Definition ‘victimology’
Victimology: “The science of the victim of crime” (H.J. Schneider, 2001)
The scientific study of the extent, nature and causes of criminal victimization, its consequences for the persons involved and the reactions thereto by society, in particular the police and the criminal justice system as well as voluntary workers and professional helpers.

But it’s not that simple…
Victimology:• Victimization by crime?
• Victimization by natural disasters or traffic accidents?
• Victimization by other potentially traumatic events (e.g., medical mistakes, bullying)?
Does it matter to the victim what caused the harm? Or that the harm was caused intentionally?
Also: crime not a straightforward concept (e.g., stalking)

Welcomes students with HBO background with a pre-master in one of the disciplines that give direct access to our program under the following conditions: Pre-master completed with average grade of 8 or higher;
or Pre-master completed with average between 7 and 8,
plus a letter of motivation and letter of recommendation.
Application procedures are the same as for other programs offered by Tilburg Law School/Tilburg University (see last slide for website)

More courses in first semester and only courses in February and March in second semester: gives opportunity in second semester to do internship, combine Master with a job, participate in study trips or courses abroad and/or work on thesis

Master thesis is an individual assignment on a topic either proposed by the student or chosen from a list

- uniform quality standards
- efficiënt time schedule and (extra) check schedule peers
- but also: individual feedback during/after each meeting!

Extracurricular activities - I
Internships (within INTERVICT or at other organizations)
Intensive seminar week in Leuven (Belgium) on political crimes and transitional justice (Catholic University Leuven, University of Tubingen, Spring)Master students visit the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Last year they were ‘lucky’ to attend a session with Karadžić and Mladić present.

Post-graduate course in Victimology in Dubrovnik - Croatia
‘… We had no idea what to expect from this two week course, but it was truly amazing in every sense! We learnt so much and had interesting discussions in and outside the walls of the University with many interesting people.’
New in 2016: study trip to South Africa (organized by alumnus Vusi Kweyama)
‘… aiding reconciliation and social cohesion efforts through meaningful historical education and in building new, meaningful relations. Moreover, it is believed that our shared history might not be rosy, but the potential for creating a desirable history exists, and it is up to us to do it. The trip hopes to create a space for a new generation of scholars who are genuinely interested in mutually-beneficiary human relations, development projects and a global exchange of skills and economic benefits.’
