EditorialSpring came along, lambsappeared in the fieldsbeside Waggon road andApril came to an agreeable

conclusion with the Royal Wedding.Hadley Wood’s residents watched it athome, at friends or managed to get to theMall. Hadley Highstone had a great partyat the Memorial Hall. Meanwhile theFriends of Hadley Common started anappeal to renovate the historic white gatesat the top of Hadley Road and TheCrescent. Charitable works by residentscontinued with the local RNLI supportgroup putting on a superb Fashion Showand Bill Morris writing in this issue abouthis fundraising Ben Nevis climb on behalfof Help for Heroes. Road works continuedto cause tempers to fray. Skanska’stemporary traffic lights helped, thoughsadly ignored by a few. The Playgroundcommittee continued to work on thewelcome possibility of an improvedplayground. Police Sergeant DavidWalker retired having successfully leadour Safe Neighbourhood team for someyears and Sergeant Peter Moxham tookover. Finally to everyone’s dismay themuch loved Head teacher at the HadleyWood Primary school Mrs Louiza Loizidesannounced her intention to retire.

Hadley’s white gates.Residents will know that the historicGrade 2 listed white gates at the top ofHadley Road and at the end of TheCrescent have been in a poor conditionfor some time. They are now to be rebuilt. These are the last two of the five oak

gates marking the entrances to MonkenHadley Common to be renovated. Thegates will be repaired by Barnes joinery alocal firm. Barnet Council are improvingthe road access near the gates to avoidfurther damage. With professional feesand VAT the repairs will cost £73000. Fiftypercent of this sum will be borne byEnglish Heritage and The Friends ofHadley Common are appealing for helpwith the remainder. It is noteworthy thatTheresa Villiers Conservative MP forChipping Barnet recently toured theCommon following the approval of a newfive year plan to conserve andimprove the grounds. She hasalways been a strong supporterof this historic area andcomplimented the Friends ‘fordoing an outstanding job oflooking after the Common andensuring that an importantfeature of our local history ispreserved for residents andfuture generations to enjoy’.Interesting details of her tour areon her website.

Donations to renovate thegates have already been

received by the Friends but there isstill a shortfall. For those of youwishing to help with this localrestoration project please senddonations to Chris Feldman, HonTreasurer, Friends of HadleyCommon, 66 Hadley Road, NewBarnet, Herts EN5 5QS by chequemade payable to ‘Friends of HadleyCommon’. As usual a Gift Aiddeclaration will increase the value ofthe gift.

Hadley Highstone’sstreet partyWell actually the A1000 does not reallylend itself to parties. Instead it wasdecided to hold the celebration in theMemorial Hall where Lin Castang and herorganising team (Christine and DerekSagar, Ian and Evelyn Butcher, JanetFriend, Angela Ratcliffe and ColetteBrideson) got the project underway. Ben Hillson and BillFoster set up the projection and screen(4 metres by 3), Jan Hulme knitted thewedding cake toppers (whatever theyare) and help with the cost was providedby the Hadley Residents Association andthe Memorial Hall ManagementCommittee. Watching the wedding on thebig screen the party goers had a

delicious lunch, belted out ‘Katy Katy giveme your answer do’, played games, hada Royal quiz, drank a glass ofChampagne for the loyal toast and sangthe National Anthem. It was a great dayfor all. Finally the magnificent weddingcakes were cut by the oldest (JoanHolmes) and youngest (Charles Wood)participants and commemorative mugswere given to all the children.

Well done Hadley Highstone.

coffee morning at the hall during May withthe sale of antiques, plants and jewelleryetc. as usual in aid of the R.N.L.I.

It is worth mentioning that these Hadleywomen raise about £3000 a year for theRNLI and have been doing so for manyyears. They deserve our congratulationsand respect. With groups like theseoperating all over the country those inperil on the sea look like being a greatdeal safer.

New Cops on the block.Had to go to the Police station today.Taken into a small room. Interviewed byfour police officers. Well actually I wasthere to meet the new Police Sergeantwho has taken over from Dave Walker.Sergeant Peter Moxham. Reassuringlylarge, Peter Moxham was born in Enfieldand has been in the police force fortwenty years. More recently he wasworking with and subsequently trainingthe section responsible for Public order. He now runs our Safe Neighbourhoodteam which patrols the Cockfosters ward. That includes us. Hadley Wood. You lot.

Their off street responsibilities includeregularly attending a public liaison group

which includes representatives ofthe Council, local schools, businessesand members of the public. It is fromthis group that the Police team get toknow about the public’s perception ofcrime issues in the area. Our localrepresentative on this committee is MrsSimone Strauss (who can be contactedvia the Hadley Wood Association).

