Read Alouds, Shared Reading, and Graphic Organizers are scaffolds to help students make those connections.

Page 7: Read Alouds, Shared Reading, and Graphic Organizers

Read Alouds in secondary classrooms can be especially useful for activating prior knowledge and connecting to student experiences.

Factoring Methods

THE LIZZIE METHODTHE LIZZIE METHOD

Take, for example, the following quadratic equation: Take, for example, the following quadratic equation:

6x2+13x+6=06x2+13x+6=0

Multiply 6, the leading coefficient, by 6, the last Multiply 6, the leading coefficient, by 6, the last number in the equation.number in the equation.

6 x 6=366 x 6=36

Page 11: Read Alouds, Shared Reading, and Graphic Organizers

Find the two numbers that will multiply to 36 and also Find the two numbers that will multiply to 36 and also add to 13, the middle number.add to 13, the middle number.

4 x 9=36 4+9=134 x 9=36 4+9=13

This is the same way the Split Method starts out, but This is the same way the Split Method starts out, but here is where it changes.here is where it changes.

Now, simply divide each of these numbers by 6, the leading Now, simply divide each of these numbers by 6, the leading coefficient.coefficient.

4/6 and 9/6 reduce to 2/3 and 3/24/6 and 9/6 reduce to 2/3 and 3/2

At this point, rewrite the equation. At this point, rewrite the equation.

(x+2/3) (x+3/2)=0(x+2/3) (x+3/2)=0

Now find the two possible solutionsNow find the two possible solutions

x= -2/3 and -3/2x= -2/3 and -3/2

To put the equation in its factored form, the fractions must To put the equation in its factored form, the fractions must be cleared. Step back to (x+2/3) (x+3/2) +0 and bring each be cleared. Step back to (x+2/3) (x+3/2) +0 and bring each denominator over to its x.denominator over to its x.

(3x+2) (2x+3)=0(3x+2) (2x+3)=0

Voila! You have solved for the zeroes of the equation and Voila! You have solved for the zeroes of the equation and put it into its factored form.put it into its factored form.

Shared Reading is the practice of reading collaboratively with students. Students can follow along silently while the teacher reads aloud.

Another difference is that in shared reading there is a lesson specifically related to a comprehension strategy, text feature, or reading behavior.

Do you see any possible

• comprehension strategies,

• text features, or

• reading behaviors that you could teach students in this text sample?

Graphic Organizers are visual displays of information that promote and extend student understanding of concepts and the relationships between them.
