Page 12: Calorie Walks

Is a 200 calorie walk worth itwhen the energy could bereplaced by one cream cake? But imagine you added fivewalks each week to your normalactivity. That is 1000 calories aweek or 52,000 calories a yearwhich means nearly 15 lbs. ofbody fat. It all adds up!

Isn’t walking too easy? Shouldn’t I join a gym andexercise hard to get fit? Itdepends on how fit you want toget! If you want to get fit forsport then yes you do need towork hard. But the major healthbenefits of exercise can comewith relatively mild exercise aslong as you do it regularly anddo enough.

My legs are short. Will I burnmore calories because I takemore steps? Unfortunately not!You might take more steps buteach step is shorter and needsless energy than the longersteps of a taller person. It allpretty much balances out andleg length makes only a tiny

difference to the energy requiredto walk.

How much exercise do I need? The latest scientific evidenceshows that health benefits willbegin if you accumulate at least2,000 calories worth of exercisea week, or do 30 minutes ofsomething active at least fivetimes a week.

Will I burn more calories if I walkfast? No. It is the distance thatmatters not the time. If you walkfaster you will burn calories at afaster rate but you won’t bewalking for as many minutes.

Happy walking!
