ALTERNATIVES
Quest For HealthWeight loss is a
common and constant
goal among many. At
the start of the new
year, especially,
individuals try their
best to get fit and
begin living a more
wholesome lifestyle.
Changing WaysA major focus for this
goal is to modify eating
habits. The method for
doing so varies, and
could be either
adhering to a specific
diet or deciding not eat
certain foods.
Liquid Calories
For those making that
lifestyle change, drinks
can be the enemy to
progress. While tasty,
wine and spirits contain
a great deal of calories
from alcoholic content
and added sugars.
Cocktail ProblemCocktails are the biggest
culprit, in that regard.
With heavy syrups,
sodas, egg whites, and a
variety of other additions,
cocktail mixers add up,
and can be equivalent to
having a cheeseburger
or a couple of donuts.
Solution
Fortunately, there are
alternatives that
provide a chance to
make effective
changes without
sacrificing a good
time.
1. Keep It CleanStick to the basics. Order
your vodka, gin, or
whiskey on the rocks. Just
1.5 oz., or a standard
serving, should clock in
closer to 100 calories.
Sipping is suggested to
monitor intake.
Try a little lime, lemon or
orange for flavor.
2. Stay DryWine is great, but America's
favorite, Chardonnay, is high
in alcoholic content and
contains, on average, 135
calories. Opt for champagne
instead. Preferably a Brut
Nature"which contains no
added sugars, and fewer
calories than most other
options.
3. Make It LightBeer is the most widely
consumed beverage in
the world. So it's likely a
first choice for many, but
it's heavy on calories and
typically takes a lot more
to get the same effect.
Choose a light brew, with
less alcohol by volume.
4. Go Alcohol-lessOk, so you won't get the
effect of alcohol, but it will
give you something to
put in your hand. And,
many of them are pretty
tasty. Stick to ones with
more natural ingredients
to ensure that the trade
off isn't in vain.
5. Stick to the Basics
If you absolutely must
have a cocktail, go for
something a little more
forgiving like an Old
Fashioned or a Mojito.
Chocolate martinis, Pina
Coladas, and the like
should be avoided.
Most Importantly
Of course the healthiest
option is negate adult
beverages and sugary
drinks entirely, and that
is an option. Otherwise,
moderation is key, even
with lower cal choices.
