JULY EDITION 2015
DARK Act Update
Following a robust debate in which sev-
eral lawmakers spoke out against the
bill, on July 23rd the U.S. House of Representatives
passed H.R. 1599, The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling
Act. If passed by the full Congress, this proposed law
would block mandatory GMO labeling at both the state
and national levels.
Dubbed the DARK Act for Denying Americans the Right
to Know, the law would make voluntary GMO labeling
the official law of the land. However, in the twenty years
since GMOs first came on the market no food manufac-
turer has ever chosen to voluntarily label their product
as containing or produced using GMOs.
At Basics we believe consumers have the right to know what we are eating and where it came from. We sup-
port mandatory GMO labeling at the federal level.
The DARK Act now heads to the Senate for considera-
tion and could be voted into law as soon as this fall. So
far, no U.S. Senator is sponsoring the bill. If you support
mandatory GMO labeling now is a critical time to con-
tact your Senator and make your voice heard!
Rep. Paul Ryan, representing Wisconsin’s 1st Congres-
sional District including Janesville, voted in favor of the
DARK Act. See page 2 for information on contacting
your senators and other ways to show you support
mandatory GMO labeling.
