Calling All Members:
We still are in need of a member(s) to take
over the leadership for the Garden Fair.
We have well-oiled groups of volunteers
that are willing to do their part, but we are missing the member(s) to oversee the
overall picture.
Our chairpersons from last year, Sharon Lane-Crouch and Rosalene Feller, did an
outstanding job and have agreed to mentor the new chairperson(s) this year. So be
assured, you will have all the support you need to coordinate a successful Garden Fair.
Will the new chairperson(s) be YOU? Please call or email me with any questions.

Fall arrived on September 22. Being transplanted from Chicago that
always meant you felt a chill in the air and your plants were starting to dwindle. As you all know, nothing is dwindling here and you don’t
feel that chill in the air.
Our kick-off meeting last month was well received by everyone. Ku-dos to Margaret Kirkpatrick in arranging for our guest speaker, Jim
Duby. Jim spoke on Preserving Seminole County. His program was very informative, and most liked observing the snake he brought to
our meeting.
This month’s speaker is Keri Byrum, Assistant Director at Leu Gardens speaking about Flowers for Fall and Winter. You won’t want to miss her presentation. Hope to see
you there.
Our club is hosting the District VII meeting of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs State Officers at Wekiva Youth Camp on Tuesday, October 18. We are in need of vol-
unteers to bring baked items for breakfast, hostesses to greet members from other garden clubs, help in the kitchen and setting up on Monday, October 17. If you plan
on attending, please send in your registration form to Cyndi Nelson today. Please con-tact Joan Lasek to volunteer and for more information.
We are looking forward to participating in the Great Weekend of Festivals sponsored
by the Rotary Club of Seminole County South on November 19 and 20 at Cranes Roost at Uptown Altamonte Springs. Sharon Lane-Crouch is heading up this endeavor for
us. We will be selling Christmas plants as a fundraiser for our club. Please show your support and participate in this event.
Let’s dig in and have fun in our gardens this October.

Crown of thorns (Euphorbia milii)
This may be of interest to those members wanting color in their garden with a plant needing very little care and attention. Several years ago I began taking picture of
flowering plants, shrubs, and colorful foliage in my small garden each month of the year. The Crown of thorns has been by far the most colorful, long-lasting plant that I
have. It has never developed a disease, receives very little care, and rewards me with clusters of flowers all year long. the flowers are in clusters of red, pink, yellow, and
white. The Crown of thorns is an evergreen succulent plant or small shrub.
Storing water in its thick stems, makes it
very drought tolerant. The thorny spikes on the stem give it its name, and the milky
toxic sap stored in the stem may cause skin problems. A sun-loving plant, tolerant
of neglect, it does well in any kind of soil as
long as it is well drained. It can be grown as a house plant, and outdoors in Zones 9b
through 11. It likes sun but tolerate some shade as well. According to an old Thai
saying, “The number of flowers on your Crown of thorns foretells your luck in life.”

The September Junior Gardener program was presented by Dianne Mealo and her student Christine from the University of Florida on terrari-
ums. Dianne talked about each step to make a terrarium. Each student started with a container with a top. Rocks covered the bottom of the
container, followed by a carbon sprinkle to unite the soil. Soil is food for the three plants placed in the container. A plastic animal is placed be-
tween the plants to make an interesting exhibit. The students are re-sponsible for watering and taking care of the project. They will be displayed in our
March Garden Fair.
We worked with twenty third-grade Junior Gardeners the first meeting of the school year. For the rest of the school year, we will be entertaining twelve second graders.
We will have programs on birds ,bees, insects, shells and other topics. We invite Garden Club members to join us.
September Volunteers: Pam Frisbey, Louise Gould, Lynn Griffis and Vanita Bulsara.
We meet the second Tuesday each month at 9:30—10:30 am at Starchild Academy.
