Teamwork JDC West Godparent

During my time at as a Godparent on the 2014 Sauder JDC West team, I was fortunate enough to have worked alongside two great leaders, who I called my Captains.  

Both individuals were very unique, so their different leadership styles caused conflict and they often fought with one another.

I happened to be a perfect balance between the two Captains and often defused heated situations. I achieved this by rephrasing harsh criticism, presenting compromises, objectively analyzing situations, providing constructive feedback, and staying unemotionally charged.

Overall we were more productive and developed a deeper friendship, as both parties were able to appreciate and understand the other’s perspective.

Team Work  [Conflict

Resolution]  JDC West  

At the 2014 JDC West competition, western Canada’s largest business conference, I competed on Team Sauder as the Assistant Captain. I reported to two co-captains and the three of us comprised the executive team.  

Given the small size of the executive team, we worked closely together and built a strong relationship with one another. The two co-captains were very sensitive to the team’s best interest, however one captain was extremely extroverted, while the other was quite introverted. This often led to emotionally charged discussions where one or both captains would feel a combination of being attacked, under-appreciated or ignored. Their opposing views on confrontation made it difficult to resolve the issue.  

During executive meetings I strived for complete harmony amongst all 3 members by minimizing unproductive conflict, which often arose from lack of communication or disrespectful attitude. I interpreted the message from one captain and relayed that information to the other captain with a more courteous tone. My empathetic nature allowed me to understand where both captains were coming from and help them express their ideas or opinions. This allowed us to analyze issues objectively and focus on our strategic processes rather than emotional reactions.  

The Sauder JDC West team won the award title “Execs of the Year” due to our commitment and passion for the team and the overall development program.  

A team’s dynamic depends heavily on the uniqueness of the team members. It is important to be respectful of each others differences and embrace diversity of thought.
