The Base

• Prepare the site, removing any large objects such as rocks.

• The wooden frame for the base should be 280 cm X 280cm

• Ensure that the mould for the base is of a depth of 15 cm

• Dig a trench to a depth of 15 cm to contain the tubing from the water source

• Mark with fishing line the extent of the standing platform.

• The standing platform should be a width of 50cm surrounding the drain.

• Mark out the centre of the base and the point at which the water source will enter the tank

• Insert the galvanised steel tubing which will be attached to the water source.

• When attaching steel tubing, use tape around the joints to ensure that they are secure.

• Insert the drain and overflow tubing, ensuring that the elbow joints are attached securely with glue.

• The overflow tubing should be positioned ? And be cut to a height of ?cm

• The drainage tubing should be positioned ? and be cut to a height of ?cm

• Secure the mould for the base and ensure that there are no large gaps that the cement can seep out of.

• Place rocks within the mould ensuring that they do not protrude above the 15cm mark.

• Leave a ?cm gap adjacent to the mould wall so that the cement can fill

• Construct a metal frame over the standing platform, constructed from iron rods.

• The rods are tied with wire using a standard wire melders knot.

• The rods should be spaced by?cm

• Fill the area which will become the standing platform, with cement.

• Start at the mould walls walls.

• Ensure that the cement does not go over the 15cm mark, marked by the fishing line

Tap Island and Drainage

Part 1

• Construct the mould wall for the drainage island. The dimensions should be ? X ?

• Construct the reinforcing metal frame to be inserted inside the mould. Its dimensions should be ? X ?, with ? spacing

• Insert the metal frame inside the mould.

• Fill the inside with rocks• Ensure that a ? Gap is left by the

walls to allow cement to fill.• The rocks should be filled to a

height of ? Cm within the mould.

• Insert the drain tube, consisting of 4 pvc tubes connected in the middle by either a cross or two tee’s.

• The drain outflow tube will need to be cut down to size.

• In this case a cross has been used

• The drain outflow tube should be lower than the other 3 drains to allow for water to flow out.

• Each drain is connected to a tube fixed with a ? Which is pushed close against the mould wall so that once cement has dried and the mould has been removed the drain tubes can be easily accessed from the outside for cleaning.

• Fill with cement, starting at the sides and ensuring that the cement is packed down to the base.

• Block the drain openings with paper to ensure that cement cannot enter.

• Place a wooden frame within the mould to form the rim of the basin.

• The frame should have the dimensions of –fitting within the metal frame.

• Fill the rim with cement

Base

Part 2

• Make a wooden mould for the tap island with gaps cut into the top to hold the forcetts.

• Make the reinforcing grid to be placed inside

• Place the wooden mould in the centre of the handwashing station.

• Ensure that it is level

• Insert the reinforcing metal frame inside the wooden mould.

• Fill the mould with rocks to a height of ?

• Ensuring that the clean out tube and the water source protrude above.

• Place rocks around the outside of the mould

• Fill with cement

• Fix the forcetts together.

• Stuff paper into the openings so as to ensure cement cannot enter

• Begin to fill the mould with cement

• Place the forcett piping in the spaces within the mould

• Finish filling the mould with cement

• Finish filling the basin with stones, ensuring that the drains are filled with paper.

• Cover with cement

Tank and Tapadera

• Build the mould for the tank with dimensions of ?? and place on top of the tap island

• Screw a galvanised metal pipe onto the metal pipe protruding from the cement of the tap island.

• The pipe will lie within the tank wall once the cement is added.

• To reinforce the tank walls attach ? Iron rods to the protruding frame in the tap island.

• The rods should have their top end bent to form a hook and protrude ? Above the tank mould

• Take 5 iron rods and bend them to form a square with the dimensions of ?

• The square will need to be tied together with wire.

• Place the iron squares over the mould to create a frame

• Attach wooden boards over the metal frame to create the outside of the tank mould wall

• Fill the mould with cement

• Ensure that the mould walls are secure

• Once the inner mould walls are removed, ensure that the pipe from the water source is not obstructed and is clearly visible.

• Apply another layer of cement to ensure that the walls are smooth

• Construct the wooden supports on which to apply the roof cement.

• Place the wooden frame for the trap door in one corner of the roof.

• attach iron rods across the roof for reinforcement.

• Attach the ends to the metal frame of the tank wall

• Put in place the metal frame for the trapdoor and the latches.

• Place two tubes in the roof for the clear out tube and in this case to harvest rain from the adjacent building roof

• Once the cement has dried, remove the remaining moulds

• For the trap door lid construct a wooden mould

• And a reinforcing frame with a pvc tube attached

• Put the wooden frame in place and place the metal frame inside.

• Cover the ends of the tubing with wet paper

• Fill with cement

• Tidy the edges of the handwashing station

• Placing a pvc tube into the drain, cover with cement

• Sprinkle with dry cement then water to help create a smooth finish
