Definition ‘victimology’

Victimology: “The science of the victim of crime” (H.J. Schneider, 2001)

The scientific study of the extent, nature and causes of criminal victimization, its consequences for the persons involved and the reactions thereto by society, in particular the police and the criminal justice system as well as voluntary workers and professional helpers.

But it’s not that simple…

Victimology:• Victimization by crime?

• Victimization by natural disasters or traffic accidents?

• Victimization by other potentially traumatic events (e.g., medical mistakes, bullying)?

Does it matter to the victim what caused the harm? Or that the harm was caused intentionally?

Also: crime not a straightforward concept (e.g., stalking)
