Petition. There is general agreement amongst theshopkeepers and businesses on theCrescent West shopping parade thatparking in front of the shops couldbe improved for the benefit of everybody. At the moment parking is permittedbetween 0930 and 1630.

This stops many commuters but allowsa significant number to leave their carsthere most of the day blocking potentialcustomers from visiting the shops.

An application to the Council is plannedwith the proposal that there shouldbe free parking for an hour and thereafteran hourly charge up to a maximum ofthree hours.

The Council may have other sugges-tions but the issue badly needs somethought and discussion. We have beenadvised that support in the shape of apetition would send a strong message. Please sign. Sheets are placed in all theshops on the Parade.Rod Armstrong

St Mary’s Church Clock. The photo (right) shows a steeplejackmending the Monken Hadley churchclock. The clock is very old, early 1800s.It needs to be wound up once a weekwhich is a heavy job and takes a verystrong person or two weak ones! This isdone by the ringers on the ringers'practice night. Later this year the strikewill be repaired and so the clock will ringout the hours once again. We will alsohave automatic winding installed whichwill be paid for by a legacy left by our latebell ringing captain, Richard Tayler. The

automatic winding mechanism will notinterfere with the integrity of the ancientclock. It is merely a motor to lift theweights. This brings me to the issue ofBELL RINGING!

Bell ringing is ‘Not Just Pulling on anOld Rope!’ You may hear the bells onSunday morning if you live near toMonken Hadley Church. We are lucky aswe are supported by and rely on thegood offices of the Barnet ringers. Theyswell our numbers on Sunday morningsotherwise the bells would be silent. Butwe badly need volunteers to come andlearn and be part of our own MonkenHadley band to ring and help us on

Sunday mornings and other occasions. You don’t have to be a church member.

We are asking you to consider comingand having a go! We practise on Tuesdayevenings from 7.45 until 9.15 each weekand our main Sunday ringing is in themorning from 10.00 until 10.30. We havelots of fun with many social events, parties and outings.

Only average strength and health areneeded. Our bells are considered to befairly light and a child from the age of 12or 13 years would be able to learn to ringthe lighter ones quite easily.

It’s more about technique thanstrength. Very heavy bells at cathedrals

The Hadley WoodSecurity Scheme. 11years on.It is with great pride that we celebrateELEVEN years since the introduction ofthe Hadley Wood Security Scheme. Many

residents will remember the dark daysprior to its introduction when HadleyWood was regularly targeted by thecriminal fraternity with as many as eightaggravated burglaries reported in the 3months prior to the commencement ofthe Scheme.

Amazingly, we are still the only schemethat I am aware of in London thatprovides mobile patrols with 24/7 cover,365 days per year – and we are definitelythe cheapest! But that doesn't mean weprovide an inferior service, far from it.We can keep the prices low because ofthe enormous support we enjoy from thewhole community and we could be evencheaper if everyone was a member! Butthis scheme hasn't become the mostsuccessful scheme in the UK by luck, it'sthanks to so many residents who gavetheir time as well as their money to helpset this up, the ongoing support of theHadley Wood Association (whom youshould also be members of by the way!)and the support of the local Police withwhom we continue to enjoy a closerelationship.

The security scheme has also beenconsiderably enhanced as we becomemore sophisticated in our crime detectionmethods and understand the needs of

the community. For example, our securityofficers are all trained First Responderscarrying basic first aid equipment and firefighting equipment. With GPS, we cannow track the vehicle and can be alertedremotely to an emergency. But the mostimportant resource is our guards and theknowledge vested in them. John isthe most senior officer and has justcompleted his tenth year in Hadley Woodand Jengis is close behind with morethan eight years service. Even 'new boy'Hassan is in his fourth year!

The knowledge these guys have aboutour community and what goes on shouldnot be underestimated and we are all

Hadley Wood Golf ClubTriumphsThe inaugural Inter Club Golf Competitionrun by the Society of Herts Golf Captainswas held at Hadley Wood on Thursday18th April in what can best be describedas a blustery day! The wind howled andfor the first hour of the Shotgun start therain lashed down.

In all 23 teamscompeted – each teamconsisting of Captain, Vice-Captain, Manager andSociety Liaison Officer. In ourcase this was Mike Edwards,Rob Anderson, DavidJackson and Don Bailey. points between them! All the teams wereimpressed with the course preparation, organisation, reception, hospitality andexcellent food at both the snack lunchand evening dinner. Well done to allconcerned.Don Bailey

young readers agedbetween ten and fifteenyears old in mind. Dianetells us that the storiesblend history, time-travel,fantasy, first romance andmythology around theadventures of eachbook’s young protagonistand promises that onceyou have read her booksyou will never again thinkof the Greek myth ofNarcissus and Echo in thesame way!

However she emphasises that it’s the true-to-life human girlsof the titles, thirteen year old Emily and fourteen year oldRosalie, who are the heroines of her books and that thechallenge in writing the second book was how to remain faithfulto the format of Emily’s Story, while coming up with acompletely new story that would never-the-less link into the first.

Readers, both young and not so young, have told her thatRosalie’s Story is a real page turner and the characters jumpfrom them as they are turned, so she guesses that she musthave got it about right!

Since the publication of the first book, apart from writingRosalie’s Story Diane has made personal appearances inN.London and Barnet schools, including local schools StMartha’s on Hadley Common; JCOSS on the edge of HadleyWoods and The Q.E Girls in Barnet.

A third book which will complete the trilogy is planned for nextyear.Press Release.
