system supplies the body with oxygen (M3)

Describe the three functions of the Cardiovascular System

1. Blood transports oxygen, nutrients and water and removes carbon dioxide.

2. Regulates body temperature as the blood absorbs body heat and carries it to the lungs and skin where it is released.

3. Protection is provided when antibodies that fight disease are carried in the blood. Blood can clot to seal cuts and wounds.

Some questions...1.What 3 components make up the CV system?2.There are 4 chambers of the heart, can you

name them?3.What does the aorta do?

Page 6: Cardiovascular System

Made up of 3 components:1.Heart – this is the pump.2.Blood Vessels – routes that blood travels

along.3.Blood – fluid that carries substances around

the body.

Briefly describe each component in your assignment. What does each component do within the CV system?

Structure of the HEART

You need a labelled diagram of the heart.

Page 9: Cardiovascular System

Structure of the HEART

The heart is made up of 4 chambers:The top 2 chambers = AtriaThe bottom 2 chambers = VentriclesThe cambers are assigned to the left or right.

RIGHT ATRIUM LEFT ATRIUM

RIGHT VENTRICLE LEFT VENTRICLE

For assignment – this is how the CV system supplies the body with O2 (M3)

TALK TO YOUR PARTNER... Explain how blood flows around the Cardiovascular System.

Page 12: Cardiovascular System

Blood Flow• Aorta- to the rest of the body.

• Muscle use oxygen

• Deoxygenated blood flows through the vena cava

• Pumped through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle • Pumped through the semi lunar valve up to the lungs through the

pulmonary artery • Oxygenated blood from the lungs enters through the pulmonary

vein in to the left atrium

• Pumped through the bicuspid valve in to the left ventricle

• Pumped to the rest of the body by the aorta

Page 13: Cardiovascular System

Double PumpPulmonary circuit

• The right side

• This carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs to be oxygenated.

• The oxygenated blood

then returns to the heart.

Systemic circuit• The left side of the

heart.

• Carries oxygenated blood around the body in the arteries.

• Carries deoxygenated blood back to the heart along the veins.
