URBAN VILLAGE COMMUNITY LIFECommunity life is growing in Dublin’s Fair City. This summer, Fine GaelCouncillor Edie Wynne attended three street parties where residents fromBeechwood Park, Moyne Road and Eglinton Terrace and Rampart Laneput in hard work to organise a party for themselves and their neighbours. All three were a great success. Added to that was the Harold’s CrossBealtaine Festival earlier in the year and the very successful Ranelagh ArtsFestival has become an annual event. “Residents Associations alsosponsored local sports tournaments for children of local families,”Councillor Wynne said, and would like to advise residents that Dublin CityCouncil actively supports, on request, local initiatives.

SUPPORT FOR URBAN VILLAGE BUSINESSESFine Gael has job creation as our key objective. With this in mind, CouncillorWynne has visited with the Fine Gael Lord Mayor, Councillor Gerry Breen, each village in our area. Traders were also invited to attend a workshop inthe Mansion House at the end of August.

“It was very well attended and businesses from different parts of the cityexchanged ideas about how to increase business by innovative marketing intheir own villages,” Councillor Wynne explained. “Most people werepleased with our efforts on their behalf and a number have said that theyare acting on some of the ideas that emerged. In this Newsletter - again – Irespectfully suggest shopping local to keep our local businesses thriving.”

LIFFEY SWIMIn its 90th year, more than 350 swimmers bravedblustery conditions to swim the Liffey for the 2.2kmfrom Watling Street Bridge near Guinness Brewery toCustoms House Quay. Councillor Edie Wynne wasthere to cheer on the swimmers with her brother,Liam, whose son was one of the swimmers. Well doneto all the competitors who had to complete four ofSwim Ireland’s open water competitions to qualify forthis historic river swim.

Considerable interest is being shown by residents of Ringsend, Sandymount and further afield in the future ofthe Poolbeg Chimneys. A number of very interesting suggestions have been made to Councillor Wynne, whichshe is pursuing. In the meantime, she has asked the City Manager to enter into discussion with the ESB on theoptions for their future. She will keep in touch with you on this subject.

BALLSBRIDGEThis year Councillor Edie Wynne, in her capacity asDeputy Lord Mayor of Dublin, had the honour ofopening the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horseshow in theRDS, in the heart of the local Electoral Area.

“I travelled with family members to the RDS fromthe Mansion House in the Lord Mayor’s Coach, whichis used only twice in the year – for the Horseshowand on St Patrick’s Day. I found such positive reactionand enthusiasm on the journey that I have asked theCouncil management to consider other, appropriateways in which the coach could be used for thebenefit of business and tourism in the City.”Councillor Wynne said.

CYCLING IN THE CITYFollowing representations by Councillor Wynne thatDublin Bikes should be provided outside the canal areato meet the demand for them, Dublin City Council iscurrently investigating the feasibility of a phasedexpansion of the network (Dublin Bikes) to otherimportant areas of the city, including areas outside thecanal. An interdepartmental working group has beenset up to commence this work.

RATHFARNHAM BUS CORRIDORThe changes proposed by what is called theenhancement of Rathfarnham Bus Corridor may begood for Dublin Bus. However, Councillor EdieWynne has been told by many constituents thatthese proposals will cause great inconvenience tomany people in the local community, from the pointof view of accessing school routes, shopping andsporting activities. While a quality bus service isdesirable, this must be balanced with dueconsideration for real and ongoing village communityneeds. Councillor Wynne has advised both residentsand traders to study the proposals and make theirviews known to Quality Bus Network.

HAROLD’S CROSSAt long last! One of the first representations thatCouncillor Wynne received on becoming a CityCouncillor was about the wish of residents of MountDrummond Avenue to enhance their Avenue byhaving flowers planted around the base of the trees onthe median strip. Finally, this summer some flowers, provided by Dublin City Council, were planted with alot of assistance from one resident and commitmentfrom others to water and maintain them. Now thatMount Drummond Avenue is on the list to receiveflowers we all look forward to the ongoingenhancement of this lovely area.

In response also to a letter from local residents ofHarold’s Cross Cottages and adjoining street, theManager has agreed to send a team out to clean thearea as suggested by the resident’s letter.

30KP/H SPEED LIMITSDublin City Councillors are reviewing the 30kp/h speedlimit that was imposed in many parts of the city centresix months ago with a view to having it apply only to avery small area along the quays that is heavilypedestrianised. There has been significant adversereaction to its introduction from many people who saythat this speed limit makes no sense because it is verydifficult to keep below 30kp/h especially when there islittle traffic on the streets. There is also considerableconfusion as to what streets are included and whichones are not. While Councillor Wynne objected to theintroduction of the 30kp/h limits over a wide area inthe city centre, she strongly supports them beingimplemented adjacent to schools.
