• OCI secret agent mission

Welcome 007 OCI agents...

You are being sent on a special mission for the Red Carpet Reading experience.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, will involve you working

with other secret agents in your group. You will need to

mentally transport yourself back in time to the 1930’s. Your

mission will be to learn about this time period and create a time

capsule to teach others.

If you choose not to accept this mission you will be

reassimilated into the general population. If you choose to

accept begin your journey.

Task

A time capsule is a container that is used

to put important items in from a specific

time period to be discovered by later

generations. A time capsule for the United

States during 2010 might include MP3

player, pictures of the president and other

famous people. The items would all be put

in a container and sealed for later people

to learn from. Your task is to create a time

capsule of the 1930's for next years fifth

grade students to open and learn from. As

the historian, your job is to find or create

these objects and include them in the time

capsule.

As you travel back in

time you will collect

information about

the 1930's time

period and the main

character to put in a

time capsule. You

will collect

information that

tells about the

people and the hard

times they endured.

Meet the Author

Christopher Paul Curtis was born and reared in Flint, Michigan. After high school graduation, he worked on the assembly line of the Fisher Body Plant/Flint Plant No. 1 and graduated from the Flint branch of the University of Michigan. His first book, THE WATSONS GO TO BIRMINGHAM - 1963, received a Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King citation in 1996. Bud, Not Buddy received the Newbery Medal and the Coretta Scott King Award in 2000.

Introduction

While playing in an old attic you found an old suitcase. Inside you found an old faded flyer, a rock, photograph, an old tattered blanket, and a small knife. Curiosity getting the better of you has led you to wonder who owned this stuff and why did they save it? These items seem to be a time capsule. So you are going on a journey to discover the significance of these items. You are traveling all the way back to the 1930’s on a journey to learn more and collect more items.

Dear Diary...

*When you were transported back to the 1930’s you became

Bud Caldwell. As Bud you will keep a diary of your trials,

tribulations, feelings, sayings, and any insights that reveal your

true character. A diary is a place where you explore your

feelings and emotions and where you keep your secrets and

thoughts.

*Look for and discuss ideas on family, survival, hope, and

racisms.

*Include one entry per chapter for each group.

Summarize the information into a short news report that Bud might have heard on the radio. Tape record your report and share with the class.
