  • 2Welcome to the 8th Annual Edie Creek Angus 2-Year Old Bull Sale!

Congrats to all who kept holding on to the proverbial cow s tail long enough to see yourselves through to prosperous times in the beef industry! It s rewarding to be paid for your hard work, and to actually see prices reflecting the increase in input costs. As encouraging as it may be, we still need to plan on minimizing costs for our operations so that we don t just increase our expenses to match our new level of income.

We believe that investing now in maternal cowherd genetics will create the optimum factory that will thrive on lower-input feeding regimes and take care of their calves without human intervention FEED COSTS and LABOUR are two of the biggest expenses in the cow-calf beef business. These bulls are developed correctly as two year olds to provide the ultimate breeding bulls to leave you trouble-free cows and add pounds to your calf crop WITHOUT adding FRAME SCORE CREEP to your replacement heifer calves. We believe that Frame Score Creep over time has produced harder-doing Diesel-dependent cows, and that a 1300 lb commercial cow should come in an easy-fleshing 4 or 5-Frame package, and not be a hard-doing 7-Frame cow that needs extra groceries to rebreed.

The 2-Year Old bulls in this sale are red-meat-packing breeding machines that will add POUNDS without adding FRAME. They will sire a very UNIFORM calf crop that are born easily and nurse quickly, and will establish an efficient, Maternal Cowherd Factory that can then be mated with terminal sires to add hybrid vigor performance and the "flavour of the day" in hide colour. Doing this will create a functional, long-living cowherd that will wean calves at the highest efficiency in your commercial ranch environment.

    Blessings from

Many Purebred Breeders claim to have easy fleshing cattle, but don t have the genetics to back that up and still have big-framed, high maintenance cows. Our cowherd is unique, with generations of OCC breeding. The Ohlde Cattle Co cowherd is one of the most complete, truly easy-fleshing cowherds on the continent, supplying genetics to many US purebred outfits as well as commercial cowherds in Argentina and Brazil. Tim Ohlde is one of the greatest true Cattle Breeders of our Era. Many pursue Performance and Popularity , but few Breeders truly follow or even have such a vision to create functional cattle which balance maternal traits and adequate performance for the cow-calf man while still producing high-yielding beef carcasses. Gerald Stokka, DVM, Associate Professor of Livestock Stewardship at NDSU said Tim Ohlde is the best applied geneticist in America today.

Our pursuit of Top Maternal Genetics has seen a very successful embryo flushing and implanting day in Spring of 14, and we eagerly await the unique genetics to be born this spring and onwards, with a growing herd of unique frozen genetics in the Tank. We plan to implant 40 embryos this spring. Our AI season happened out on pasture as a result of our new calving season Yes, we finally moved our calving season to May/June! Our herdsires OCC Worthy Man, Emblazon, Zorro, and Tubby, shared pasture service duties, and we are very much looking forward to a warmer calving season with exciting genetics to come!

We are also really excited about a couple of Herdsires we have lined up to import from Tim Ohlde of OCC in Palmer Kansas and Monte Howrey in Vale, SD as a result of our two road trips. We will announce more once they have landed in Canada!

We have seen much and learned lots in our travels! We are confident that the genetics we are pulling from the bull batteries of these respected breeders will ultimately make you, the commercial cattlemen, more profitable in the long run by stacking more of the grass-based maternal genetics you expect from Edie Creek Angus.

  • Bull Development These bulls have been raised on their mothers milk and grass. Once they were weaned, they went out and Grazed until early November. They were then brought in and fed Grass-Alfalfa silage with 2lbs of Barley and free choice oat straw. In June they were turned out to pasture, with no supplements, where they grew well until the beginning of November 2014. At this time, they came home and received a Grass-Alfalfa silage ration with 4.5 lbs of barley, plus free choice hay. They have not been pushed with hard feed so that they will breed longer for you.Bull Program Bulls can be kept at Edie Creek Angus for $2/day until May 1st. After that, the cost will be $3/day. Free delivery available to Ashern Auction Mart. If you haul your bull on Sale day we will give you a $50 discount on each bull. Bulls MUST be insured if they are to be kept on our farm.

T E R M S A N D C O N D I T I O N S The terms of sale are by cash or cheque. Settlement to be made immediately after the completion of the sale. The right of property will not pass until after settlement is made. Bulls will not be released until settlement is made. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer s decision on all disputes is nal.Announcements and Changes: All announcements and changes made from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in this catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay close attention to any such announcements.Purchaser's Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as the auctioneers hammer falls for the nal time. Liabilities: All persons attending the sale do so at their own risk and sellers assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents occurring in or about the premises. G U A R A N T E E : All bulls have been evaluated for breeding soundness and semen quality by Dr. Sharon Pydee of Beausejour Animal Hospital. We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull at the point of sale. Should your bull fail to be a satisfactory breeder, he will be replaced with a bull of equal value or a credit will be given towards the purchase of another bull. We will not provide the replacement or credit for a bull that is physically injured or mismanaged. It is the responsibility of the buyer to insure their bulls.

