We wrote up a questionnaire for classmates our age and older people such as young adults and adults, we wanted to get a feel for what type of genre of film, most people were interested in. we decided the best to do this was via questionnaire, which we handed out to people to fill in their own (convenient time, as we wanted to get the most truthful and reliable answers and did not want to rush them.

We felt it was important to give a variety of different answers/genres people could pick, we also allowed them to pick one or more choices, as we understood from experience that many people like different types of genres.

We asked the different type of plots people liked the most and why, we did this to aid us in deciding what type of plot we wanted to choose for our short film.

We asked their favourite film, so we could see what the different aspects of the film they enjoyed most, so we could use it to our advantage in our film, in order to make our audience engaged in our film.

We also asked our audience what their favourite actors were, we wanted to get a feel of if the actors in the film, may have affected their answers.

Are you male or female? MaleFemale

We asked 11 people questions regarding their favourite features of film such as the genre, where they watched films the most, plot lines, narrative, favourite films and the actors. We wanted a variety of different answers to so we could compare them and find the similarities between both genders, while we were not aiming to direct a movie towards a specific gender, we thought it would be useful to see the type of movies each gender was interested in, we also wanted to see if the results would match the stereotype of one gender liking certain types of films, for example many believe that boys will be into action genre films, while on the other hand females liking romantic movies.

From the questionnaire we can see six were male and five were female, this shows the majority of the people asked were male.

We asked the age of the people who filled out our questionnaire, so we could get a feel of the range of what our targeted audience should be. This data shows us the majority of our audience is 17-19, this information will be useful when decided what type of content will be appropriate to show this age line as well as identifying the ranges of age, so we could come up with a target audience, depending on age that was most common with those taking our questionnaire.

What is your favourite genre?

We asked the participants what their favourite genre was, we wanted to see what the audience preferred genre was, we also wanted to use the information given back to give us an idea of what genre we should choose for our initial film ideas.

The most popular genre was Thriller, therefore, we wanted our film to be a thriller genre, we decided to look into the aspects of thriller genre in order to get a better idea of thriller genres. People also liked Horror, Comedy and Action, with those three being the 2nd most favourite choices, we decided to take this into mind and were thinking about introducing a horror theme to our film, however we ultimately decided that Thriller is what we wanted to do.

Which plot line do you prefer?

Obvious Unravels

We asked the participants what type of plot line they preferred and why, the answers were useful when deciding what type of plot we wanted to do, depending on the results we would try and introduce the plot line that was most favourable.

The answers we got back told us that those who took the questionnaire preferred the plot of the movie to slowly unravel as they found it interesting, engaging and makes the story complex. They also said that when the plot line unravelled it had a element of intellectual curiosity and the element of surprise.

This information was very useful and helped us decide that since our targeted audience preferred unravelling plot lines, its what we should focus on for our own movie plot. On the other hand those who picked the obvious plot line said that it was straight to the point and simple.

We also asked why they preferred obvious or Unraveling plot lines, in order to get a better idea of why they liked these specific plot lines. The questionnaire showed us that unraveling plot lines were preferred, mainly because people thought they were interesting, engaging and gives suspense and spark the curiosity, we decided after getting the results back that we would definitely use a plot line that unravels in order to get the same element of surprise in our film.

Those who preferred the obvious plot line said that they liked it because it was easy to follow and gets to the point, we decided to take this information into mind, however we were set on using an unraveling plot line.

What type of narrative do you prefer?

One of the questions we asked was what type of narrative do you prefer? We wanted to see the type of story our audience was most into, For example if they liked normal and simple narrative, plot-twists, questions to be answered on their journey or flashbacks. We asked this question so we would be able to compare each answer and hopefully get an idea of what type of story-line we wanted for our own short film. This information was useful as we were able to see that most people preferred plot-twists in movies, this helped us form our own narrative, and we decided to add a plot-twist into our film.

We also took in mind that people did like flashbacks and questions to be answered, however they were not as popular as plot-twists, so we decided to focus more on the plot twists.

Narrative in film refers to the events of the story, and can be written or spoken.

It also refers to the plot line of a story.
