Read the book One World, One Day (from the main branch – asked who went and had a library card). Details about each picture of children included are noted in a map on the back (reviewed where maps are in the media center). Asked children to think about where each picture could have been taken as I read the book. Elaborated on communities, similarities, and differences with open discussion. Showed them Children Just Like Me by Kindersley from our collection. Used almanacs and the Smartboard with grades 2 and 3 to find information about countries, including language spoken and currency. The students found countries that spoke English, German, French, and Spanish and wrote the county in the table on the Smartboard.

PA. (Initially I used Google Earth, but it caused more distractions and the schedule is tight). Discussed technology. Pointed out African-American authors and illustrators books located on a special table. Reviewed prominent figures with the UR, noting biographies, and reviewed the author’s note in the back of Henry’s Freedom Box. When lining up, prompted them to remain quiet ands still on their Underground Railroad and stand directly behind their classmate (hiding behind a tree) so they would not be noticed.

Participated as a judge in the spelling bee. The panel had to resolve three questions. I am fortunate to have had this experience. I was responsible for setting up the sound system and I assisted the counselor with LOTS of last minute items for her, including loaning the pronouncer a pair of my reading glasses.

2/4 Receipted money for lost books, submitted, and recorded receipt in receipt book. Added new books, a video, and magazines into the catalog. Created original record for the video. Ran circulation desk (checked books in/out and shelved). Door opened quickly, “Edie, please bring a camera!” It was the school principal and there was a program with Ronald McDonald and a McDonalds owner and she wanted a picture taken. Added new students in AR and in Follett. Several students came to the media center asking about specific inventions and inventors – the collection did not have individual books and some could not be located in the encyclopedia. I went to the teacher’s room and asked if I could discuss/review research skills and we agreed on me coming to her room. Using a computer and projector I walked them through locating NC Wiseowl from our webpage and we looked at resources available,

successfully finding information on those we did not have in the media center. I also spoke to them about the reasons to search at a site such as NC Wiseowl – internet safety, better results than just “Googling”, and appropriate for age. I also emphasized that OPAC was available on every computer – the teacher did not know that!

2/5 Ran circulation desk (checked books in/out and shelved). Counted number of paperback books in the fiction section and 200-700 sections for LSTA grant. Scheduled laptops for 3rd grade survey. In the AR program, identified the Battle of the Books team, ran a report of the quizzes taken, and recorded each score on a spreadsheet for Mrs. D’Aurelio. Created a display for the NC Children’s Book Award Nominees. Emailed Ms. Pazzula, an ESL teacher, and confirmed her attendance to translate for the scheduled reading night. Worked for 30 minutes on the grant with constant interruptions which made it impossible to concentrate on the grant and to give the students the proper assistance they deserve, so we suspended working on it. Mrs. D’Aurelio cleared with the principal the immediate need to work on the LSTA grant on Monday – the library will not be open for checkout Monday. Contacted a middle school media coordinator about the possibility of working with her for the 15 hour requirement. She agreed, but suggested two others that were doing “tech savvy” projects. Interesting. She is going to email me next week with dates that have “lots going on”. Mrs. D’Aurelio and I made plans to work on the grant on Saturday.
