THE CHALLENGES OF TECHNOLOGY

Page 3: ISCN 2017: Working Group 1

"There is no argument that design and technology advances have improved the environmental performance of buildings. Well calibrated building management systems have improved the energy efficiency by optimising HVAC and lighting performance and reducing energy waste, particularly in low activity areas and during off peak periods. This is further enhanced by a range of other technologies, such as motion sensors, daylight and heat harvesting, insulation, smart meters, desktop dashboards and smart plugs.

However, what effect does the automation of buildings have on its occupants? Is there such a thing as too much technology?

GROUP 1 DISCUSSION/TASK

MAKE PEOPLE MATTER

Discuss the importance of occupant behaviour in the efficient operation of a smart building.

Develop strategies for creating better integration between occupant and infrastructure that will reduce rebound effect and promote reflex behaviour (e.g. minimising plug load, using natural light rather that building lighting, shorter and cooler showers etc)

GROUP 2 DISCUSSION/TASK

Smart Building….Smart People

Discuss post occupancy evaluation and training.

Develop a framework that will provide continuing education for occupants and facilitate the building an environmentally aware culture.
