LOOK AROUND…SURPRISES ABOUND

Moyara RuehsenCreativity CourseAssignment #2

Page 2: Creativity course assignment2

I have a confession to make.

I shop……a lot…

Page 3: Creativity course assignment2

…for food.

Page 4: Creativity course assignment2

Why? Because I’m obsessive compulsive about getting the best

deal and finding the specific brand I want…even if it means driving all

over town.

Page 5: Creativity course assignment2

But not until now have I paid close attention to the shopping experience at

each of these stores. Consider their entrances…

Page 6: Creativity course assignment2

What’s with these unsightly garbage cans next to these main

entrances???

Page 7: Creativity course assignment2

Trader Joe’s = edgy punk

Wholefoods = Katy Perry’s Extraterrestrial

Safeway = pop music with creepy subliminal advertising mixed in

Savemart = no music at all

Have you ever listened to the music on the sound system?

Page 8: Creativity course assignment2

Or looked up at the ceilings…

Page 9: Creativity course assignment2

Wholefoods has core

values? Way up there out of sight…who

knew???

Page 10: Creativity course assignment2

What about the floors?

Page 11: Creativity course assignment2

Filthy cracks and scuff marks at SaveMart and Safeway made the food seem less appealing.

Page 12: Creativity course assignment2

Would I want to shop here with my kids?

Safeway only has pink carts that don’t really touch the ground, and are dirty

Staff of life has gender-neutral colors and carts that feel like carts

Page 13: Creativity course assignment2

But who can resist Trader Joe’s coloring contests and stickers???

Page 14: Creativity course assignment2

Trader Joe’s also distinguishes itself by carrying fewer brands...except when it comes to wine and

bread

Page 15: Creativity course assignment2

Every imaginable kind of bread

Page 16: Creativity course assignment2
Page 17: Creativity course assignment2
Page 18: Creativity course assignment2

Ughhh, I give up. Too

many choices to

choose from.

Page 19: Creativity course assignment2

But then there is Trader Joe’s wine

Page 20: Creativity course assignment2

Who doesn’t love the folksy

descriptions? And there’s

something for every one’s price

range.

Page 21: Creativity course assignment2

Safeway is trying to upgrade it’s wine section with a “cellar”

Page 22: Creativity course assignment2

But the endless rows of wine are simply unappealing

Page 23: Creativity course assignment2

Staff of Life doesn’t even try

Page 24: Creativity course assignment2

Staff of Life distinguishes itself with its bulk food bins

And specialty cheeses

Page 25: Creativity course assignment2

Cheeses are supposed to be Wholefoods’ forte, but this color

scheme and location at the back of the store make it less appealing

Page 26: Creativity course assignment2

What about displays?

19 cents seems much more appealing than “free”

Page 27: Creativity course assignment2

How do these stores advertise?

New Leaf has informational articles and recipes in its monthly magazine of specials

Page 28: Creativity course assignment2

Trader Joe’s doesn’t need to offer sales. It tells stories…

Page 29: Creativity course assignment2

…to get me into the store, and tempts me with chocolate when I

leave

The clear winner in my book?
