Introduction Globalization has flattened our world. In terms of

competition and commerce, the playing field has never

been more level. The web, workflow software, off-shoring

and supply chain has pushed business into a environment

of vague boundaries.

The old distinctions, geographical and otherwise, that

previously defined ways of doing business, are rapidly

loosing importance.

An expanding market place has given innovates a chance

to use there creativity to catchup profits.

The vehicle for IT’s future transformation is business service automation, which encompasses what is commonly referred to as process/ Run Book automation (RBA) and data center automation.

At the hub of this system is a federated Configuration Management Database (CMDB), which would act as a flexible data broker, providing accurate, comprehensive information for all of IT’s automated activities and strategic decisions.

The Supply Chain Automation Model The concept of Supply Chain Automation was first

used by Procter & Gamble in the US in 1980. Automation has been, and continues to be the key to

optimizing supply chain resources in domestic markets. Through automated inventory and logistics management, business have been able to shorten the chain, making it easier for them to function in constricted manufacturing or distribution environments.

IT can gain valuable advantages by automation the relationship between the Supplier (IT) and Customer (Business users) and by providing the technologies and services to meet the influx of the demand.

Why IT Needs Automation

Infrastructure Growth and Underutilization

Shortage of Skilled Labor

Pressure to Deliver Business Value

• Approx. 80% of IT work is devoted to maintenance and IT environments experience a 30% growth rate every year.

• Computer Servers are used at only 6% of their capacity on average, while data center facilities as a whole are used at 56% of peak performance.

Shortage of Skilled Labor

• Find out people with a balance of technical with business expertise is become even more critical for the closer relationship of IT with business.

Infrastructure Growth and Underutilization

Shortage of Skilled Labor

Pressure to Deliver Business Value

• Fulfillment of revenue targets and improving share prices alongside management of IT service Quality & cost are becoming fast additional areas of assessment for the businesses.

So, its needed to minimize the operational complexities of technology to perform well in these newer areas.

Benefits of IT AutomationLower Labor Costs:• Automation technologies increase efficiency by

automating customary, labor intensive , and error prone tasks.

• By automating the data center, staffing requirements can be effectively reduced by as much as 50%.

More Consistent Service Levels:• Automation reduces the human error, estimated to be

the cause of 40% of service outages. • According to Independent consulting firm (EMA),

datacenter automation reduces MTTR (Main time to repair) for system problems by an average of more than 60%.

Page 10: I.T.2003

Improved Compliance:• It ensures legal and company compliance

objectives are always mate.

Reduced Risk :• Data security can be improved through

automated security audit detection and by automatically deploying security pages and updates.

High ROI :

According to expert prediction by 2012, automation technology will achieve the highest ROI.

Challenges in IT Automation

Limited Visibility

Product Integration

Lack of Flexibility

• IT Applications Often Function On Multiple Tiers, Touching Various Servers &, In Many Cases, Numerous Databases.

Challenges in IT Automation

Limited Visibility

Product Integration

Lack of Flexibility

• To accommodate The Gaps Between Technologies, Organizations Frequently Buy Additional Automation Tools Which Creates Complexities By Too Much Purchasing & Too Little Effort At Integration.

Limited Visibility

Product Integration

Lack of Flexibility

• Traditionally, Most Businesses Have Automated Their Processes Statically But They Need To Be Flexible To Adjust According To The Changing Business Needs.

Page 14: I.T.2003

Automated IT As automation becomes more prevalent, I.T. will focus on managing its

supply chain and more on creating an IT value chain . In this effort, CIOS

will invest more time and resources in initiating, and responding to

opportunities that generate business/ customer value.

Due to the proliferation of social media, consumers will no longer be at the

end of the supply chain.

Just as globalization has transformed the chain into multiple decision making

points so will end customers, partners and employees across all lines of

business intercede at multiple points in the process of delivering a product or

service.

Conclusion Using automation, IT operations can emulate the domestic supply chain’s cost.

A CMDB empowers IT executives to be proactive.

As I.T.’s data broker, a federated CMDB accesses the information needed to automate business

services as a whole, throughout their entire life cycle wherever this data resides and regardless of its

originating vendor.

In coming future to achieve, customer satisfaction, I.T. must have a flexible master CMDB. Its

information model must be easily changeable to adopt to new security requirements, regulatory

changes , asset configuration, capacity adjustments, CI relationship modifications and process

alteration.

This achievement will, in turn, transform the current I.T. landscape , making it modular , responsive

and self-managing.

Concluding to everything, at the end of the, CMDB will bring I.T. executives closer to the

consumer.