Sergeant Moxham’s team includesfrom left to right in the photo PCSO SteveDouglas, Constable Michael Bradley(who comes from a background ofaviation security and counter terrorism),PCSO Kelvin Jones and Police SergeantPeter Moxham.

At regular intervals this team decide ontheir main prevention targets. At themoment these are ATM crime (commonin Cockfosters), sexual offences (usuallyexposure episodes around the localschools) and drug busts. But they alsorespond to any form of local crime fromtraffic violations, antisocial behaviour andprostitution to burglary.

I asked Sergeant Moxham about hisplans, ‘First of all’ he said ‘ I want to paytribute to my predecessor Dave Walkerwho set up the team and did such a greatjob looking after this area. We arecontinuing with the same strategy. Wewant to be seen as your local coppers. Onour bikes. On your streets. So pleasecome and talk to us if you are worriedabout any crime issues’. He went on to

To the Highlands forHeroesIn the fading days of summer last year Ifound myself unconsciously led into a

contemplation of my life to date. Whetherthis minor epiphany was prompted bythe fear of entering the 50th year of mylife, or whether it was a result of anunfortunate combination of food, I amreally not sure. What I was certain ofhowever, was that I wanted to achieve apersonal goal that would make a positivedifference to someone. A task that wouldpush me to the limit of my endurance, both physically and mentally, whilstraising an appreciable sum of money fora deserving charity.

I come from a military family and froman early age I was immersed in servicelife. My Great Grandfather fought in theZulu campaign, going to the relief ofRorkes Drift. My father Alan and hisbrothers saw action in all three services, serving their country in the SecondWorld War and my father in law and hisbrother also served during the sameconflict. My wife Katie’s Great Unclewas a chaplain in the trenches of thewestern front during the First World War,witnessing the most terrible carnage andsuffering, his ministry is documented ina very moving autobiography and hisfield communion set, used at the front istreasured by our family. This affinity forthe services and close bond has grownover the years and although choosing acareer in Television over one in the RoyalMarines (a story for another occasion!) Ihave always supported charities that inturn have helped service personnel andtheir families.

The Lord moves in mysterious ways, and I did not have to wait long for anopportunity to fulfil both my desire for anadventure and the opportunity to supportat the same time. Riggers are the infantryof my industry; they drive our OutsideBroadcast Vehicles and lay the manyhundreds of Kilometres of cable thatevery television production requires. Thejob requires both strength and discipline,

qualities that are invariably found inmembers of the armed forces. It is nosurprise therefore that the majority of ourriggers are ex service NCO’s. Oneevening after a particularly tough day onone of my locations two of this hardybreed were discussing ‘Help for Heroes’and how without this charity, with little orno government support our injuredservice personnel would be left high anddry. As the evening drew on they decidedto put a team together to walk 106 milesfrom Glasgow to the summit of Ben Nevisin winter!

The next day these two ex-Sergeantscalled me and asked me to come on

board to help with the fundraising and bythe way, ‘there is a place free on the teamif you’re interested?’

Three months later and two stonelighter, 15 of us met at the start point inGlasgow on November 28th the coldestday recorded in the region since 1962,The weather forecast had beendeteriorating every day leading up to ourstart time. Our fears had now beenconfirmed with exceptionally heavy snowand unusually low temperatures forecastfor the duration of our scheduled oneweek trek. By midday we were trudgingthrough two foot drifts in 60mph blizzardconditions. By 15:00 we were 2 hoursbehind schedule and approaching thesummit of Conic Hill. It was minus10degrees centigrade a complete blizzardwhiteout and I was in the lead navigating!Pushing through thigh deep snow with

observatory and beyond the summitcairn on its ice clad plinth. Photos werebrief, we had very limited daylight and notime to explore. The wind chill was brutaland the driving snow was pricking ourskin like needles.

Only one other team of three climbershad ventured onto the mountain that day, about an hour behind our team. Havingdescended to our hostel in Glen Nevis bythe light of our head torches, we watchedas an RAF search and rescue Helicopterlifted these three climbers off themountainside, a salient reminder thatmountains must always be respected!

