Get on your bikes?Where?
Given the encouragement by theGovernment, the Times newspapers,Boris Johnson, the London CyclingCampaign and the Department ofTransport. Given our current success inthe field of road cycling,Tour de France and theOlympic Games. Given thefact that cycling is apopular pursuit, cheap andgood for us, how is it that itis so difficult to actually finda suitably safe place to doit? Take out the kids for aSunday cycle trip locally? You must be joking.
Well here is a a proposal.Let’s call it the WrothamTriangle. Starting fromBarnet, Hadley Wood or
Potters Bar the proposed circuit is madeup of Dancers Hill Road, Kitts End Roadand the A1000. It’s a triangle enclosingWrotham Park. It could be approachedfrom Potters Bar via two starting points.Dugdale Hill Lane (off Mutton Lane) pastthe school, down Sawyers Lane, underthe M25 and then sharp left up the lovelyBentley Heath Lane to Dancers Hill Road.Or from Potters Bar High St at the carpark opposite Travis Perkins. Then alongthe right (western) side of the A1000where there is plenty of space for acombined cycle and pedestrian path, asfar as Dancers Hill Road and the Duke ofYork pub. Starting from Barnet perhapsfrom Hadley Highstone there is already apath/pavement all the way along theeastern edge of the A1000 just askingto be upgraded to a combinedcycle/pedestrian route as far as WagonRoad. Here you would turn left alongwhat is possibly the shortest cycle pathin the world leading to Dancers Hill Roadand onto the Wrotham Triangle.
From Hadley Wood you could push
Peter Blackmore.A Pilot officer inBomber Command.

your bike up the path running alongsidethe railway to Wagon Road (already amarked national cycling route. No.12) asfar as the A1000 and then to Dancers Hill.Once on Dancers Hill Road you are onthe Triangle. There is a good wide pathalong Dancers Hill road’s southern edgeas far as the Wrotham Park gate(opposite the entry to Bentley HeathLane) though thereafter it does get a bitnarrow. Turning left into Kitts End Roadthere is no footpath at all but plenty ofspace for a pedestrian/cyclewayalongside its western edge. Thosewishing to try a longer route couldcontinue past the entry to Kitts End Roadand turn right after about 100 metres intoDancers Lane. This is the Great NorthWay cycle route which heads to WelhamGreen and beyond. There are problems.Kitts End Road is a race track for cars buttraffic calming measures could easily beintroduced. Waggon Road is a bit tightand has a dangerous corner just past therailway cottages. There are ditchesbetween some of the paths and theadjoining properties. It would beexpensive and is nearly all in Hertsmerethough Barnet Council and EnfieldCouncil might chip in given the potentialhealth benefits to their residents. But whatan asset it would be.
How about it Hertsmere?Rod Armstrong
Flexibility and Choice atHadley Wood Golf ClubThere was a time when those looking tojoin a golf club had few choices in thetype of membership categories available.Golf Clubs generally adopted a “one sizefits all” approach to membership, onlyoffering full or 5-day membership, andthen only to established golfers.
But the needs of golfers have changed.Golfers today are looking formemberships that fit in with their busylifestyles, whilst helping them learn andprogress. This particularly applies tothose with family constraints whichpreclude them from playing as much asthey would like.
To help encourage both new andoccasional golfers, Hadley Wood GolfClub has introduced two new categoriesof membership.Associate Membership. For a
subscription of just £750 per annum,Associate Members are entitled to play amaximum of 20 rounds per year; and canpurchase a further 6 rounds on paymentof 50% of the visitor green fee. TheAssociate Member is entitled to aCONGU handicap which means they canenter competitions at Hadley Wood andother golfing venues, and have full use ofthe Clubhouse and its excellent practicefacilities.
Alistair Cook, General Manager ofHadley Wood Golf Club said “OurAssociate Membership is a fantastic entrylevel category for the keen golfer whosimply doesn’t have the time to justify afull membership, but wants to maintaintheir handicap and work on their golf”.Academy Membership. This
category is designed for the new golfer,or those returning to the game. AcademyMembers join for an initial 4 months, andcan enjoy weekly group tuition with PGAinstructors. Members have full accessto the Clubhouse and practice facilities. This membership category costs just£260 for 4 months, payable monthly infour monthly instalments of £65.
“Joining a golf club as a new or returninggolfer can be a daunting experience; it’sa complex game with rules and etiquetteto learn. Our Academy Membershipis designed to bridge that gap – to helpnew and returning golfers build the skillsand confidence they need to take theirgames to the next level” commentedPaul Foster, Hadley Wood Golf Club PGAProfessional.
For further information about either ofthese membership categories, pleasecontact Alistair Cook, General Manageron 0208 449 4328 [email protected] Dainton