    * BULL EVALUATIONS E X P L A I N E D : Calving Ease: Based on the bull's birthweight, his parents' birthweight, and his own EPD's. Also based on the assumption that the bull will be breeding small-framed Angus/British cattle--if the bull will be breeding larger-framed Continental cattle, a three-star (***) bull may work on heifers without any trouble. These are simply guidelines to help your decision making. You are ultimately responsible for the matings of your own cattle. Calving Ease Rating: "*" - Suitable for breeding cows only - 100lb+ Birthweights possible ** - Suitable for breeding smaller cows-90 lb+ Birthweights possible"***" - Suitable for breeding cows and larger-framed, mature heifers - 85 lb BW s"****" -Suitable for breeding heifers + cows too - 84 lbs or less ***** -HEIFER BULL, easy deliveries with vigorous calves at birth!

Udder Rating:Based on the quality of the dam's udder structure and teat shape and size. Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be an average, functional udder, while a score of "5" would be a perfectly level udder with small, shapely teats.

Forage Rating:Designed to predict the ability of the bull's offspring to thrive in a forage-only environment. The forage rating is also a suitable indicator of the bull's own ability to stay in good flesh on a low-energy ration ("easy-keeping-ness"). Rated between "1" - "5", a score of "3" would be moderately easy fleshing, while a score of "5" would be very easy fleshing and his offspring would finish on forages alone.

Worthy Man is one AMAZING bull! He stays fat as a seal and adds thickness and length to his calves. Putting this bull into Edie Creek pedigrees has already paid off. Everyone who sees him is just amazed: no one has seen such a rump on an Angus bull. And he does it without grain. He also is a terrific calving ease bull, so when we stack this kind of genetic ability in our herd, we are getting the bases covered! This years sons are all out of first time calving heifers. We have been extremely glad to own him and have him walking our pastures! You will find his sons come sale day.

Eureka 9466 was a bull we bought from Bowerman Bros. Angus Ranch in SK. He came to us as a heifer bull, but we quickly found out that was not the job for him. The sons in this sale are all off first time calvers. We also liked his pedigree as an out-cross to a lot of the Emblazon and Legacy influence we have.

Tremendous is a calving ease specialist who changes the frame score in one genetic move. This year we have one terrific son: Lot 23. We tried to get Tremendous bought in 2008 at the Ohlde bull sale, but he went for $28,000. Thankfully we were able to get some semen! Tremendous is also a maternal champion. Generations of great cows stand behind him.

One of the best herd of mother cows we have ever seen. Good fleshing ability , good feet and trim udders with small teats.Impressed by the Bouw family's knowledge of bloodlines and their passion for the cow business. We anxiously await the arrival of our calves this spring from the bull we purchased last March. - Glen and Dawn Ekert, Moosomin Sask

You have discovered the direction the Angus breed was known for and should continue to be known for. Fads come and go but it has to be the basics that we all need to stick to: the cow which needs to problem free, calve regularly, raise a good calf close to half her mature weight at weaning and convert the cheapest form of energy available, grass! Efficiently. Congratulations on sticking to your vision. We are very happy and enthusiastic about the bulls we have purchased over the last number of years. They are honestly the easiest keeping cattle we have come across for a long time. The libido of these bulls have been outstanding, with several having breeding group sizes of up to 60 animals. Their daughters are now coming into production in large volumes and are proving to be easy keeping, medium framed, good uddered and good temperament. Keep up the great work! I look forward to continue adding your genetics to our cow herd!

It is with fondness we remember and sadly say good-bye to our long-time friend, Helmut Kebernik. Known by some as the Cattle Baron of the (Beausejour) Sand Hills, Helmut worked with his sons James and Owen, and was greatly supported by his loving wife of 50 years, Elizabeth.

Helmut was a great cattleman, a man of integrity, and a great storyteller! He also had a very optimistic outlook on life and farming, was an extremely likeable fellow and had a firm grasp on his business numbers, a true farm businessman.

Helmut also shared our enthusiasm for Black Angus cattle, and we share a very special connection through our Black Angus cattle, as the first registered Black Edie Creek Angus cattle were purchased from Helmut s Black Rose Ranch. Helmut sold many hundreds of Black Angus bulls and females, and more recently, as the herd evolved to being a large commercial Angus herd, has been an Angus industry supporter by his purchases at the Keystone Klassic and Bull Sales around the province.

We considered it a huge honour when Helmut and James Kebernik began to purchase bulls in our sale in 2011, and are very glad to hear how well our bulls have served their needs since then. To have Helmut s nod of approval through his visual appraisal of cattle and following through by purchasing bulls has been very encouraging.

We will miss Helmut s huge smile and encouraging spirit, and we wish the Kebernik Family all the best as they adjust to living life without the presence of this great man.