Needless to say, celebrations ran lateinto the night, but the most importanttoast was from all of us to all of you for

boulder path which in summer is I amsure a lovely babbling burn, howeverwith the lowest temperatures since the1970’s the path was sheet ice with a thincovering of powder snow….lethal andexhausting. We then climbed 2000 feet, trudging through two foot deep driftingsnow in complete white out conditions. The final 1500ft was only completed dueto one of our team member’s ability tonavigate using compass bearings only. There were no discernable features inthe almost vertical snowfield and thebitter wind and driving snow obliteratedour tracks within a matter of minutes. We half walked and half crawled up thesummit plateau from cairn to cairn. Thesnow was very deep and by this time thetemperature had fallen to minus 20c.Suddenly there was a break in the cloudand we glimpsed the ruins of the old

visibility less than 5m, It occurred veryquickly to me that with only 30 minutes ofdaylight remaining we were in deeptrouble and it was only day one. For amoment there was a break in the cloudand through the blizzard I saw the line ofcrew stretched out behind me, At the rearI could just make out Sergeant Kerr. Hewas striding with purpose and seeminglyimpossible speed through the drifts. Hecovered the half a mile to my position inless than 10 minutes shouting somethinginaudible and certainly unrepeatable ateach team member as he passed them.On reaching me at the front he offeredsome technical advice; ‘’stop *******about and hurry up!’’

We were safely at camp within the hour. The rest of the week was a battle

against the elements; Scotland hadclosed down, locked into frozenparalysis by the worst weather for thirtyyears. No traffic on the roads, no peopleout of doors, just deep snow, howlingwinds and biting bitter cold. Our walkingschedules were out of the window, daysthat were to take 8 hours were taking 12.We had some casualties, mostly kneesand feet, but by 13:00 on Sunday 6thDecember ten of us had made it to theSummit of Ben Nevis. The Ascent hadbeen treacherous, exhausting and atone point frightening. We were carryingthe heaviest packs of the walk so farhaving added ice axes, crampons andsurvival kit to our standard loads. Theinitial climb was over two miles of

Crescent East is becoming a car parkwith cars parked on both sides of theroad. Crescent West is nearly as bad asis the first 150 yds of Lancaster Avenue

I realise this is due mainly tocommuters from outside the area whopark there from early morning until atleast 6pm. I also realise that if this were ametered area it would stop the all dayparking which in turn could mean HadleyWood station being adversely affected.

My concern is that there could well bean accident particularly caused by thespeed and thoughtlessness of drivers.Particularly drivers of 4 x 4’s (whoincidentally should realise they don’t ownthe roads around Hadley Wood) whoshould be more considerate of other roadusers and pedestrians. Specifically by nothogging the centre of the road travellingat great speed very often on thetelephone and expecting everyone elseto get out of their way!!! (I must notcomplain too much about 4 x 4’s as myson has one but he lives in Wandsworth). However I believe and hope he is moreconsiderate. I have two possiblesolutions,

Dear EditorFurther to the letter from Sandra O’Brart (March issue. Hadley Wood andflooding)), I have recently had a similar experience trying to obtain a quote forBuilding and Contents insurance from Marks and Spencer’s Money. Despite thefact that I have previously been insured with them, they refused to quote because, they claimed, Hadley Wood was in an area of high subsidence. This was statedon the website. I telephoned to point out it was a ludicrous mistake, but theymaintained their stance and refused a quotation. Very puzzling!Yours sincerelyChristine M. Nickson (Mrs)

John Leatherdale our local expert is heavily involved in discussions with otherexperts regarding whether or not Hadley Wood is on a flood plain. He will bereporting on his findings in next months issue.Ed.

It is the time of year to sort out the lawn. Now the ground has warmed up, you canattack moss using either lawn sand or a good multipurpose weed and feedfertiliser. Do not forget to water in if there has been no rain for three days. Whenthe moss has blackened you can either power scarify or rake the lawn with a goodspring tine rake to remove dead moss and thatch. If weather permits, it is also agood time to reseed the bare patches of lawn caused by moss or wear and tear..Remember to apply a good soil base for seed and turf to give the roots the bestpossible chance for germination and growth. It is a good time to trim and shapeyour alpines. To stop them spreading too far, remove weeds and top up withgravel mulch ie horticultural grit. 1, Ask the council to make CrescentEast and Crescent West a 20 mph area. Ipersonally don’t think it will do any goodas people in the area seldom take noticeof speed limits eg Camlet Way andBeech Hill.

2. Suggest to the Council that theymake Crescent West and Crescent Eastone way with the entry at Crescent Westand the exit at Crescent East,( I realisethat this may cause our Editor a problemwhen he visits the Golf Club but I am surein the cause of safety he will not object toadding a minute or two to his journey)

I am sure your readers may disagreewith me but they may offer alternativeideas and comments.
