APA Citations in HSA Research

Why do HSA classes insist on consistent and complete APA style citations and References page?

Avoid sloppy scholarship and suspect information.

Consistent style makes reading and fact checking easier.

Ability for readers of your work to find more material on the topic.

Crediting the authors and producers of valuable, relevant research for their contributions.

Insure that the work is your own.

Citation guides at Santa Fe

A Librarian at Santa Fe College has created an easy-to-use guide for creating APA style citations.

The APA guide shows you how to create citations for almost any resource you may use in your bibliography:

• Print Materials (books, maps, magazines, scripts, etc.)

• Electronic Materials (online articles, webpages, etc.)

• Media and other resources (YouTube, DVDs etc.)

APA References Page = List of sources of information used in paper

All resources that have been used in your research should be listed in the “References” page at the end of your APA style paper.

An example of a reference page:

Prepared by Susan Lester, Center for Academic Excellence, Saint Joseph College, August 2009 http://ww2.usj.edu/PDF/CAE/apareferencepage_6th_ed.pdf

Some Characteristics of an APA Reference Page:

• Alphabetic order by author, or title if no author listed

• Hanging indent of 5 spaces

• Double spaced

• Includes all types of sources i.e. books, journal articles, webpages, etc.

In-Text Citations

The Reference Page has the information necessary for a reader to find the sources you used in your report.

APA style also requires a citation in the text of your paper when you use a direct quotation or

paraphraseCalled an “In-Text Citation”