This year marks the 100th anniversary ofthe death of William Booth, founder ofthe Salvation Army. From 1903 until he‘laid down his sword’ on August 20th1912 he lived at Rookstone in LancasterAvenue, Hadley Wood. A blue plaquecommemorates his stay here. Refusedburial by the Dean at Westminster Abbeyhis body lay in state for three days atClapton Congress Hall where some150,000 people filed past his casket. Atthe subsequent funeral service inOlympia 40,000 mourners attendedincluding, some say, an incognito QueenAlexandria. Finally he was buried nextto his wife Catherine in the non-denominational Abney Park cemetery inStoke Newington. The King and Queenand many other Heads of State includingthe American President William Taft sentwreaths and messages of condolence.
William Booth was born in Nottinghamin 1829. His family were not particularlypoor but were prone to financial ups anddowns. He was educated at StBiddulph’s school during a period offamily solvency but was withdrawn towork as an apprentice in a pawnbroker’sshop when the family’s fortunes declined.Influenced by Wesleyan preachers andan innate belief that he had been calledupon to serve the Lord, William Boothbegan a life dedicated to save sinners. He started by preaching in the poorerparts of Nottingham. Then, disengaginghimself from his Methodist upbringingand publicly criticizing the establishedChurch for its lack of interest in the poorhe turned his attentions to the destitute.
In 1855 he married Catherine Mumforda young woman with a passion for socialjustice, a feminist and scholar whosesupport for her husband as well as herencouragement and drive lead to theformation of the Salvation Army. Startingin the East End of London they engagedin practical ways with both the deservingand the undeserving poor, slowly raisingan army of supporters. Though oftenderided by the Establishment, sometimeshated and often physically attacked byangry mobs the ‘Sallies’with their ranks ofyoung women and men created a globalorganisation for good. Workplaces for thevery poor, hostels, soup kitchens andshelters for unmarried mothers sprang upthroughout the world. Today theorganisation is established in eightycountries with 16000 evangelical centresand operates more than three thousandsocial welfare institutions, hospitals, schools, orphanages, homeless sheltersand social service agencies.Rod ArmstrongRef.: Blood and Fire by Roy Hattersley.Abacus books 1999William Booth. As many of our readers will know, the Hadley Green garagehas had a change of ownership. The business was openedby Harry Green who having somehow survived activeservice in the First World War, started repairing motor cyclesbehind what was the Windmill pub (later the Loch Fynerestaurant and now a private house). His father was thelicensee at the Windmill. The business prospered and Harrybegan selling Humbers and Sunbeams there until WorldWar Two intervened. At this point the Government took overthe garage for the manufacture of Spitfire parts. DouglasGreen was born in the flat over the garage and eventuallytook over the business. He moved first to HadleyHighstone and then with a showroom on the High Street

Maggie Govender.Diamond JubileeWoman of Achievement
One of the benefits of being an Editor isthat you meet some great people. So it wasthat last week I arrived at the front door ofMaggie Govender’s house in Wagon Road.Maggie came to England with her husbandGeorge from South Africa in 1970. This wasat the height of the Apartheid era. Maggie’sfather was politically active and wasimprisoned as a member of NelsonMandela’s group. For the family this wastime to leave the country. Once in the UKthey opened a newsagent’s shop inTottenham (George had always been aSpur’s fan). One day when the delivery boydid not turn up for work Maggie decided todeliver the papers herself and found to hersurprise that she loved jogging andrunning. Their shop was often visited bysportsmen from the Haringey Athletics clubtraining with Sebastian Coe at the NewRiver Sports centre. Maggie’s running stylewas noticed and she was invited to join theHaringey club. First a jogger then adevoted marathon runner, Maggie startedwith a 5km Mum’s run in Regent’s Parkand, to her amazement, won. The prize, arecipe book, was presented by EamonnAndrews. Over the subsequent years sheran in no less than ten marathons. Sevenin London, one in Australia, one in the USAand one in Finland. Her best time was 3.09hours. By 1991 she was starting marathonswith the elite group often running with LizMcColgan. By the time she was 45 yearsold she was running for GB in VeteransWorld Championships in South Africa,Australia and the USA culminating inwinning the team gold in Finland. Sheloved running, had joined Barnet Runningclub under the leadership of Derek Woodand worked hard at her fitness and diet.Eventually she started teaching at Enfield
Council’s fitness classes includingsessions for the blind and disabled. Shequalified as a Ladies Coach under thesupervision of Bruce Longden, a greatteacher who was Sally Gunnell’s coach.Whilst all this was going on she andGeorge raised a family, her daughterTrusha becoming a solicitor and son Ravia manager and supervisor at Trailfinders.Family life was always very important. When her mother showed signs ofdeveloping Alzheimers, Maggie and herfamily looked after her at home for manyyears until eventually her condition mademanagement in a nursing home essential.During this time Maggie continued to runand work as an Athletics coach. She wasRunner up for Coach of the Year at Barnetand later was voted Coach of the Year byEnfield Council. Raising money forAlzheimer sufferers became the focus ofher charitable work but she continuedworking for Enfield Council as a coach andfitness expert.
Currently she leads walks for the over50’s at Trent Park, Broomfield Park andEnfield town park. These are much
enjoyed and very popular. She also doeschairbound sessions for the disabled orblind. One of her students is aged 100years and catches two buses to get to hersessions!
On the 20th of July she was awarded aDiamond Jubilee Woman of Achievementaward by David Burrows MP. He thankedher ‘for the considerable work you havedone encouraging health and fitness withinour local community, for your tirelessdedication and commitment to helpingothers, and in particular your work with thedisadvantaged, including blind andpartially sighted people and stroke victims’.
I will not mention Maggie’s age thoughshe made no secret of it. I am absolutelyand truthfully not exaggerating when I tellyou she looks 20 years younger than sheshould. If this is what running and a gooddiet does for you we should all be followingher example. Now where did I put thattracksuit?Rod Armstrong

Dear EditorCar Jacking in Sainsburys New Barnet
The victim was at the recycling bins unloading, when someone jumped into
the car and drove off with her handbag and belongings.
The car had a push button start, and the fob needed to start was in close
proximity, ie in the handbag on the car seat, thus allowing the car to be started
and driven off. Please therefore be aware. Do not leave keys in the car when loading and
unloading, and especially in petrol stations etc . Also don’t leave key fobs for
push button start cars in the car when unattended and don’t leave handbags
on seats when loading or unloading shopping.
Simone Strauss.
