What is secret number one?Secret number one is always

study and learn phrases not in-dividual words.

All right, so what’s a phrase?A phrase is simply a group ofwords. It doesn’t need to be afull sentence, although that’sfine. It’s a group of words, morethan one word. That’s a phrase.

So, this is a very, very simplerule, simple secret, but ex-tremely powerful. In fact, this isone of the keys to learning andmastering English grammarwhen you speak and it’s muchbetter than studying grammartextbooks.

So, in your traditional Englishclasses, schools and books, inyour normal classes that youtook before, the normal booksthat you used before, how didyou learn? Well, when youlearned vocabulary you hadlong vocabulary lists, right?

Usually at the back of thechapter there’s a list and yousee the word and then maybe atranslation of the meaning inyour own language. You juststudied these lists of words andtried to memorize them for atest. Then, probably, you forgotmost of them. That’s what usu-ally happens.

This is a very painful and bor-ing method, right? I mean no-body likes studying lists ofvocabulary words. Good. Goodnews for you. Stop doing it. Itdoesn’t work. You don’t need to t

do it anymore. What you doneed to do is focus on natural,real English phrases. When youdo this you get free grammar.Let me give you a very simpleexample, so simple.

John hates ice cream.Now, of course “to hate”

means to dislike; to not likesomething verystrongly. So, Johnhates ice cream.

Let’s imagine that“hate” is a new wordfor you. Now, in thenormal, traditionalway of learning, youwould find “tohate”, that versionof the verb, in theback of the chapter or in thechapter of your book and you’dwrite it down “to hate”. Itmeans to not like something.Then you would study that ver-sion of the verb, to hate, tohate, to hate.

Then, later, you would learnall of these complicated rulesabout how to change that verbin different situations. I hate.He hates, with an “s”. Then youwould learn the past tense andthe future and all this stuff.You’d have to remember thebasic form of the verb “to hate”and then you would have to re-member how to change it.

That’s the old way of doing it.It’s painful and boring and it

doesn’t work, because it causesyou to be thinking too muchwhen you should be speakingeasily and automatically. Whenyou learn a phrase, you justwrite down the phrase.

So, first of all, you get yourphrase from some natural Eng-lish, not a textbook, and you

write down “Johnhates ice cream.”You write down thefull phrase always.You never writedown just one word.You never just writedown the dictionaryform of the word.You would not writedown “to hate”. You

would write down “John hatesice cream” and you might put anote to remind you where thatphrase comes from. So, youmight put it comes from a storythat you read or it comes fromsomething you heard in amovie, whatever it is. It remindsyou of the real situation that itcame from.

Now, when you just study thisphrase “John hates ice cream”,you never study just one word,you’re studying the phrase,you’re automatically gettinggrammar. You don’t need toknow about singular or plural oranything like that. You will learnnaturally by learning phraseslike this that you always say “he t

hates”, “she hates”, “Johnhates”, “Mary hates”. It will be-come natural.

See, this is how native speak-ers learn grammar. This is how Ilearned English grammar my-self as a child. We don’t studygrammar rules and we certainlydon’t study vocabulary lists, butwhat we do learn from our par-ents and from other people iswe just hear natural phrases allthe time.

So, for me, I naturally feeldeeply that if I say “John” thatI’m always going to put an “s”on there “John hates”, becauseI’ve heard phrases like that somany times. I feel the grammar.I don’t need to think about it. Ifeel it because I learn phrases,not individual words, not gram-mar rules, not from textbooks.

This is so simple but is verypowerful if you use it correctly,but you must do it all the time.So, never study a single Englishword again. Always, always, al-ways, when you learn some-

thing new, write down the fullphrase, even the full sentence;super important. This is verypowerful, but very simple.

Now, here’s the easy way todo it. Go get yourself a smallnotebook, a phrase notebook,just a little notebook that you’dcarry around with you all thetime. Carry it in your jacket, putit in your backpack and thenany time you find a new word inEnglish, maybe something

you’re reading, somethingyou’re listening to, it doesn’tmatter, you’re just going towrite it down in your phrasenotebook, but you’re going towrite the whole phrase.

So, if “hate” was a new wordfor you, you would not justwrite down that word “hate”.You would write down the fullphrase “John hates ice cream”or “John hates”. It’s up to you,but you’re always going to write

down at three or four wordsthat go with that vocabulary,very, very important. Then whenyou learn new words, you justkeep adding to it.

Then in the future when youreview, when you’re studying,when you’re reviewing your vo-cabulary, you always review thefull phrases, always, always, al-ways. You never study the indi-vidual word. You always, always,always review and study fullphrases. By doing this you’regoing to learn how to use vo-cabulary naturally and correctly.

You see, sometimes we usecertain words in certain situa-tions. There might be anotherword that means the samething, but we don’t use it in thatsituation. How do you knowthat? There are no rules aboutthat. The only way you knowthat is by studying phrases,phrases that you get from realEnglish and by real English Imean not textbooks.

Another thing, again, you getfree grammar with this. There’sgoing to be so much grammarin those phrases you don’t needto think about it. It’s just goingto be there naturally. If it’s anatural, real correct phrase, theverbs are going to be correct.The possessives will be therewhen they need to be. The cor-rect prepositions will be inthere. You don’t need to think t

about it. Oh, when do I use“on”? When do I use “in”?When do I use “at”? You don’tneed to think about that, justlearn phrases.

Eventually you start gettingmore and more of thesephrases, there’s a lot of repeti-tion and you’ll start to get afeeling for how these thingswork in English. How the gram-mar works. How the preposi-tions work. When do you usecertain vocabulary, when do younot. It happens automatically,unconsciously. Meaning, youdon’t need to think about it allthe time. It just feels automatic.This is the way children learngrammar and vocabulary, andthe way you must also, if youwant to speak English easily,automatically and effortlessly.

So, that’s it very simple. Rulenumber one, our secret numberone, always learn and studyphrases, never individual words.

All right, this is just secretnumber one. We’ve got seven ofthem. When you put them alltogether, you’re going to have acompletely new way of learningEnglish. You will get fantasticresults, just follow these se-crets. So, secret number one,always learn phrases. Never,ever study individual words.
