The city of San Daniele del Friuli is located in Italy in the region of Friuli
Venezia Giulia.
San Daniele del Friuli is the main center of the Friuli hillside and is
considered one of the "Pearls of Friuli."
The town is situated between the Adriatic Sea and the Julian
Alps, on a green hill in the moraine amphitheater of the river
Tagliamento at 252 meters above sea level.
It is surrounded by:
hills, woods and by a green agricultural plain where
the ancient river Tagliamento flows
A LITTLE OF HISTORY...
The first settlements in this area date back to prehistoric times, asevidenced by the discovery of traces of a fort, dating from between 900and 700 b. C., the firts building of the castrum Sancti Danielis is tracedback to 929 b. C.
In the Pre-roman age San Daniele del Friuli was an important Celticsettlement, thanks to its privileged position and its landscape facingNorth-East Europe. In the surroundings are the remains of severalforts, the typical Celtic buildings used as watchtowers.
Several ruins of the first century a.C. including several rustic villas,testify the presence of the Roman people in Roman times on theterritory.
It seems that the town existed in Longobard age when it wasinvolved in fights between the Longobards and the manorBavarians.
In 1036 it was joined by the patriarch of Aquileia, to themunicipality of Udine, it was later (1219) the manor of nobleswho used to precise “of San Daniele”; in the middle of the 13thcentury it returned under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch ofAquileia.
During the Venetian dominion it had a certain autonomy andexperienced a great development in the fields of art andliterature.
With the peace treaty of Campoformido, in 1797, it came underthe Austrian rule with the exception of the establishment of theKingdom of Italy and lasted until 1866, when it was annexed toItaly.

The main economic activity is the industry of
"prosciutto di San Daniele" known throughout the
world and that just takes its name from the town.
The secret of this product is the microclimate of the
town of San Daniele, given by the meeting of currents
fresh from the Alps to the Adriatic hot and humid;
also, the nature of the moraine ground, and high
spontaneous drainage, promote ventilation and
ensures curing.
The trout
The trout breeding and workman ship “The queen ofSan Daniele” and “Fil di fumo=thin trail of smoke”were born thirty years ago and are still bred withhealthy food while keeping their natural livingenvironment.
Trout as well as being thornless, ready to use andeasy to use, are characterized by the quality andgenuineness that make a food light highly easilydigestible and with a very low calorie content.

The Ancient Guarnerian library, one of the most prestigious libraries in
Italy as well as the oldest in the Friuli Venezia Giulia: the library
contains precious manuscripts.

eighteenth century, while the tower,
built by adapting one of the towers of
the ancient castle, dates back to
1486.
