Hi, this is AJ and it’stime for secret num-ber four, rule number

four, for Excellent EnglishSpeaking. Now, you’ve learned three

powerful ones already and justusing those three is really goingto help your English speaking. I

think you’re going to enjoylearning English a lot more. But, as I said, it’s a full systemso you really need to learn allseven, so let’s learn numberfour today.Secret number four is this.

Learn deeply. Learn deeply. What do I mean by that? We

have this idea of wide and shal-low. Think of water, for exam-ple. Shallow water is like this.Deep water is like an ocean, very, very deep. So when we’retalking about learning some-thing deeply it means you to-tally learn it and master it.There’s a great quote from a

guy named Tony Robbins, which is this. “Repetition is themother of skill. Repetition isthe mother of skill.” It means tobe very skillful, to be very greatat something, you’ve gotta re-peat it so many times. Wellthat’s basically what we’re talk-ing about here, learning some-thing deeply, totally, completely. Onceagain, it’s the oppo-site of what happensin school in mostEnglish classes.

What happens inthe normal Englishclass, the normalEnglish school, thetraditional way oflearning? Well, yougo very, very, very fast, right? There’s a lot of pressure to keepgoing and learning more, more, more, more, because you haveto finish the textbook. Everyteacher feels some pressure tofinish the textbook in the cor-rect time, right? We have to fin-ish the textbook this year, sonext year we can do the nexttextbook. We’ve gotta finishbook number one. We’ve gottado it quickly so that next yearwe can do book two. It wouldbe terrible not to finish booknumber one this year.

That’s the idea that they haveand it’s totally crazy and wrong. So, here’s what happens. Every

week or every two weeks you’relearning something new in yourEnglish class, new grammar, forexample. So, you learn the pasttense and then two or threeweeks later oh, now you’relearning the present perfect andthen a few weeks later nowyou’re learning the future.

That is crazy! There is no way youcan master and trulylearn the past tense, for example, in justa few weeks. Even injust a couple ofmonths it’s not pos-sible. Then you startadding more andmore and more andmore and, of course,

all the vocabulary lists. Moreand more and more, every weekanother huge list of words tomemorize and there’s all thispressure to go faster, faster, faster.

So, what happens of course? You study all this stuff for thetest. You memorize it. You mem-orize it. You take the test.Maybe you get a good grade, maybe you don’t. Then after thetest you forget a lot of it, right, because you never learned itdeeply. You just memorized itshort term and then you forgeta lot of it. Or maybe you re-member it, but you can’t use it.I know you know the past tense. t

I know you’ve studied it, but doyou always use it correctly? Ifthe answer is no, if you stillmake mistakes, it’s because younever learned the past tensedeeply.

Now, I have no problem withthe past tense. Is it because I’ma genius? No. Of course it’s be-cause I learned English as asmall child and I mastered thepast tense. How did I do it?How did I learn it so deeply?Through lots of repetition.

My parents did not try toteach me the present perfect orthe future progressive or some-thing when I was very small.No. I heard the past tense againand again and again, every sin-gle day, hundreds of times a day, thousands of times a day, untilthe past tense was so deep inmy mind I didn’t need to thinkabout it anymore and I don’tneed to think about it. It’s to-tally automatic.

That is deep learning. That’swhat you need. You need to

slow down and totally learnwhat you are studying, what youare listening to. You need tocompletely master it; to know itdeep inside, not just know it inyour brain.

It’s the same with vocabulary. You might a word, like if I askyou the meaning you can tellme the meaning, but can youuse it instantly in a conversa-tion, a real conversation? If I

say it in a conversation do youinstantly and automatically un-derstand it completely? If not,you have not learned it deeply.

Now you’re beginning to un-derstand why you are havingproblems with English speak-ing. You may think you know alot of grammar and vocabulary, but most of it you do not knowdeeply. It’s not automatic. Youhave to think about it. So, you

have to change the way youlearn. Once again, this is an-other secret, another rule, something else you need tochange about the way you’relearning English.

Now, the most basic way todo this is to do the opposite ofschool. So instead of hurrying, instead of trying to go fast, anew chapter all the time, Iwant you to do the opposite. Iwant you to go slowly. For ex-ample, when you buy our les-sons I will tell you that eachlesson set – a lesson set hasmaybe four or five connectedabout the same topic – youmust study that one lesson setat least 10 days to two weeks.Maybe even more, maybe threeweeks. Maybe one full monthfor a lesson set. Why? BecauseI want you to repeat that lessonevery single day.

Of course you’re listeningwith your ears, so what you’regoing to do is you’re going tolisten to each of those lessons. It’s about an hour total. Everyday you’ll listen to those, maybeonce, maybe twice a day. Thenext day you’ll listen to thosesame audios again and the nextday the same audios again andthe next day the same audiosagain for 10 days, 14 days, 21days, more if necessary.

It’s not a race. You don’t needto hurry. No. What I want you

to do is totally, completely learnit. Know it deeply, automati-cally. And, of course, the waywe design our lessons there’salso a lot of repetition in thelessons. So, let’s say there arefour or five different audios in

that set, each of those audios isusing some of the same vocabu-lary, a lot of the same grammar.

So, you hear it in one situa-tion. Then you hear it in an-other audio article. Then youhear it in a kind of funny, crazystory. Then you hear it in an-other situation. So you’re hear-ing the same thing, but indifferent situations. So it’s notboring. It’s still interesting, butyou’re getting that repetition soyou will start to learn the vocab-ulary and the grammar much

more deeply. That’s how oursystem is designed. It’s very, very important.

So, here’s the thing. You haveto do a lot of repeating. Focuson repeating a lot and doing asmaller amount of material. So,

instead of reading 20 booksread one book, but read itslowly and well. A better exam-ple is audio. Instead of listeningto 50 audios and watching 20movies, pick three audios andlisten to them every single day,the same audios for seven days,14 days, 20 days, whatever, lotsand lots and lots of repetition.

Then the phrases will go intoyour mind deeply. The grammarwill start getting in there. Youdon’t need to think about it. Ithappens automatically. If it’s

easy, the new vocabulary gets inthere. All of these things godeeper, deeper, deeper eachtime you listen until it becomesautomatic. You don’t need totranslate. You don’t need tothink about it. It will pop out ofyour mouth.

That is the power of deeplearning and it never stops. Itnever stops. I’m still hearingevery single day the past tensein English. So, in a way, I’m get-ting more repetition. It neverstops. I’ll never stop as long asI’m alive. It’s never ending. It’sthe same for you. You neverstop, but you listen to fun andinteresting things so the repeti-tion is fun and interesting.

If you’re focusing on text-books, schools and grammar,ah, of course repetition is diffi-cult because it’s painfully bor-ing, but with our lessons, forexample, you’re listening tofunny, crazy, interesting stuff soit’s easy to repeat it seven daysor 14 days or 20 days. It’s not aproblem. You can go out andfind other interesting audiosand do the same thing.

So, here it is. Secret numberfour, rule number four very im-portant, learn deeply. Repetitionis the mother of skill. Learndeeply.

All right, I will see you tomor-row for secret number five. Havea great day, bye-bye. ■
